Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Ultimately I used a small metal hook tool to grab the tabs and pull downwards, which allowed me to pull the centre vents out.

Suggestion
Does anyone have the parts number for the upper cubby that replaces the cd holder in the console with PCM originally installed?

There are other wires running through this area so its easy to see where to pass the microphone cable.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I received my PCCM+ on Monday from a dealership in Canada and installed it last night. There wasn't much in the way of instructions, so I decided to type up what I did step-by-step. It took me about 3 hours, even with the added time figuring a few things out. I've only played with it a little bit so far but it seems awesome. Very cool to see the navigation instructions pop up in the LCD screen in the gauge cluster.
My car is MY2004, USA market, PCM2/Bose/MOST.
Remove the plastic surround containing switches, wiper speed control dial and cigarette lighter. This pops off pretty easily. I simply grabbed the plastic frame and pulled outwards, then used a blunt instrument (popsicle stick) to gently pry it out around the edges. All of the electrical plugs come out easily. The switches are simply friction fit while the other two (wiper speed and cigarette lighter) have little tabs that need to be depressed.
Remove center vents. There are two small tabs inside the tops of the vents, accessible through the slats. People talk about pushing these with a screwdriver, which I found ineffective. Ultimately I used a small metal hook tool to grab the tabs and pull downwards, which allowed me to pull the centre vents out.
Unscrew the 4 Torx (T20) screws holding the plastic support bracket containing the 2-DIN PCM2 unit and the cupholders
Slide out the construct containing the plastic support bracket, 2-DIN PCM2, and cupholders. Remove all the electrical connections at the back of the PCM2 unit.
Remove the cupholders from the plastic support bracket - there are two spring loaded metal tabs that need to be pushed down to slide the cupholders out backwards.
There are 4 plastic circular locking tabs around the PCM2 that can be rotated with a 5mm Allen key to depress the metal retaining tabs holding the unit into the plastic support bracket. You can either fiddle with these to depress the tabs, or simply depress them with a flathead screwdriver to get the PCM2 unit out of the plastic support bracket.
I took this opportunity to thread the cable for the microphone through the dash opening for the steering column, then through a small opening in the metal support bracket deep in the dash which is designed to hold the cupholders up. There are other wires running through this area so its easy to see where to pass the microphone cable. Then I bundled up and zip-tied the excess cable to store it neatly around the wiring for the PSM switch and wiper speed control dial. The microphone can then be mounted with double sided tape to the top of the steering column.
Next screw together the metal support bracket for the PCCM+. There is only one way it can go together. There are two silver side pieces and one black transverse member. Do not screw it to the PCCM+ yet.
Slide the PCCM+ unit into the plastic support frame, then slide the 3-piece metal support construct onto the back of the PCCM+ unit. Make sure to push the metal support frame as far forwards as possible to push the PCCM+ unit forward against the plastic support bracket. There are sliding adjustments for each of the 6 screws so you can assembly it snugly. I found that it would still wiggle transversely within the plastic frame a few millimeters. Not to worry - this will be held snug when the plastic switch surround is eventually snapped on at the end.
Use double sided tape to attach the MOST control unit to the black metal transverse support bracket, with the two female connectors facing the back. Hook up the MOST control unit to the PCCM+ using the provided cable.
Slide the cupholders back into the construct. The spring loaded metal tabs will hold it in place.
The construct is ready to be installed. Its nice to have a helper to support the construct while the cables are connected.
Working from one side to the other, attach all the connectors. Each connector is keyed so it can only go in one way. Its really quite foolproof. Theres a blue single pin connector for the GPS antenna, black single pin for the radio antenna. There was a yellow single pin connector that I did not end up using. Note that the MOST control unit has a grey plastic cap on the fibre optic female connector that must be removed before you can attach the fibre optic cable.
I did not bother installing the accessory block for USB since I dont plan to use Apply CarPlay. I like the nice clean look without it.
Turn the car on to see if the system is working.
Slide the thing in, screw in place with the 4 Torx screws, reinsert center vents (they just snap back in), then reattach all the switch connectors and snap the plastic frame back on.
Enjoy!
I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, but I think the sound quality is better than the original PCM2.
This car had navigation from the factory, so I was able to reuse the existing GPS antenna. Otherwise I'm not sure where it would need to be mounted - potentially on the black metal transverse tray above the PCCM+, unless the cupholders would somehow block the signal. No cutting of the plastic frame was required.
Unfortunately the package did not include a diagram indicating what all the connections on the back are for, or any sort of installation instructions. It just comes with a big sign saying "Schedule installation with your Porsche dealership." I haven't seen any specifications indicating that it will accommodate a back-up camera.
The default color for button illumination is white, and I was very pleased to see there is an option to change it to amber to match the rest of the 996 interior
Great info. I am very keen to put it in myself . However the European edition is for some reason delayed / on hold , I picked up a couple of goodies from Porsche yesterday and they confirmed upon this. I think it totally transforms the 996 interior and my only upset is that it cant be connected to the existing CD changer (some still use CDs...) . A quick question if I may what is the max GB capacity it car read off the SD card ?
A picture with amber illumination and a couple of the menus would be great for those who want to see what it is like
Do you have a picture of how the bracket should be assembled and then fitted to the unit? I know you said "it Can only go one way" but I having a real struggle piecing it together. Additionally, you're saying that the assembled bracket goes on the BACK of the unit? How can that be? That's where all the connections are...
I am really disappointed Porsche provided zero instructions in the box.
Appreciate the video, but the bracket for the PCCM+ unit is very different. I have come to the conclusion that the black roof piece that came in my box is defective. It is just not wide enough to allow the side arms to be secured to the sides of the PCCM+ unit. I will try to update with a picture.
the black tray is on top and attaches to the two side brackets. If you have a single din, you need a new nav radio mount, metal retaining bar, and a new bezel for the hvac relocation.

I get confused looking at online sources.
On edit: Sorry for not searching enough. The info is out there, I've got it now.
dantonio, did you code anything to use the nav display on the cluster?
Your factory unit was PCM 1 or PCM 2?
Do you have volume increase when accelerating, like it was with PCM?
