As background, it is a 2003 C4S with 105,000 miles, had all the recommended maintenance (including IMS/RMS/t-stat/deep sump/magnetic plug/spin-on filter) done at 65K.
Leading evidence: 'last year' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'last year' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend maintenance (including ims/rms/t-stat/deep sump/magnetic plug/spin-on filter) done at 65k' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I bought them all used, except for the Bolt which is a lease.

My car was running perfect and chose to do an elective rebuild.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So my car has been with FSI since June and I have now been reunited with it. As background, it is a 2003 C4S with 105,000 miles, had all the recommended maintenance (including IMS/RMS/t-stat/deep sump/magnetic plug/spin-on filter) done at 65K.
My car was running perfect and chose to do an elective rebuild. Since I track it about 4 weekends a year, I elected for the 3.8 track prepared rebuild option.
I have put less than 200 miles on the car but good god, it pulls like a freight train!
The reason for my post is to say if you love your car, plan to keep it and are on the fence of having it rebuilt by FSI, I recommend you go fo it!
Oh and the sound, and I havent even gone through a tunnel yet!
Came back to me in style!
You made the right decision by going with Flat 6 Innovations. Jake Raby runs a top notch shop, second to none. Many people just "rebuild" these engines, but not Flat 6 Innovations. That's what I admire about this man and his team. They've looked closely at the M9X engines and found ways to correct the failings of the factory design. If it wasn't for Raby, most of these cars would probably be ready for the landfill, IMHO.
That's a very nice looking car, SY is a great color!
Yeah, these Stage II's are beasts! Mine has the Fister exhaust mod and it sounds as strong as it is. Many addl miles of fun ahead for you!
I have learned to live with a speed yellow car...It takes some getting used to. I get spotted all around town!
Looking forward to putting many miles on her.
Reading all of your comments make me want to upgrade. Its quite an expense but sounds like the final element to make these cars special. We did a type 4 following the general Raby build and its a beast.
enjoy it!
Top speed? The only comment I have for this is that if you get anywhere close to it and get caught, the police will take your car, and you'll probably spend some time in jail... Don't go there (unless you're on a track or the salt flats...)! The FSI built motors are NIGHT and DAY from the stock motor - and they'll last... I can't/won't quote you #'s but the performance difference is not subtle in the least.
What does that do w/asking for what a engine build costs? Is it a secret? Whatever, nevermind. I'll just call the shop and ask for a ball park figure for a similar job but don't see why someone can't just put a $ out there.
And, FYI, I drive a 996, BMW 335i, MR2 Spyder, MB ML350, Ford F250 Diesel and a Chevy Bolt. I bought them all used, except for the Bolt which is a lease. I like variety in what I drive but also don't like throwing $ away needlessly on cars, especially on depreciation. Don't need to have the fastest or coolest car. It just has to be cheap to purchase/own and practical and/or fun to drive. Each of these vehicles fills these requirements for me.
You made a good choice for sure. I have a 99 C2, 3.8 Stage II Jake did for me about a year and a half ago. It is fantastic, they do such a great job at FSI.
Thanks for all the kind words, guys. Sometimes the challenges we face with these cars as they age, and present new challenges can be overwhelming. Our days are like a roller coaster compared to the way they were only 3 years ago, so its nice to read content like this, and see some rewards.
FSI doesn't post dyno numbers, it is more about how the car responds with the better midrange torque and power. Turbo is a different beast with different issues, but 400+hp.
Enough to put you in a box and six feet under but still with the large smile frozen on your face!
Remember hp is just a number. Depends on where it is and how useable it is...then there is the issue of torque which is a whole other story.
Not for me. Got an early build '99 (Feb 98) that was built alongside the last of the 993s. First of the water-cooled, last of the 'analog' with cable throttle. Lighter than a turbo and with the Stage II, should hang with bigger dogs at track and DE days (especially after suspension upgrades).
Different strokes, right?
Not a choice I considered. I have a 2005 C4S 996 coupe. One of 728 built and sold as a 2005 as it was the last year for the 996. Not rare but a small population. Turbos have their attraction but it comes with other costly considerations. I do NOT track nor pylon race and don't plan to with this car. The F6I increase in HP and torque is nice and fun, but my main consideration was to get it reconstructed RIGHT and ONCE! This engine has finally given me confidence in the reliability of my car. I could not be happier!
The turbo will dominate the N/A 996 even in stock from. They are very easy to reprogram and add more boost. At that point point the N/A will stand zero chance to be anywhere near it. I've been in a 997TT with a tune that was pushing near 600hp on nothing but a tune and some aftermarket mufflers (for sound). Fastest car I've ever been. I would imagine a 996TT with a tune would not be that far behind the 997TT. If you want a cheap hight hp car and know how to turn a wrench then look no further than an '03-'05 Benz AMG CL55 or E55. They come with 500ft/lb of torque in stock from. They are stupid fast for what they are and you can get them between $10-$15K CDN around here.
