Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The gentleman sold it to me and I pick it up tomorrow! I ended up getting him down to $17,500!! IMS and RMS are going in next week. The shop here wants $2900 to put in retrokit and RMS. Is that about right?

POST 2Original post

Does that price ($2,900) include a new clutch? If not, its too much. Congrats on the car!

POST 3Original post

Congrats on the car. Pics?! As for the work, that sounds OK on price, BUT . . . Is the RMS leaking now? If not, no real need to replace. That car has a dual row bearing with a very low failure rate. You might just want to wait until the clutch needs to be replaced or maybe the AOS, then do the IMS bearing in conjunction with other work. The car passed a PPI. If that included an inspection of the oil filter and drain plug, I would wait on the retrofit. If not, then have the oil changed and check for metal.

POST 4Original post

Congrats and oh no another IMS thread I'm with KC - hopefully the PPI included the oil filter inspection (cut it open and look for metal). Assuming it looks good I would do a regimen of regular oil changes at low mileage intervals (3-5k) with an oil filter inspection each time. Of course, that's my opinion and there are many others here. Concerning the price, I was recently quoted $1k for parts and 8 hours labor to do the AOS, IMS and RMS. Since labor where I am is $150/hour, it came to $2200. If you do end up doing the IMS, you might as well do the RMS since it is an inexpensive part and will not affect the overall cost much. While they're in there, they could look at the AOS and see if it needs replacing.

POST 5Original post

Pics or it didnt happen.. J/K.. Congrats.. I am waiting on IMS etc until the clutch bites it in my early 99..

POST 6Original post

Good price, I paid 16,750 for my 01 Cab. Shop around before you pull the trigger on the work needing to be done.

POST 7Original post

Congrats from another recent 99 buyer! That is a fantastic deal IMO and you are going to love that car!!

POST 8Original post

Congrats on the 99 I think you got a great deal on a clean low mileage car. 3 years ago I had the IMS done and parts were $555 and labor was $976 (total$1531). I am sure prices have gone up since then but I believe many shops are at asking closer to $2000-$2300 for the job. If it makes you feel good and enjoy the car then do it. If not wait until you need a clutch then do it.

POST 9Original post

Congrats on the new car. I love the 99's, not traction control, cable throttle, pure driver's car.

POST 10Original post

Congratulations Jetpusher and welcome I look forward to seeing it.

POST 11Original post

I agree that if that $2900 doesn't include a clutch it is an astronomical price. And what a good deal!

POST 12Original post

great deal, congratulations sounds like a really good car yes, $2900 seems a bit stiff

POST 13Original post

Jetpusher: Just a gentle hint -you are asking a good question in the wrong sequence. And Timing/sequence is everything for the M96. I suggest the first issue is to find a few Porsche Indies via this Forum who are competent. As the experts(not me) will tell you , it is very easy for a "I've done that job a thousand times-could do it with my eyes shut" to screw up. If you read the LN Installation Instructions for IMS carefully, they are very long ,full of excruciating detail and lots of imperatives. For a reason! It is tempting to skip/hurry -dump the job on a trainee and merely supervise him. It may be amusing(please no sarcasm) to define the perfect psycographic profile of am M96 tech. I'll start by offering: obsessive, compulsive, over-cautious, studious,anxiety-riddled,conscientious, zealously honest ,etc. Does this fit any of your candidates ? The mechanic who replaced the IMS+RMS and a few other items for the P.O. of my car missed only one small thing. The engine failed 10 days after I bought it.Very little warning. Just a suggestion.

any shop can do IMS/AOS/RMS/clutch for $2900

POST 15Original post

Congrats on your decision. it's a done deal I guess. Get the car, take off the oil pan, remove the filter and examine it all carefully. If you have metal, too bad for you. I don't have one but this would be my process when I buy one: If you don't have metal in there AND if your clutch and main seal are ok, then proceed with the IMS Guardian and go drive. Wait until you have a leaky seal, or need a clutch or the AOS goes. At that time, do them all at once. Clutch, AOS, RMS, IMS bearing kit. Well bought, enjoy it.
