Be sure you give the car a very thorough used car inspection, and arrange to be a passenger in the car on a longish (~15 miles) drive and then repeat the route as a driver.

Karen, if you're correct and this was a rental, then I'd RUN from it.

The route should give the test driver and then you a chance to exercise the car in a variety of driving conditions: city stop and go, low to moderate speed and high speed cruising.

We have snow today, but I am going to take Eric's advice as soon as the weather warms and go north and do some test driving

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Drove by the dealership this afternoon and spotted this one.
Please let me know what you think.
Carfax Report found at

1999 996 Polar Silver
Polar Silver hardtop - black soft top with glass window (99?)
Full leather interior with heated seats - in black
no accidents - no rust - no pumpkins - no RMS - no IMS
47,900 miles and asking 29,863
Is 30,000 too much for a 1999 cab?
Do not like the black on polar silver - would prefer they match
Have not seen inside of it yet - just drove by it
Would love to hear your thoughts about it - TIA
I believed they've had that one for a while now...i think it's still priced too high
They had it parked outside? I don't think i've seen any of their parked cars outside
As we near Spring, the price of Cabs goes up, unrealistically. Watch yourself, especially if your not completely crazy about the color........not worth overpaying due to time of year, especially if it isn't absolutely "perfect", in your mind.
I haven't done any price resarch so I can't say but the price does 'sound' high, optimistic at least.
I tried to view the pics of the car and was unsuccessful.

The route should give the test driver and then you a chance to exercise the car in a variety of driving conditions: city stop and go, low to moderate speed and high speed cruising. You want the chance to experience the going up through the gears to whatever terminal velocity you can stand and that is safe and legal.
Subject the car to a hard brake or two, too.
If the car passes your test ride, drive, inspection, and you think you can buy the car for an agreeable sum of money, then arrange to have the car PPI'd by a shop that knows these cars inside and out and can also pull the DME overrev counts and interpret them for you.
Remember a couple of things: Price is not a fact, only an opinon. And there's always another car.
Happy shopping!
Sincerely,
Macster.
What color is it and is it a cab - HAS to be a cab! Is it the one in your avatar? Would love to meet up with you - I feel like I am in WAAAAY over my head with all of this, even though the salesman seemed surprised at the questions I was asking
I'm not sure if I was reading the car fax report correctly (I'm so new to all of this) but it seems like the car was a rental (think Hertz) and then it sat for several years - that worries me if it is accurate - don't know how you all feel about that.
earlier I didnt look at it... WHAT?
OK that is not a good looking car for $30k - halogens, side skirts and no front or tail, what wheels are those, look a little BLING for me, seats are worn/weathered, there is missing paint on the hood release, Cassette holder is nice
, motor dirty, old expansion tank.
I say no - as before
Karen, if you're correct and this was a rental, then I'd RUN from it. Not walk - run.
I don't know anyone on the planet that doesn't drive the crap out of rental cars. Heck, I'd drive the crap out of a rented Ford Fiesta. I look at it this way: even if I don't drive the crap out of it, every other renter will. Especially a sub-exotic like a Porsche; who wouldn't want to rent one for a day just to drive the bejesus out of it?
A lot of rental cars include the maintenance history, but that's no guarantee that the maintenance was done competently, or by a knowledgeable mechanic. For all you know it'll be the same mechanics who spend most of their days spinning oil filters onto Ford Tauruses and the like. Not that there's anything wrong with people who spin filters on Tauruses, but they may not be the people you want working on your Porsche.
As one other poster said, there's always another car out there. If you're really smitten with the 996, there's nothing wrong with taking a look around to find a really cherry car. It took me almost two years to find my '99, and I'm glad I waited.
Cheers,
-- Mike
Many Porsche buyer/owners will have their company buy it for them. One of my friends has his owned by his (1 person) pottery business along with his Jeep. This might be the same.
The carfax also indicates the car is valued -$810 from book Not ~$3K over book. Are you looking for an automatic? The higher profile tires specked' for the 17" wheels will give a softer ride. If you decide to pursue this one have them take the hardtop off and show you the glass rear window among many other things like PPI .
Interesting that they have two 99s with identical wheels.
I guess it is unfortunate for me that I get to drive by all of these P-cars on a daily basis
because it just makes me want one more and this was the first time that I had seen this blue (I KNOW - POLAR SILVER) one. It looks like an 'icy baby blue' and I am looking for something in blue, which is why I noticed it and I had not seen it on their lot before. I would prefer a manual, actually and I thought the '99's came with a plastic window and not glass (do NOT want plastic).
Shark Attack - could you please post some pictures - I would love to see them - thanks a million
I was going to call this morning and offer 21K cash on the table, but after reading mpd425, mikehelms and ed's advice, I decided to pass.
Thanks so much everyone for your advice and suggestions.
Keep searching and post the cars you find here so we can all help and assist you in the search.
Forget this one, there are plenty more... I agree with you though, find a nice blue one!
Karen:
If you really want a cab, then all I can say is go for it! It's your dream. But, having said that, I'm sure that with a bit of help in here, someone will hunt down a car in the color that will make you happy, in the condition that it needs to be in, with all the proper maintenance and work done. The assistance in here will find the car, help you get a good PPI and guide you through the process, regardless of where you are located. I read about guys in here buying cars in California (GT3's) and having them shipped, sight unseen.......while that might be a leap of faith for you or anyone, IF you are patient, the right situation will come along....you just have to wait and keep looking. Heck, Larry45something offered a slight stimulus for assistance in finding a turbo........not that you need to do this, but, the fingers where flying over the keyboards as "finds" were coming in from all over the country. Ultimately, he found what he was looking for close to home. Put the word out......they will come.........GLWH (good luck with hunt).

It is owned by a Porsche enthusiast who knows how to take care of his Porsches. Compare his cab's condition ,options and price. Just trying to help you find the right Porsche.
What I can say is that the last 4 Porsche's I have sold (GT3, Boxster, RS America, Cayenne) I have priced properly and sold within a week or two at asking price. Maintenance is NEVER overlooked on any of my cars and done at crazy OCD intervals.
Karen:
Dell's may not be your first color choice or an exact match, BUT, it is very safe to say the car is extremely well sorted and totally taken care of. The owner is well know for taking very good care of his vehicles. Might be worth a serious look........
I have sent Dell a PM. The short version of the story is that I am in the process of buying a house and since I will need to borrow a bit for Dell's FABULOUS cab I will need to wait until I close on the house to purchase it. To have a car that I can TRUST is PRICELESS for me, especially since you all know that they 'blew me off' when I went into Toy Barn. I guess I'll have to color my hair black so that I can be taken seriously
I truly thank each of you for keeping an eye out for me and pointing me in the right direction.
+ another for Dell
If there is any appeal to the colors you wont find a better owner to buy from...might find some equal, but not better
(OK Dell... you can send the PayPal now
)
