The buyer did ask for an address where he can mail a cashiers check for the car.

Not wanting to be surprised at what I commited to buy, I always flew in to inspect the vehicle, test drive and make sure I was comfortable with everything before handing over the cash.

Even IF they threaten you with some sort of ebay doom and gloom - you can cancel your user account and start up a new one in a heartbeat as THEY do using internet cafes in God knows where.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just helped a buddy sell his car on ebay and it was our first time. The car had been for sale for about 3 days before it was finally purchased using the buy it now option. Weird thing is twice there was an attempt at an offer to buy the car, first was just a $100 off the listing and then another offer for $200 off the listing buy it now price so both offers were declined. Both bidders were both signed in as ebay users on the day the bids were placed. Yesterday he got an email saying that the car sold using the buy it now option. I told him it was weird as the buyer never called and asked about the car or sent any emails. He tried contacting the buyer through email and had some dialogue but nothing with a contact number he had been asking for so they can talk about the transaction. The buyer did ask for an address where he can mail a cashiers check for the car. I told him its probably fraudulent bid. Now the buyer says a check was mailed which will include the shipping cost of the car and some type of transport method. This all smells fishy to me but as I said I have never sold a car on ebay. Is that unusual is it just me. BTW the buyer was just an ebay history of just joining earlier this month with no feedback. Thanks.
I've bought a few cars and motorcycles off of Ebay. Not wanting to be surprised at what I commited to buy, I always flew in to inspect the vehicle, test drive and make sure I was comfortable with everything before handing over the cash. I always did a PPI beforehand, except once when buying a new Lexus from a dealer as a used car with 260 miles on the clock. It still had a 4 year warranty. I also made sure the seller understood, if I was not happy, I'd walk without reprocussions. Also I'd fax him a copy of the cashiers check with a contact person at the Bank/CU so he could verify its authenticity beforehand. These were actually the most pleasent buying experiences I'd ever had, quick, simple, painless.
If anything seems at all questionable, it most likely is. Internet buyers and sellers are generally very transparent.
Don't let the title or the car out of your sight until that check clears the bank.
Make sure the branch manager of the bank assures you 100% (on her childrens graves) that it is cleared.
Scam. It's a shame that these guys are allowed to hit the buy it now button forcing you to re-list the car. Hopefully ebay will figure out a way around this.
I've sold some gear on eBay. At one time the buyers were screened and life was good. Now, its become a haven for losers from 3rd world countries. You have to change settings not to accept anyone without a history of X (say 10) transactions with a 100% rating. I'd also specify US only for the bids, or Canada, if you're there. That filters 99.99% of the scum that frequent the site. I'd also specify a deposit via paypal within 24 hrs.
eBay has become a total scam. I'm frankly surprised that they are allowed to still conduct business. From the sales side, they are known as supporting fencing goods. From the purchasing side, many attempt to submit "cashiers' checks" which are found to be fraudulent.
to the OP, thats a scam. period. i wouldn't even waste time cashing that check. i would relist with the above advice. after getting a few deadbeat bidders, thats what i do, and i haven't had a dead beat bidder in several years.
i have been buying / selling on ebay for almost 15 years, and I have had very very few problems, and none which resulted in a loss of money.
Buying or selling a car on eBay is just like buying or selling a car via any other method. Three of the four cars in my sig (including the Porsche) were purchased on eBay and they've all been very good cars.
Likewise for me. Since I put the filters on items I had for sale, I haven't had any problems whatsoever. The thing was, it took me some grief, time and effort to find out that ebay is aware of the scams and this is what has to be done. I had buyers from eastern somalia (probably the same miscreants who are now pirates of the open sea) wanting to buy stuff - new buyers, 0.0 history.
I bought my car on ebay and had no issue at all...however we all know there are scammers out there so my message to anyone interested is to be as vigilant as humanly possible.
You didn't mention if the buyer was from North America or otherwise... There is a filter to limit the places bidders can be from unless you specifically allow them. Having bought 6 cars and sold 3 I always require a PayPal account and deposit of 1000.00 as soon as the Buy It Now is used.... Helps some of these issues...
Craigslist has this type of same scam. Basically same process. They say they cannot see car but will send a shipping company an will pay for the asking price...
Its pretty simple ... if you cannot contact buyer its a scam no matter what
Be aware that even with cashiers checks - your bank weeks later can come back to you saying the check was bad even after releasing the funds from the check in the first place to you - they WILL debt your account for these funds way after the fact and there is nothing you can do about it and you'll have no car as it will be in a container to Dubui. This is a 100% scam. Do NOT close this deal and allow no one near your car. Even IF they threaten you with some sort of ebay doom and gloom - you can cancel your user account and start up a new one in a heartbeat as THEY do using internet cafes in God knows where. Trust what the majority Rennlisters are saying here... I hope we're not too late...
Wow, this is freaking crazy! So today in the mail comes a certified check for $2000 over the selling price which is suppose to cover the cost of shipping the car. Funny how there is no return address and just mailed regularly through mail-no signature required, nothing. The envelope is stamped with it being sent out from England and the check was drawn on Wachovia Bank from the midwest. Wachovia doesn't even exist anymore as they are now Wells Fargo. Damn these scam artist.
You should report this to the cops. I am sure they are investigating these types of scams
Autotrader has other scammers as well. Even from the seller side.
