^^^ Good paint jobs owe a huge part of their ultimate success to to proper prep and a super clean painting environment.

Rick's top in the video came from CA and he had to replace the upholstery due to mice, not moisture.

I�m planning to drive my �01 Lapis C4 Cab in the winter months and have been keeping an eye out on hardtops for sale. One came up locally. It�s silver, appears to be in good condition and the ask is $900.
Estimates for professional paint were $1000 - $3000, so I�m assuming I�m in for $1250-1500 if the seals are good and there aren�t surprises. So all in (Top + Paint) would be $2150 - $2400. And a new one on Suncoast is $2750 + $400 for shipping...and I get a perfect, brand new top.
Another option is having a friend�s dad (Porsche guy, knows his stuff) paint the top and I do prep work. I�ve never done prep for a paint job though - what all is involved in that process and is it DIY-friendly? All in cost there would be $900 for the top + just cost of paint and any prep materials, so all in around $1000-ish.

The other option is to drive a two-tone car in the winter, Blue with a silver top doesn't sound too bad to me. As a cab owner with a hardtop, I think they look a bit odd even when they're the correct color. But they do make a difference as far as noise and comfort. Give it a shot this winter. If you hate it, get it painted next year.
You can paint it yourself. Picked up the hardtop locally, and drove it home. The interior was grey and maroon, now I�ve painted it beige and Biarritz white, respectively.
Working on the exterior now. Primer is on.

Hey are you guys doing anything special to clean the inside. The guy I got mine from stored it outside for 15years. It's pretty rough with a couple dark/moldy patches
I want to clean the inside but I'm concerned about tearing the fabric.
If the top was placed outside, there�s a chance all the internal lining and padding needs to be replaced, and take it to an upholstery shop?
I live in the Texas gulf coast, so humidity and rain are not friendly to any absorbent materials left outside. Watch this video, This guy lives in Arizona, not exactly the wettest of places...

can you show pics of the underside? Also, how did you handle the rubber strips on the top, as well as the edge of the windshield gasket?
I scored a top in rough exterior shape for only $300 and I also need Lapis Blue so I'm going to paint it or have it done, depends on cost.
Here in the tri state area (east coast)plenty of hard tops of various colors available (Facebook market place) you might want to consider buying correct color hardtop, then selling yours.A little bit of risk and time but you would have factory paint.( make sure top has not been repainted).
