Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
In NC I have never had anyone do a visual of my exhaust but the station does plug into the OBD to check emissions.

Just a head's up: The factory guidelines regarding the P0420/P0430 error codes is to if there are any additional codes, pending codes, pointing to O2 sensor aging to replace the indicator sensors and clear the codes and road test the car.
Replace noisy and getting noisier and malfunctioning (dtc p0430) converter

I went this route when it came time to replace a noisy and getting noisier and malfunctioning (DTC P0430) converter on my Boxster.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A fellow Rennlist member is offering a great deal on used 997 cats. Does anyone know if I can fit them on a 2001 996??? My cat is throwing a code P0420 and I want to replace it... the 997 part number is 99711303605.
Thanks in advance
My wife was driving around town yesterday and had this same code pop up. I told here to drive it like boogey man was chasing her. Should clear it up. Basically not driving hard enough to get CAT to light and start doing it's thing.
The only issue is tube size which I think 997 is a bit bigger for some reason ( displacement)????
Can't help you regarding the question of whether the 997 cats will fit the 996. While the manifold bolt pattern is the same -- probably -- I wonder about exhaust port size/shape and the manifold's length and how well it would match up to the rest of the exhaust system.
I'm assuming the cat is part of the exhaust manifold as it is with my Boxster.
Have you looked into buying one or two cats from a Porsche salvage business? I went this route when it came time to replace a noisy and getting noisier and malfunctioning (DTC P0430) converter on my Boxster.
I found two suitable units that when given the shake test were free of any rattles and had these installed. The noisy converter was gone and the P0430 error code along with it.
Just a head's up: The factory guidelines regarding the P0420/P0430 error codes is to if there are any additional codes, pending codes, pointing to O2 sensor aging to replace the indicator sensors and clear the codes and road test the car. IF the converter errors return to replace the indicated converters.
But in some cases -- I do not know the percentage -- a bad sensor (or two) can be the cause of an underperforming converter (or two).
Not sure where you're located but if your state doesn't have the emissions Gestapo, this would be a good opportunity to chop off the stock cats and replace them with
200-cell units
. Find yourself a local muffler shop, have them do the dirty work and you have better performance than stock for about $300, labor included.
That may be the best way to go if the state allows for it. But, I'd keep the factory cats just in case a state is being picky and they need to be put back on.
It's on my list of things to do, or cut the cats out and only put in a bypass pipe.
Thank you everyone for chiming in. I guess now i will have to measure pipe diameter to determine if they will work. If anyone else knows of a great deal on used 996 cats, please let me know.
no.
The cats "light up and start doing their thing" almost immediately at start up as the SAI runs. If cats didn't work properly under light driving, the EPA would go bananas.
In other words, driving it hard or soft is not the issue.
