Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used to be fairly mechanical with my old Rx-7 (changed the oil, changed the plugs, fiddled with the Holley carburater, changed the rear end oil and stuff like that, but I've never messed with brakes at all).
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'stupid question and i am just starting' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect wire' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

pretty easy job, impact tool might be required if there is lot of rust, you dont have to bleed the new brakes but might be a good thing to do, maybe change the brake fluid while your there...

The small screws should be changed if they have been in there a long time as Porsche consider them single use - although many people don't change them - it's the second time you have to get these philps head screws out that is the problem I find.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is probably a stupid question and I am just starting to research it, but here it goes...
My front brakes are shot. Can I buy the discs and pads and replace them myself in the garage myself or are there special tools involved? Also, does this job require bleeding the brakes or is it simply plug and chug with the parts?

pretty easy job, impact tool might be required if there is lot of rust, you dont have to bleed the new brakes but might be a good thing to do, maybe change the brake fluid while your there...
1- remove the caliper- 2 bolts
2- remove the rotor, sometime they have small bolts into the disc, you have to remove them before,
on other cars i had to use an impact driver screwdriver... dont know on 996 disc...
to remove rotor, you might need a rubber hammer and give some shots from the behind, in the front with a regular hammer so the rotor starts to move
4- to remove the pads, there is a little clip that need to get off.. but i havnt done it, so im not sure
also, sometime you have to push the piston to have room for the new pads, you need a big tool( dont know the name in english...)
i think thats about it, other people could explain more and better than i did hehe
good luck
Changing pads and rotors is about as easy a DIY as you could possibly ask for on a car. You would not have to bleed them, but unless it's been done recently, I would highly recommend that you do so. Buy a Motive bleeder and a catch bottle, and put some good brake fluid in there at the same time you do the pads and rotors.
About the only place where you can run into difficulty is getting the rotors off. If they have been on a long time, the little screws that hold the rotors on to the hub sometimes can be difficult to get off. Some PBBlaster or penetrating oil will help with that.
Probably my first DIY and couldn't have done it without the help of the guys here and on Renntech.org. Don't be afraid to tackle it. There are many guys here that can help if you get stuck anywhere along the way.
You also have to unclip the warning sensors. Inspect the wire for cracks - replace if they look suspect. I say this because if one of these wires is cracked - your brake light could come on some time down the road and you'll have to get dirty all over again.
The small screws should be changed if they have been in there a long time as Porsche consider them single use - although many people don't change them - it's the second time you have to get these philps head screws out that is the problem I find. They cost a buck each from a dealer. Be careful pushing back the pads - its easy to screw the piston seals up here. I use a pad retractor but you can use a screw driver if your
gentle
and apply even pressure. Remember to open up the master cyl cap and suck out a bit of fluid so your not trying to compress fluid in the system when pushing back on the pads.
As others have stated here - it might be a good time to bleed the brakes or refresh the fluid as well. Power bleeders are better the sliced bread!! And cheap as well. They even come with the little plastic bottle and tube for bleeding the fluid into thats marked off in cc's.
Yeah, this is simple stuff. I just did on my Audi and SUPER easy stuff. Make sure you read instructions after you install new pads. You have to brake them in 1st!
