If you can't get it to seat by hand, I certainly wouldn't try to get it seated by tightening the bolts.

If I recall correctly, I made sure the hole in the engine was perfectly clean (finger and shop towels), then I took some engine oil and lubed the hole and the AOS pipe.

Thanks - just found this image - it's from 986 and as there are different versions of that AOS where there's only one o-ring instead of that 4- pack but it kind of make sense that the last should be the tightening gasket between engine and AOS.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any tips how to get that bottom pipe go in properly. I think it is supposed to go in so that those rubber threads are inside the engine. Even if I tighten the bolts completely it won't go in any further. Naturally it's supposed to be tight so how to get enough force so that it goes completely in?

POST 2Original post

If I recall correctly, I made sure the hole in the engine was perfectly clean (finger and shop towels), then I took some engine oil and lubed the hole and the AOS pipe. Went right in no problems. Because of the position I was in, under the car and up in the wheel well, most of it was done by feel. I did remove the back wheels, back bumper and heat shields, lowered the engine to the cross-member, all of which gave me a better shot at it. It was one bitch of a job, and I never want to do it again.

POST 3Original post

Agree with DB, oil the o rings. It shouldn't require "force" to go in. It's snug but my guess is you are binding somewhere. I found on mine that making sure the wires and tubing around the top of the AOS would prevent the AOS from dropping straight in the hole. Make sure the are pushed up out of the way. If you can't get it to seat by hand, I certainly wouldn't try to get it seated by tightening the bolts.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Added a bit of oil so it was almost out but not completely (hence a bit of messy externally also) and then pushed it back in - getting so close but..

Ok, thx for the tip - I'll check if there's something blocking that from the top.

POST 6Original post

I could see the orange seal on my old aos and the new one i installed. I just tightened the bolts.
