I want a covering that would chew up the curb the next time I hit one and have the city repair the curb while my bumper stays perfect.

The bumper came out beautiful after the repair plus it now has the bumper holes filled.
Replace clear bra, you'll be looking at a respray too

So, it's not just a case of replacing the clear bra, you'll be looking at a respray too.

I'm wondering if heat and/or goo remover could be used carefully to loosen the adhesive without pulling too hard on the factory paint underneath.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I used it once on a hot rod and it worked good on a trip but overall is a PITA.
As I stated a couple of days ago I scraped my front bumper on a curb and they say they can fix it but will require a total repaint of front bumper if I want it perfect. There are also a few rock chips in it so they will also be gone. I am considering one of the new clear bra high tech coverings that are now available to keep it looking new. I want a covering that would chew up the curb the next time I hit one and have the city repair the curb while my bumper stays perfect. Has anybody got any experience with the new coverings, good or bad. I know they used to yellow after a while but I think that is no longer an issue. I could also have the bumper plug holes filled in at the same time the other repair is being done but maybe thats not a good idea.
Similar to you, I had my front bumper (and hood and fenders) repainted. I opted to get the license plate holes filed and went with Xpel film on the bumper and partial hood. It does not yellow and self repairs minor scuffs (apply warm air or sunlight). It is pricier than 3M and similar but worth it in my opinion.
I had Nano Fusion on a 981 Cayman S. It will protect paint against minor stone chips (though it will pit the film ... which doesn't look great and can't touch up). Also, it probably won't save you from a serious curb rash, though it might keep it from being quite so bad. Your call.
I have Xpel on my front. Bumper, fenders, lights, and partial hood. I cant tell if its yellowed due to the color of my car LOL (see avatar). But a clear bra is not going to save your bumper from curb rash, just really good at keeping rock chips off.
I see you live in Glendale Ca. I have heard XPEL is the best but no installers in VEGAS yet. I'm in LA often, would you mind telling me where you got yours done and how much it cost, I want the same areas you did.
Sticker city did mine. Theyre in sherman oaks.

As for the price IIRC it was around $650. A little pricey but you get 10 years of warranty on parts and labor.
Thanks for the info. Most of my driving is on freeways and the high speed and debris cause rock chips to appear almost every time I drive anything to LA. The price seems worth it for me.
FYI - With a repainted bumper and a clear bra, if the bra is ever damaged by a curb or something and has to be removed it will most likely take a bit of paint with it. So, it's not just a case of replacing the clear bra, you'll be looking at a respray too.
^ What he said. I had to remove the paint film on my passenger-side skirt because it had some cone rash - and it pulled off a silver-dollar size patch of paint. The two hours I spent with adhesive remover was the icing on that poop cake.
I realize if you have to remove the clear stuff no matter what brand it is you will probably have to paint whatever its stuck on. The hope is with the clear stuff you won't have rock chips ever damage the paint and maybe if you're careful you wont ever have to remove the clear stuff. If you drive on freeways long distances you will get rock chips due to the speed if its not covered no matter how careful you are.
Damn, I had such high hopes for this thread.
My '00 986 has clear stuff on the frunk lid and it looks like it has had its day.
I'm glad that I read here that it could remove paint when you peel it. I'm wondering if heat and/or goo remover could be used carefully to loosen the adhesive without pulling too hard on the factory paint underneath.
Even with a professional installer removing mine with a commercial steamer, it still lifted one spot about the size of a silver dollar and another about the size of a dime.
They make some temporary clear stuff that you put on a car and then when you get to your destination you peel it off. It does not remove paint and it has wrinkles etc and is mainly for transporting exotic or high dollar cars. I used it once on a hot rod and it worked good on a trip but overall is a PITA. I'm supposed to get my car back tomorrow with the bumper repaired. Expel can not be applied for at least 30 days so the paint can cure. The installer tells me that paint will lift during the installation while they try to fit it if the paint is not fully cured. I hope not to get any rock chips in it while I'm waiting to get the Expel covering done. If I do I'll just drive the car and have the bumper painted every few years.
Nope, they warned me beforehand though. The bra was scuffed and ratty enough looking I had them pull a section of it. I had scraped the right front corner on a curb backing out of a parking spot that I ironically parked in to keep my car safe!
When I use to take my show car to long meets and shows a cheap temporary solution to prevent rock chips was to apply blue painters tape...say what you want but it work.
I found a pic online for a reference.
The temporary clear stuff comes in rolls different widths. You have to cut it where the air needs to get to the radiators. It was pretty cheap but I can't even remember what it was called or where I got it any more.
FWIW - I removed the clear bra on my 996 front bumper on factory paint - no issues at all. I would guess it would pull paint off a respray but not factory paint.
I know a little about aftermarket paint jobs and there are plenty of ways to cut corners. Even when corners aren't cut - you simply can't get the results (from a robustness perspective) that the factory can (even though it may look as good).
I'd like to keep it looking good for a few years or maybe more, than if it needs a new clear bra and another paint job so be it. I decided to go with the EXPEL stuff. I'll wait the 30 days for the newly painted bumper to cure and then have it done. I don't think I'd feel right if I didn't spend some money on this car after 30 days goes by!
Paint lifting is supposed to be MUCH LESS likely (almost zero%) to happen on factory paint according to the professional installer I had working on it.
I will post a before an after pic when I have it done. The bumper came out beautiful after the repair plus it now has the bumper holes filled. I was going to drive it to Los Angeles again and have the EXPEL applied in the Valley since I stay in Reseda when I go there but I found someone here in Las Vegas to do it.
