If I replace the mechanism with an aftermarket unit will the key fobs still program to it?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just received my 996 tt and I am getting used to and fixing some issues. When I lock the drivers door and unlock it either by fob or manually it takes two attempts at the handle to open the door, the window retraction mechanism (cabriolet) seems to be working properly. Any ideas? the passenger door obviously has less use and works fine. Thanks in advance.
It is amazing how often this is coming up now. Guess we are discovering what time and wear does to a twenty year old car. You best address this soon since the door latch mechanism is the only way to get in the car. Don't put this off. Your door latch mechanism needs to be replaced.

I dont think its the same issue but feel free to clarify. The window goes down like it should but the door handle requires 2 attempts if the door was locked and after unlocking. If the door is unlocked it works with no issues.
There are several microswitches for the door handle and door latch. Some are internal to the door latch. When you pull the handle and the window drops, that's the handle microswitch. But the reason you have to pull twice is because the internal lock/unlock and microswitch is beginning to stick inside the door latch mechanism. Wait too late and you will be cursing and pulling on the door handle repeatedly trying to get into your car. I speak from experience...unlock, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull...relock, unlock, pull,,,pull...pull...pull........
Read that thread I posted. It has detailed instructions and other good information about the door latch mechanism. This is a problem that will only get worse.
Hate to bump an older thread but I'm having the same issue occasionally. I've seen the threads with the rebuild of the lock actuator. The use of a VW mechanism as a cost saving etc. If I replace the mechanism with an aftermarket unit will the key fobs still program to it? The key fobs don't work currently but I want to avoid buying a new OEM key, attempting to have it programmed at the dealer only to find the new mechanism is not programmable.
Anyone have any insight?
The door latch does not read the RFID pill in the key. The door latch key cylinder works mechanically with your laser cut key. Recommendation - do not go cheap on the door latch. Get a real honest to goodness Porsche door latch. It is the only way to get in and out of the door and it is extremely important to get this done right. Also, if you can find a local locksmith that cuts laser cut keys, you can have as many of those as you want. Won't start the car but will open the door. Otherwise, keysinthepost can cut keys from a picture of your key(s).
Yes, if it is still working. My 21 year old key fob gave up the ghost a long time ago. Minute cracks in the circuit board or the push button on the circuit board goes bad. I'm not interested in spending upwards of $500 and programming at a Porsche dealer just so I can walk up to the car and unlock. I've been doing it manually for a very long time.
