Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'happening' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'happening' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check those' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

After Y cable and connections, its likely the starter at this stage.

Is replacing the Y CABLE a simple thing, any links on that project?

Unsuccessful attempt
Replaced my alternator and now it starts pretty well. Still not a "strong" or quick starter turnover but it doesn't seem like a low battery charge as before

Unsuccessful attempt
I replaced the battery under warranty, but it was likely fine. Then I used temporary extra cables, including an additional ground, and it improved slightly but clearly didn't fix it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm having intermittent issues with weak and/or no start on my manual coup. I purchased a few months back and it has always had a weak start crank, but would turn over and fire up. After a few weeks of this, I got my first no crank and no start. I was able to jump from the rear and it would fire up with no weak turn-over. I figured it must be the battery so I replaced the battery. And that seemed to be the fix, or so I thought. A couple of weeks later the same issue happened, so I took it to a mechanic that works on Porsches and he diagnosed that the alternator was bad based on voltages. I thought, great finally this will be solved once and for all. He was able to get the alternator rebuilt versus the ridiculous price of a new one. And I thought I'd be good to go. A week later and the same issue is happening. I got a brand new key and fob from Porsche when I purchased the vehicle so I don't think it is a bad key chip thing. I have also noticed that sometimes if I take the key out and repeat the process it will start. It is intermittent sometimes will eventually work when I return and other times nothing, no attempt to turn over even though all the dash lights look good. thank you for any help in advance, I'm also a newb to Porsches.
Does this happen when it's hot? Check the connections at the starter - the Y cable is a common problem. Before I got the car it got a brand new alternator and battery, but I the problem arose pretty soon after. I replaced the battery under warranty, but it was likely fine. Then I used temporary extra cables, including an additional ground, and it improved slightly but clearly didn't fix it.
Then I researched more (there is a ton of info on the no-crank hot-start issue, including a lot of stories of unnecessary battery and alternator replacement.
I replaced the starter and it was like magic
. Others have rebuilt the starter for even cheaper.
If it doesn't crank when hot, check those. Of course, crank position sensor is always a possibility.....
Yes.
You bought an old car, get ready for more parts that need replacing. If you're relying on someone else to do your work it's going to cost you a fortune...YouTube has many DIY videos on just about everything.
Interested to see where this goes. I just got my new to me 99 a few weeks ago. Wouldn't start easily or at all after periods of driving it - but the battery tender had no problem charging the battery back up

I'm not confident enough to help you diagnose, but depending what you find, here are some references.
There are threads on the hot start issue, including testing voltage drops to determine the Y cable is the problem.
It's #21 at the link below. Can be found for about $75. Labor to have someone else do it might be brutal. Depending how DIY you are, there are threads here with easier (than the official book methods) ways to replace.

If you need an alternator, the upgraded 997 version fits. ($275) I'm replacing mine now. Might be on Amazon for less, but I worry about counterfit parts there.

There was also a recent thread on starter replacement/rebuild options for less than new OEM.

And it references an older thread on custom Y cable options.
Good luck!
