We simply didn't have the mounting holes added the first time the bumper had to be replaced so now we have no holes.

I used the holes and my shop was nice enough to put their faceplate on.

The only constant is cops hate to have to inspect your car to verify you have "properly affixed" the front plate.

The fine here isn't worth me running without one and when I'm driving I can't see it anyway.

I wonder if that's coincidence or if there's some reason they use laser on the 805.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I live in VA and my local cops are sticklers for front license plates. I hate the factory mount but was living with it until this past weekend, when it popped out while I was washing the car.
Solution:
About $5 worth of industrial strength Velcro and some careful bending...

It sits virtually flush; it covers the holes; and best of all (for me) it covers the impression of a bolt and the plate holder from someone backing into me. I had it up to, well, moderately supra-legal speeds today and it didn't budge.
Dave
You already have holes drilled in your bumper, so why not just use them?
Bummer that your LEOs have a hangup about the plates. CA requires them as well, but I've had excellent luck (*knock knock*) with them not asking me to deface the 911 and the Corvette with license plates.
I hate the front license plate mount. Personal preference, I think it looks awful. I might end up getting a reflective decal of the plate made, but this is at least an interim solution.
That can't be good for your paint. Why not a tow hook mount, like something from US Millworks? That's what I did as Massachusetts requires a front plate as well.
You're lucky 5CHN3LL, after 15 years, I just got one in San Gabriel
. Not only did they get me for the license plate, they included the tinted windows
A radar gun would not have done me any good
Is anyone familiar with a front license plate holder that does not require drilling holes?????
Hope I didn't jinx myself.
On the topic of SoCal law - I had to enable LASER on my radar detector... on Saturday I saw a CHP standing on the center divider shooting folks with the laser gun. Bummer - until now, San Diego CHP and PD have been lazy and stuck to the KA.
OP, if you like it, that's what matters. I've looked at those tow hook mounts, but that's definitely not a low-budget solution.
In 23 yrs in CA I've had 4 tickets, 4 different cars, 4 different penaltys. The only constant is cops hate to have to inspect your car to verify you have "properly affixed" the front plate.
I live in VA and I don't remember the last time I had a front license plate (maybe my 97 golf? until I knocked it off running over traffic cones (I was young, stupid, and hanging out with a friend that would ultimately think locking himself in a trunk was a good idea...)). Last night was the first time I got pulled over for it (every now and then a cop will tack it on) in VA. The sheriff was cool about it (I didn't BS him and admitted I knew it was required) though and let me off with a warning.
Now driving into DC without a front plate, that is a riskier gamble... Park police are dicks about it. A missing plate somehow necessitated 3 cruisers with 2 officers each, one of which stood next to my wife's window with his tazer drawn the whole time. Still haven't figured out what he thought the tazer was going to do through the glass...
I used the holes and my shop was nice enough to put their faceplate on. The fine here isn't worth me running without one and when I'm driving I can't see it anyway.
No front plates in NC, just higher gas tax.
I am surprised the CA law makers haven't realized you can do away with the cost of the front plate but charge the same reg fee.
i never use a front license plate HOWEVER you can order a license plate size "sticker" of your license plate if you don't want to screw it on - seen it on a few cars - looks dumb as hell but better than velcro
I like your solution to this a lot, also in VA, and trying to decide what I'm going to do for front plates. It's something that bothers me, so I might just leave it off until it takes me into court. Honestly not sure.
At least the roads are nice!
There is a guy around the corner from me with a 986.1 that had a sticker version of his plate. That seems to get him more grief than a lack of one.
In VA it's a no points equipment ticket, so no need to go to court unless you really want to talk to a judge. So it really just a question of how many such tickets are you willing to stomach before you give in to VA's desire to ruin the lines of your car
Same goes for a radar detector. Up here in NoVA only the states really care and it's also a basic equipment violation.
Thanks for the insight on that. I'll be avoiding the sticker version of the plate, I'm pretty sure. Probably end up seeing how often the lack of a front plate is an issue.
Hahahahahaha...... WTH were they gonna do with a Taser near your wife. Was it the car, did they think you were gonna drive off in your high powered sports car? lol Goofy cops!
Good solution Dave. I have lived in Georgia and now Florida. We dont have a front plate as you probably know. What's funny is when I go back home to DC, I see cops peeking to look at my rear tag to see if I'm someone from DMV without a front plate, lol. Last time I backed into a spot at a tourist attraction, showing my wife around DC. Walking back to my car I see a cop walk around to the back of my car and look. Gotta get those speed trap front and back plate shots, lol. Safe travels
In NJ front License Plates are also required. Here is my low budget solution.
Pair of Seal Grey Bumper Plugs and roll the dice.
I would rather pay the fine then deface my front bumper. 6 Years - Not one ticket so far. Knock on Wood!
Same is true on my Range Rover
I'm one of those pay to play guys on here. Been rolling the dice for 20 years now with no front plate and tints. So far I've racked up 4 tickets over the 20 years at $75 each so it comes out to $2.50/mo to have it the way I want. Corvette guys are the luckiest though as they can usually get away with the front plate rule(at least around here).
That was actually the BMW e90 and with the windows up and door closed, I have no idea what he was thinking...
Cops in DC are something else as the city is under the jurisdiction of a ridiculous number of agencies and each one is randomly more strict/forgiving than the others on any issue.
Yeap. Either you are fine with the occasional ticket and fine or you're not. If you are not or you get unlucky and rack tickets up for it, then there is a simple solution.
For me a few times per year across the 3 cars (I think we've had maybe 10 between us over 20 years) is livable. If I started seeing them more regularly I'd do something (probably tow hook) on the daily drivers.
You don't notice the holes from 10 feet away, you notice the plate and mount.
We simply didn't have the mounting holes added the first time the bumper had to be replaced so now we have no holes. In the BMW we specifically asked them not to drill the holes and same in the Cayenne (and I didn't have them added when I put the CTT bumper on).
Rolling the dice for a lil over a year. I only got cited once for my front plate (by a female LEO) , although I've been told by 3 other Leo's to put the front plate on (w/o ticket).
I just went to a CHP office to get it written off (I literally stuck it on w/ double sided tape right in their parking lot , before I just moved it 20ft to the inspection parking area.
Office gave me some **** about it not being "properly attached" , he even tugged on it and told me he knew I was going to remove it as soon as I drove down. Either way it held when he pulled and I'm good at talking my way outta **** so he signed it off- about a block down I pulled over and removed it. Speaking of which I still need to go to court to show my sign off...
My front plate popped off during my first autoX event several years ago (collision with cone). I looked at the car (986 at the time) and thought... Hey, that looks a lot better! I haven't had a plate on front since. I have recently gotten two warnings and consider myself pretty lucky (knock knock).
Unfortunately my bumper had the holes already when I purchased it. Note to self: make sure next bumper is hole free. My OCD may be kicking in, anyone selling a hole free seal grey 4S bumper?
Just spend a little money and get this hideaway plate, it is only $119.
