Suspected cause
I will venture as far to say that leaving out these pre- and post-rebuild steps was likely an intentional decision by Raby and his crew.

This may or may not be Jakes recommendation, I don't know so you can also check with him if you are taking the hands on class.

Its time to move on into the 9a1 with classes, and my step by step, 15 hour engine rebuild video can fill the role of the M9X class very well.

Just as it’s probably not a great idea to spend hundreds of dollars on a Porsche factory workshop manual if you’re not going to work on your car, I can’t recommend spending $629 on the

You can't replace doing this live in class setting, however, the video series (in combination with the hands on class) gives an awesome step by step procedure that will be immensely valuable to me to watch step by step along with the hand out and notes from the hands on class to put this back together.

I just purchase the Knowledge Gruppe's 20 part video series for engine assembly. I highly recommend it for anyone who will be rebuilding their engine. As context, I have taken their on-line class and the 4 day hands on course as well. The hands on course is invaluable as well and I would not skip that if you have the opportunity. You can't replace doing this live in class setting, however, the video series (in combination with the hands on class) gives an awesome step by step procedure that will be immensely valuable to me to watch step by step along with the hand out and notes from the hands on class to put this back together. I was pretty comfortable with just my memory, the hand out from the hands on class and my notes but the video brings everything together in a very concise manner. For me, it was well worth the money and I think will be a big time saver in re-assembly.
I know the next hands on class is open for registration and the last I heard they are 2 people away from the minimum to hold the class and each year I know Jake is contemplating (or maybe has already decided) not to offer the hands on in the future. If I were doing this over, I would purchase the video series and watch it through not worrying about capturing all of the details but it would give any one who hasn't done this before an awesome review of all of the engine components and make the hands on class even more valuable as you cover a lot of stuff in 4 days and there are quite a few people in the class all working on a couple of engines (it gets very busy).
This may or may not be Jakes recommendation, I don't know so you can also check with him if you are taking the hands on class. This is just my impression as an enthusiast who is mechanically inclined but has never rebuilt an engine, let alone a M96. But quite honestly my stress level has gone way down in preparation for assembly after watching the video series. Just my opinion.
thanks for the review. Ive tried to purchase it on Prime Video but it wont accept payment from my Canadian based VISA 😔 It appears the Visa needs to be from US Based bank.
hopefully Jake can get this set up for those of us North of the border....
I’m trying to decide if I want to buy it on Amazon Prime or on DVD.
I was worried it was going to cost a lot more.
I should be able to swing that much sometime after the first of the year.
Guys,
Thanks for the kind words, and review of the content. The video is designed for “Play- pause” so you can watch what I do, then pause the video, and perform those steps on your own engine, then hit play, and continue on.
In regard to the class, I honestly think the videos are abetter value. While you do learn a ton in the hands- on class, and there’s no substitute for direct experience with the engine, it also costs around 3K for most attendees pay for the class, and to pay for travel to our training facility for 4 days of instruction. If someone doesn’t take a lot of notes, they do leave the class with my workbook, but that’s all. The video is there forever as a reference, and costs pennies compared to the hands on class.
The last hands- on class will be held 1.15- 1.18.2020 and we just got the minimum amount of commitments to have this class last week. It has seats remaining to be fully booked, in case someone wants to come.
I have gotten tired of dealing with people waiting till the last minute to sign up for classes, so I am changing the focus from hands- on classes, to videos. The upstairs of the training facility is being transformed into 3 studios. 12 years of hands- on classes has been enough for me.
The Knowledge Gruppe has not officially released the video series yet. From what I understand it went live on Amazon before it was really supposed to. This is why you haven’t found it on the TKG site. I’m out of that loop, so I don’t really know.. My part is DONE!
As far as the Canadian sales goes, I’d expect thats some gripe with Amazon, and nothing can be done to remedy it, but I don’t know... The Canadians may have to wait till the DVDs are done.
I signed off on the DVD proofs last week, and I think they are shooting to have them released by the end of January, with some pre-sales going on at some point before that.
Though we are not selling the DVDs here at Flat 6, you’ll be able to buy them at:
-Theknowledgegruppe.com
-LN Engineering
-Pelican Parts
Of course, you can stream it at the Amazon link.
Yes, 1 season is all 20 videos, over 15 hours of content.
We put a ton into this, and I am glad to have it behind me. Now I am on to working on a mechanical video series with my 8 year old daughter, Ava who is currently building her first 914 engine :-)
Hey Jake, I took your class along with Tony Callas with my buddy Adam (Dr. Strangelove). We were the Vegas kids if you remember.
Took away a ton of confidence, that we immediately jumped on purchasing a roller mk1 996 shortly after the class. To Jakes mention of people waiting till the last moment to take the class, dont -- nothing like getting real-life instruction from experts that make it their lifes work to teach. Came in as an enthusiast (romantic way of saying I didnt know s#%+ about engines), but the class made me feel like a technician or at least an understanding of how they work. The facility is set up very cool, with dedicated classrooms and aspirational garage. Also, I gotta say, Jakes family over there are so hospitable as icing on the cake, salt to the earth.
That said, just subscribed to the series on Prime Video and got through the first two classes before I made myself go to bed. I didnt want to sleep man, its formatted like our class and took me back (that room where Jake does the video is where we ate lunch!). This series is the best compliment to the class, as it is pause and play. Unlike Dr. Stangelove, I cant remember all that I learned in class, quite frankly due to the pace and in large part my lack of mechanical proficiency. There are head-scratching moments when Im working on the engine that I wish I remembered but its a lot to preserve. The book from class is formatted as a presentation and if you dont take sufficient notes, you better keep in touch with your cohorts to bounce from.
Now I got my instructor on demand -- its brilliant. As I watched it, Im glad I attended the class first. For me, even the video, I thought, hmm, I would probably not jump into purchasing a car, disassemble, diagnose, and try to put it back together with it alone. Thats just me. Im thankful I got both under my belt now. Fired up.
Jake, I have a 12-year old girl that I also wish to rebuild with her, Im going to tell her about your daughter, pretty cool youre doing that #dadgoals
Lastly, ha! Our class photo was in your first video. Congratulations -- now Season 2 should be the Performance Class 😁
After a 30 minute call to Amazon customer service, they have put in a request to release the license for the video to be sold to Amazon Prime Canadian subscribers....who knows how long that could take.
They did recommend that The Knowledge Gruppe contact Amazon to try to expedite this and provide authorization.
Hopefully this happens. In the meantime, you likely need to be logged into a US based ip address to access the video series.
The Knowledge Gruppe team just informed me that for the video to be streamed in other countries, the primary language for each country must be included in the closed captioning of the video. At the present the videos can only be streamed in the US and UK due too this. Canada is not being offered as an option for English closed captioning, perhaps because of the large population of French speaking residents there?
I do not believe e the demand for the streamed video is great enough for TKG spend the money to have the closed captioning done for all the various languages, that would allow for worldwide streaming of the video.
Some of you guys will have to wait till the DVDs come out, more than likely.
@alegrianyc
Thank you for the kind words. Your 12 year old will soon have an experience that the two of you can do together. You'll see.
I'm just curious, why do you guys want dvd vs. streaming (except for those outside the US who can't buy the digital version)? Streaming seems so much more flexible of an option to me. I'm not even sure I can find my DVD player anymore.
It would appear that Canadians looking to purchase via Prime Video will need a US based Credit Card (US based billing address) and may also need to use VPN to access the Prime Video account to make it think that you are in the US. Unless another avenue for streaming is provided, looks like it's DVD-only for those outside of the US or UK
, for now at least.
Back in the spring we did a survey here, as well as in our newsletters about the video. In this survey the cost Vs video length/ detail was a big question, as well as the way to share the video.
It was a landslide in regard to DVD's being the most requested method of sharing. That surprised me, but we listened. 1,000 DVD box sets are being made this week.
I'm just the guy that shares the magic, all the Amazon/ sales and etc aren't my department..
Easy...where my warehouse is located I do not have good internet. But, I do have a big screen tv plus a DVD player.
Plus, When I buy something I want to physically own it. If something happened and ISP's started playing games with bandwidth and such I always have my DVD
When you say "DVD" you mean blue-ray right? After 15 years, looking at standard definition video makes my eyes hurt.
Also: I can do the French closed captions in 1 minute; just keep putting "Faire la chose a l'ecran." (do the thing on the screen) at the bottom of every scene.
The demand for blue- ray was nil in the survey. Only DVDs were made due to this, and since a DVD will play in a bleary player as well. No on e voted for Blue- ray, though I am sure that with requests they could be special ordered b y TKG.
@billh1963
I am like you.. Very 20th century in regard to tangible items. If I own it, I want to have it in my possession.
Hell yes dad. Love this. Considering how much we enjoy spending time in the garage with "The Wizard" I can't imagine how much little Ava values time with you. I'll keep telling people you're an ******* but you're not doing yourself any favors by posting stuff like this.
Merry Christmas Jake, thanks for the effort on these videos.
Yeah, it took me a long time to earn the ******* status, and I want to make sure that I retain that...
You'll have to wait and see what Ava and I have cooked up for everyone... It's my primary focus for 2020.
Ava set deck height, and calculated compression ratio on her engine yesterday. Now we are ready to fit the cylinder heads over the Christmas break.
Jake keeps thinking of ways to take my money....
IMS bearings, hands on classes and DVD series. He knows I have several 914’s so now he’s going after my 914 money
She's way too smart to run this place, plus I can only imagine the caliber of Porsche owner that she'd work with that far in the future. It's bad enough now!
It's my goal to teach her about how things work, and to teach her something new everyday. She doesn't sit around and play with devices, she has go karts, dirt bikes, tanks, and guns. She even knows how to properly load ammunition.
Ava can load a proper 458 Socom round, but she still takes time to play with her Barbies, too..
That is awesome. I'm a firm believer that all kids (boys and girls) should know how to handle and shoot firearms safely. Reloading knowledge is a bonus!
She's had her firearms safety rules memorized since the age of 3 when she got her first rifle. Today she is a crack shot, and getting better.
She even had a part in developing the Driven GP-1 engine oil, using it for some of her Jr. Dragster development work.
She is lucky to have a Dad such as you. You are lucky to have a daughter such as her. It is so nice that you have the opportunity to spend time with her. She needs her Dad!
Absolutely.. After she does her homework its off to the shop where we work on something new everyday.. Today we are working on our VW LT40 4x4 Overland Camper conversion. This used to be an Austrian firetruck that I imported last year, and it has gone though a crazy transformation. We camped in it last Thursday, after fitting the rooftop tent.. It was 26 degrees outside, and we had ice on the inside of the tent. She's tough as nails! You'd never guess that she was born with a birth defect, and had surgery at 2 days old. We are blessed, and thankful!
While I understand the convenience of streaming, but when it comes to purchasing an exclusive series, I want it on a disc format. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down to watch a video and can't remember my password to authenticate or my streaming connection is wonky. Discs are more reliable and now that we've already seen territorial limitations with Amazon, I think people will find purchasing the DVD box set will be less problematic.
I just talked to The Knowledge Gruppe:
The DVDs are shipped, and will arrive at the distribution facility tomorrow, January 7th. They will then ship a chunk of them to both LN, and Pelican, as well as Amazon and at the store on
www.theknowledgegruppe.com
.
With these being received, they have decided to have an official release date of 1.20.20 for orders to go live.
The videos will not be available directly from Flat 6. We have no employees to handle these types of sales. The only thing we have to sell you, is a complete engine. The official resellers are LN, Pelican, and Amazon, with the videos presented directly by The Knowledge Gruppe. All resellers will have the same retail prices, across the board.
Awesome!
Looking forward to 1/20.
My Internet was down the other day.
That made me glad that I'd decided to buy the DVDs.
No Internet and I can still watch the DVDs!
True, plus its actually a tangible item that you know won't be lost because of things out of your control.
I was astonished when The Knowledge Gruppe told me how many of these video series "full seasons" had been sold on Amazon Prime Video already. Even without being officially released, the number was 4X what I thought it would be. Its been 21 years since I sold a technical video (my old 914 engine rebuild video) so I had no idea what to expect.
The way to prove something is successful is through how well it sells... Other than that it doesnt matter to me how many are sold, I made the same amount no matter how many sell. I got my check in full before the first one ever sold😎
I plan more paid videos, we are working on the outline for PPI videos for 996/997 and other models at the present.
Pre-order for the DVD set is live on LN:
https://lnengineering.com/products/b...-assembly.html
I went the Amazon route since I no longer own a DVD player. Watched the first 12 episodes so far, and I'm very happy with the purchase.

So happy that you are pleased with the video content. We tried hard to keep good continuity, and remain engaged. I refused to use notes, or a script to shoot the scenes, its all organic, and done on the fly, from my brain housing group.
The Knowledge Gruppe has received 1,000 sets of the videos on DVD as of yesterday.
From what I understand, the major release will occur on 1.20.20, but both Pelican, and LN have set up pre- orders at a discounted price, that will extend till 1.20.20

TKG will begin order fulfillment after 1.20.20.
Please refrain from calling or emailing Flat 6 Innovations concerning these video purchases. We are not selling these videos, we are only set up to sell engines here. I made this post in an effort to curb the calls we have been getting all day, with guys wanting to buy these direct from us. We don't even have a DVD on our property, though I will have some on- hand next week to use during my final M9X Engine Assembly Hands- On Class
Got a notice from Pelican in my email inbox this morning. Went to their site and could not get their site to cooperate with my browser. Unknown whether it's my computer or their site. Visited LN via the link provided in this thread. Looking forward to the arrival of this, so I can study-up. It will be awhile before I can apply the lessons. Need to study-up on disassembly, right now....
Thanks Jake!
Cool..
Disassembly is not part of this season of videos. We figured that if we receive enough requests for disassembly that a video for this can be shot, and added into season 2. Disassembly is simple, so I wanted to spend our time on the assembly with the current video series. The video begins with all components cleaned, prepped, balanced, and ready for assembly. I do go over the prep, machining, and balancing as overviews, but the focus is on assembly order. That's where the goofs are made, and my silver bullets are needed.
A quick disassembly video would be nice. I have my notes from the class and 'sort of' remember it. I agree the important information is on the assembly. But, would be helpful to see the disassembly on video.
Unfortunately it costs the same to shoot a disassembly video Vs an assembly video, BUT my the feelings of those working with me on this project had a lot of skepticism of buyers willing to pay the same kind of money to see someone take a dirty engine apart. This is why requests for a teardown video will have to be received in large numbers to drive this to be added to season 2.
Season 2 will include in- depth Pre- Purchase videos for 996 and 997, Aircooled Porsche engine rebuild videos, and etc. I am not doing any more hands- on classes after next week's class for the remainder of 2020. The rest of my time is spent on videos.
Jake,
Three comments:
+1 for disassembly video, even if hyper speed video with normal speed voice over
The LN site shows price, and nice description of all 20 episodes. Pelican site shows no price, and only a popup jpg description of first 5 only. Don't know if you care about those details.
Can't wait to purchase. Torn between DVD (do I still own a player??) and Amazon streaming version.
Kelly
It's hard for me to work that way, because I prefer detail. me and speed used in the same sentence when it comes to engine work don't get along. My 8 year old daughter disassembled an M96 and I only needed to help her with pupping apart the case halves, and removing the carrier from the engine. It's that simple to disassemble. ALL the time should be spent creating your own resource materials, using pictures and videos as you go, as well as "bagging and tagging" every fastener. It's the same with anything. Once I taught Ava these disciplines, she has used them with her first Go kart engines, her Jr. Dragster engine, her first 914 engine build, and the M96
Nope, not my department! I'm done, they can figure out how to sell them :-)
I'd prefer the DVD series.. Plus it comes in a really cool case with a picture of an ******* on the cover :-)
She just finished this long block last week. The biggest challenge was rocker arm geometry, and keeping her on task for 4 hours of trial, and error effort.
Mr. Raby any guilt taking these guys' money to buy unneeded items? Your knowledge of building M96 engines would be ethical to charge ~ $100, not saying has to be done for free such as Mr. Hart giving no charge his very hard earned information about bore scoring etc.
How are these vehicles any more "unneeded" that a freakin Porsche? A Porsche can do one thing, these vehicles can do many things, matter of fact they are a lot more practical than a Porsche, especially when you need to crush a car, or ****** a neighbor's 20,000 pound tractor out of a ditch. Its also nice when you can use them to take kids for rides, and let them experience something more than a freaking video game.
Who's money?
Not a single damn dollar that was used to buy those vehicles came from the sale of anything associated with a Porsche or its engine. This isn't my only business, but is is the one that's the least profitable, and the biggest pain in the ***.
More questions?
No, I didn't rob any of your Porsche buddies to buy my half track either.. In fact I sold my 997 to a friend and rolled that money into it. Is that ok?
Last time I checked it IS a free country, and Mr Raby can do what ever he wants with his money. Everyone here owes him a lot for all the knowledge he has shared over all the years on this forum.
No problem. It's clear that assembly is where the care and precision needs to be focused. Disassembly is easy. Oh wait, you said that already...
Exactly.
You've got to love the guys popping-off on things they have no knowledge of.
Pelican lost their chance of a sale to me. They sent me an email notification touting the pre-order special. I went there and found the same thing you did. No way to navigate and no way to place an order. LN will be getting a lot of business from me anyway, the DVD purchase is just one more thing.
I doubt the machine guns are functional. Driving these things is legal in most states as long as they meet requirements for lighting, tracks have rubber pads, etc.
In Austin and other cities of certain political leanings it may cause extreme triggering
WTF do you think you are? Take your bark and find another tree!
And what's up with the helicopter, yours or borrowed? Do you charge for rides, how much $$? Maybe your toy?
Dont know this guy t when I read it I assumed he was being tongue in cheek funny... can't believe he was serious! Either bad taste in humor or a total jerk.. OR maybe both?
They are actually quite affordable when you price by the pound.
In all seriousness, some units aren't that expensive. Look on ebay ...believe it or not. There are also many websites that sell military equipment.
Who the heck are you to tell someone how to spend their money?
Who do you think you are telling someone what their business can charge?
This is a free country!
Jake can charge what he thinks the market can bare, and he can spend his own money on anything legal, period!
You sound like the idiots who tell me I shouldnt own an expensive Porsche.
Your opinion doesnt matter!
Please go away!
Hi, Scott and others,
We have received your complaints about Pelican Parts and I've spoken to Jake about the problem over the phone. Apparently, we've received quite a bit of demand for pre-orders of the M9X Engine Assembly DVD videos. At the moment, the only two companies that you can pre-order is either through Pelican Parts or LN Engineering. I haven't received any complaints about the LN ordering system and so I'll do my best to reach out to the sales and distribution team at Pelican. I do apologize for this problem and rest assured I'll forward your concerns about their cart/ordering system. Also, based on the design of the Pelican website, some people are thinking they can order individual stages and/or discs of the series. The only way you can purchase the individual stages within the 20-part series is through Amazon Prime Direct.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you!
All the best,
Bobby

Holy cow...Unneeded? Who is to judge what's needed? I was raised that food, shelter, and clothing were the only "needs" for a person and that everything else is a want. Amazing that someone with luxury items such as a Porsche and possibly a helicopter passes judgement on what someone's needs are. We all have wants. I recently purchased a very sweet 911 with one of Mr. Raby's engines because I wanted it badly. BTW, its a screamer with massive torque. Same with my nice house in Atlanta and private school for my girls, and my vacations around the world. I have lots of wants!! I bust my butt for my wants. You come off sounding like one of those wealthy politicians that thinks he knows what's best for the regular folk. The person I bought my car off of knows Mr. Raby a fair amount and he told me that Mr. Raby (may I call you Jake?) came from nothing up in the Georgia mountains to where he is today, after serving our country in the Marine Corps. Where he is today is holding status as a very successful, self-made businessman by being one of the world's best Porsche M9X engine builders. Why would he feel guilt achieving the American dream? I sure as hell don't. We should be thankful he takes the time to chime in to this forum. Jake, I hope you make as much money as you can and continue to keep this awesome economy going by spending some of the money we spend with you. Also, thank you for the free advice that you do often provide BTW.
Wow. Just wow.... You do realize we live in a free country? Its one Jake and I have both spent time defending. Jake can charge whatever he wants for his knowledge and services, and you can buy them or not: your choice. But to intrude on ones personal life and suggest they live it according to your demands is just plain offensive.
Pelican was bought out by ECS, which was acquired by a private equity firm. It is no longer the same business it once was. The story is well documented in other locations. A lot of parts businesses are being bought out by this same firm for their profits. In many cases they have removed knowledgable staff to maximize profits too. Select your vendors wisely too.

I tried "pre-ordering" with Pelican on Nov 8, by website and by calling, with no luck.
I then ordered online with LN Engineering, along with a some other goodies
. Thanks LN for processing the order and promptly answering the questions I had. Great service!
This is true and sometimes you can't please anybody. So do what you do and there will be those who understand and appreciate what you do. For those who do not...who cares...that is their problem not yours.
Am guessing Jake has a large variety of steel rods with different hole sizes in them as well to go with the military hardware. Wonder if any are of the 50 cal size? Uhh Jake, If you do, that is something you should actually feel guilty about because I really NEED one.
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to give you an update. Pelican Parts has corrected the problem on their site and everyone should be able to order the DVD series as normal.
You may need to refresh your browser if following the link below. (The ordering page should look like the attached image)
Please us know if you notice any of problem with pre-ordering.
All the best,
Bobby

That's just cool, Jake. She is a very sharp kid and was very fun to chat with when I took the Engine Class! I hope my nieces are as willing to learn stuff when they get a bit older!
She's at my side here at the shop right now.. Getting ready to build her "Blockzilla" alcohol burning engine... It makes 8X the factory power, but we think it has more in it..
I was astounded the 1st time I heard of Jake Raby in 2008 when he was posting all his new found knowledge about M96 engines & how to improve them.
When he offered the 1st engine rebuild class I signed up as soon as I heard fearing this crazy guy might change his mind !
Jake, Thank you for your U.S.M.C. service and Porsche service!
And tonight I'm prepping the training facility for next week's final M9X Engine Rebuild class. Over 1,000 attendees have passed through the class since you did, and some of the slides in the presentation are the same as what you saw.
Its time to move on into the 9a1 with classes, and my step by step, 15 hour engine rebuild video can fill the role of the M9X class very well.
It's a little bittersweet, but I am ready to take a break, and then roll out a 9A1 class in 2021.
I think this guy is being a little unfairly judged. Let me explain...
This is obvious a joke wrapped with a little sarcasm. It's called sardonic. Why? Because the writer does the same thing with his money. It was meant in jest.
Again, it's my opinion he was basing this comment on all the free videos that Jake Raby has produced on YouTube in the last couple of years. I don't think he really understood the price of the rebuilding videos that Jake is releasing on Pelican and LN at the time he posted that remark? Of course, a clarification could have helped.
The beauty of our country is that we still have the freedom to pick and chose how we spend our money. We're Porsche owners for goodness sakes! If we want to pay $5000 for colored deviated stitching, than more power to us! If we want to pay for supple leather over the butt hard leather, than more power to us! If we want to pay extra for colored gauges, then more power to us! If we want to pay extra for carbon fiber sill covers, the more power to us! If I can't figure out where to put my cell phones, than who the heck cares if I squeeze it in my wife's cleavage? haha (sorry, but that is still one of the funniest threads I've ever read! Does anyone know what it was called? I can't find it.)
Back on topic...
Seems to me, there is not anything like this rebuilding series on the market. If I want to learn how to rebuild these engines, I'm not going to local screw ups "that only work on Chevys", I'm going to the man - Jake Raby. Seems to me that $595 for 15 hours of instruction is a bargain. Just apply to tech school and you'll see what it cost per semester hour!
I think the sellers are going to the retail price of 629.95 for the video series (all episodes in season 1) starting on the 20th of the month, when the major release occurs.
That's an FYI.

What is it:
Five-DVD box set that illustrates full process to build an M9X engine
Where to buy:

Many of us work on our own cars to some extent, whether changing the oil, replacing brake pads, or performing other kinds of general maintenance. Some of us are even more proficient hobby mechanics and can perform extensive work in a home garage. But one task that has always seemed best left to professionals is building an engine. After watching
Focus On: M9X Engine Assembly
with some healthy skepticism, I came away with more knowledge of how the M97 engine in my own Porsche works as well as more confidence in my unproven ability to build its engine.
In the interest of transparency, I have limited mechanical ability. I’ve replaced engine mounts and brake pads and rotors in a Porsche 944 S2, as well as its radiator with some help, lowered my Volkswagen Golf with new springs and shocks, and performed oil changes. Any work that includes fluids or seems complicated makes me nervous, which explains my skepticism about how this five-DVD box set would apply to me. Would I be able to comprehend the assembly instructions given by Jake Raby of Flat 6 Innovations? Would I gain enough confidence from the knowledge contained in the box set to feel comfortable attempting to build a M96/M97 engine?
Anybody who’s a garage mechanic and has a smartphone has probably used YouTube videos to guide them on certain projects. I did just that when lowering my Golf and have begun to search for a decent video that will show me what a successful brake and clutch fluid flush looks like on my Cayman. One of the drawbacks of YouTube is you often don’t know how great of a mechanic the presenter is or if they are using correct or accepted techniques. Honest intent doesn’t always translate to good results, and there are probably just as many bad YouTube mechanic videos as there are good ones. In
M9X Engine Assembly
, the presenter is an expert with experience building hundreds of M96 and M97 engines, which apply to all Porsche 911s (excluding Turbo, GT3, and GT2), Boxsters, and Caymans from model years 1997-2008. I was comfortable taking the information I would learn at face value.
Fortunately I had a sense of what to expect from Raby, as PCA filmed a
video series
in which he explained the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing, its problems, and its fixes. In that series, he was adept at taking complicated systems and breaking them down into more easily understood bits of information. With this in mind, I fired up the DVD player and started the first episode of the box set, “Crankshaft Carrier Assembly Part 1,” hoping I wouldn’t be lost by the end.
When I completed the first episode, I couldn’t wait to start the next one, which would finish the assembly of the crankshaft carrier. I learned something I hadn’t known before and was convinced that, as I progressed through the series, I would have a much greater understanding about how all the individual parts work as a system.
It took me two full weekend days to watch everything — that’s 17 episodes of a complete engine rebuild of a M97 engine plus three supplemental episodes covering subjects specific to five-chain M96 engines. Raby went step by step in exhaustive detail, using his experience teaching engine building classes to explain and sometimes re-explain processes. Each stage, or episode, of the build completes a mini milestone of assembly and allows viewers to take in information at a digestible rate. The other benefit of this approach is proper tool management. Each stage often requires a unique combination of tools, which are neatly laid out and explained before that episode’s assembly begins. Compartmentalizing each stage of the build process helps with organization, keeping tools and parts out of the picture until they’re needed. Many of the tools used are common in the average home garage, and Raby makes an effort to show us processes that involve the least amount of specialty tools possible — except when it’s safer to use them. For example, I would definitely use a bore scope when installing bank 2 pistons and to make sure I’ve installed the wrist-pin circlips properly, and the special camshaft locking tool for use when setting timing.
By the end of the series, a completed M97 flat six was affixed to the engine stand, and I oddly felt a sense of accomplishment in spite of not having turned a single wrench. I’ll attribute that to the knowledge I gained from watching the build. Having been around Porsches for my whole life and produced content about them for a decade, I have had only a vague sense of how an M9X engine works, not a detailed view of how all its parts go together from the crankshaft to the cylinder heads. The common problem areas of this engine series — IMS bearing, rear main seal leaks, air-oil separator failures — all have greater meaning to me now as well.
If I were to be given a choice on whether to purchase a factory manual to rebuild a M9X engine or use this
M9X Engine Assembly
series, I’d choose the latter. A factory manual, like all books, may tell you the official ways to build an engine, but it can’t show you how to build one like these DVDs can. Furthermore, this series goes well beyond the average YouTube mechanic video: It is a complete guide to an engine rebuild and doesn’t leave out any single step, right down to what type of assembly lubricant or grease works best for the job at hand. One thing to note is that Raby’s build process deviates from the factory manual on a few occasions, but these deviations have been learned through experience, tested, and are meant to either make a particular step easier or, more importantly, offer more protection from mistakes, which can lead to catastrophic engine failure. At the least, for the fledgling mechanic who’s decided to build one of these engines, I would consider
Focus On: M9X Engine Assembly
a required tool. For the seasoned engine builder, it could be a refreshing source of information that may present new processes to employ.
For the casual viewer, however, there’s one thing that will factor into whether it’s a smart purchase: the price. Just as it’s probably not a great idea to spend hundreds of dollars on a Porsche factory workshop manual if you’re not going to work on your car, I can’t recommend spending $629 on the
M9X Engine Assembly
box set unless you plan to rebuild your engine yourself or have an obsessive interest in all things about these Porsches. That said, if I hadn’t watched this video, I wouldn’t consider rebuilding an engine for my Cayman. Now that I’ve seen it done on my TV screen, I might attempt an engine rebuild in the future. If you’re mechanically inclined and are pretty sure you’ll rebuild your engine down the line, then consider
M9X Engine Assembly
as homework. Watch it once, maybe twice to familiarize yourself and gain some confidence before starting the work.
M9X Engine Assembly
is not aimed at the novice hobby mechanic. With this in mind, please note the box set leaves some crucial steps out that don’t have anything to do with engine building. Gathering parts for the build is largely left up to you. Though Raby provides valuable insight with regards to some parts, his focus is almost purely on assembly. The series also won’t tell you how to disconnect and drop the engine from your car, how to disassemble the engine, how to catalog parts removed during disassembly, or how to install the flat six back into your car. I will venture as far to say that leaving out these pre- and post-rebuild steps was likely an intentional decision by Raby and his crew. After all, if you’re considering rebuilding your engine, you should be comfortable and competent enough to remove, disassemble, and install it.
The bottom line:
Focus On: M9X Engine Assembly
is an invaluable tool for those who plan to rebuild their engine. For everybody else, it’s a new way to learn about the M9X series of engines, but not required viewing.
Nice write-up Bill. The fact that you binge-watched over the course of two weekends reminds me that I need to be careful with Jake's DVD's. I get sucked in to great TV series, and have a hard time pulling out. Think Homeland, Prisoners of War, and The Americans. I need to find a good therapist that will receive shipment of Jake's DVDs, and only release one disc to me per week or so.
I don't know how this would ever fit into my crazy world of work, work travel, family, youth sports, etc., but it would be a thrill to find a group of like-minded Bay Area M9x owners who did a "team rebuild" in a common shop somewhere. I saw a post recently to this effect in Maryland, but that's a bit far for me.
Again, thanks for the write up. Nice photos. And thanks Jake for the content. I will own it soon.
