Appears its paint that might have rubbed off - more than likely the hood was attempted to be opened with the wipers up (Ive made that mistake).

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking to purchase my first Porsche 911. Have driven a 991.1 (2013 Carrera, non S) that I have been eye balling. Just drove a very cherry 03 996 TT today. Same miles as the pre owned 991.1. Great records, great owner. The 991.1 also has complete records. Ultimately really torn between the two cars: 996 TT pros: 1) Nostalgia. Its an 03 and this was my dream car when I was in high school. 2) That torque is no joke. For a 17-18 year old car, unbelievable how fast this car is for its time. 996 TT cons: 1) Age. Its a 17-18 year old car. This particular car is in exceptional shape with 20k miles, but still has its fair share of little cosmetic discrepancies. Some clear coat peeling on hood, minor rock chips but otherwise very clean. 2) Price. Basically the same price negotiated for a 991.1 which is 10 years newer. 991.1 pros: 1) Newer car with newer comfort features. Blue tooth, etc. 2) Clean. Very minor quibbles. Same mileage (20k miles). 991.1 cons: 1) Doesnt have the same kick in the pants or nostalgia as the 996. Essentially what Im seeing is 996TT with 20k miles going for 59-62k. Once in the 30-40k mileage territory they drop almost 10k. Both cars will undergo a thorough PPI. All things considered - price being the same, what are your thoughts? **cross posting to 991 forums**

POST 2Original post

You want to ask on the 996tt forum. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum-61/ The 996tt will probably depreciate less and very easy to get more power out of it. The 991 will be more comfortable and have more tech and you can still get an extended warranty. The choice is yours, no bad choice to make.

POST 4Original post

If you wrench on your cars, 996 is pretty easy to work on and the turbo 996 is pretty dependable, from all accounts.

POST 5Original post

996 TT FTW EASY to work on yourself. Daily drier with very little depreciation. POWER is amazing and if you want more can e easily modified even with just a Cobb tune DME program. Mezger engine is reliable People have 400k-600-k miles on them!! Very few cons i.e coolant lines Clear coat is easy to ix.

POST 6Original post

If it's a 991 Carrera, non-S, Turbo no doubt. If it were an S, I'd say 991 as those are just amazing.

POST 7Original post

The 996 turbo can be a great track car, a great drag car, a great GT car, if you want to mod it. If that ain't your thing, and you just want a GT/Sports car, get the 991.

POST 8Original post

I think the 996 is a better value compared to the 991. What does your gut tell you? If the 996 has been a dream car I would lean towards that, they are only going to get older. Whereas if you get a 996 and 5 years down the line want a 991 they are still relatively new.

Always good to have options. I am new 911 owner in the last 2 years and have a 996. My first car in high school was a 914, so I always liked Porsche. I was a bit price constrained. Initially started considering an air cooled, but didnt know there was a huge run up in prices the last ~10 years, so that wasnt an option. My recommendation would be, buy what you can afford. Second, your initial buy-in price is not final. There will be maintenance expenses, at various levels. I have never worked on cars, but with the help of this forum and YouTube videos, I have been doing 90% of my own maintenance. I now even have a lift, which I would have never thought 5yrs ago. What Im trying to say. If Porsches / 911s are new to you, get yourself into a car you wont be afraid to learn on. This will give you an appreciation for the true expenses, simplicity / complexity of these cars. Then decide later how you can trade up, or keep what you purchased. 996 and 996 Turbos are at the bottom of their price curves, so there wont be much if any deprecation going forward!

POST 10Original post

While I'd think the 996 Turbo is a solid car with it's Mezger engine, I'd still have to know if it was manual or not. Seems like most of them were tiptronic. If the 991 was a manual, then I'd go with it. The engine in the Turbo is more robust and not affected by cylinder bore scoring like the Alusil bores of the 9A1 in the 991, but we're still too early in the game to know the severity of 9A1 scoring. The nikasil in the mezger is nill. But with the old 996, you'll have lots of other things to maintain. Remember, you're talking about a 17 year old car versus a 7 year old car. The 996 will feel more "analog" over the 991, but both cars will be a blast to own. I just prefer manual even though my wife wants my next Porsche to be automatic. Oh well.

Mine too! Most 996 owners have a N/A because they can't afford the TT. I'm one of them.

Both cars are manuals.

POST 13Original post

The nostalgia factor is no joke, I'm with you on it. While I could afford something newer and better, my fair weather daily is a cream puff 6spd 2001 S4. It was one of the holy grail cars me and my best friend lusted after during our early 2000's high school youth. Some really great car culture back then. Every drive brings me back to those days and it feels great. Similarly, I remember sitting in my dorm a year or two later scouring the early internet for videos of the 996tt because it was such a monster for the day. When I finally found a 30 second video clip accelerating from 0-160 it was hard to believe and I must have watched it 100 times. Different world back then that doesn't even feel that long ago. So as you can tell, my vote is for the 996tt. The 991 is just a used car; the 996 is immortalized with our youth

POST 14Original post

Either choice would be great, but a turbo with a manual transmission is becoming difficult to find. The true Porsche turbo experience is there in spades with the 996 cars; lag initially, followed by neck-snapping thrust. It’s really fun. For a daily driver, I’d take the 991. For a weekend or fun car, I’d probably lean towards the 996 turbo.

It's interesting people say the TT 6MT is hard to find... pretty much all the ones listed on the classifieds here are 6MT, as well as CarGurus/Autotrader. I was looking for a Tip one and only found 1-2?

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Posted this on the Turbo forum also: I just want to say thank you so much for your replys. What a great community. The black 996TT I saw was originally on BAT. Very well represented there. Here was the original link: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...-911-turbo-19/ Current owner is the third owner. All history is there. I was wrong about the clear coat peeling. Appears its paint that might have rubbed off - more than likely the hood was attempted to be opened with the wipers up (Ive made that mistake). I spoke to my paint protection guy and he said he could take care of it. Car is undergoing a PPI today. Will let you know what we find!

This is the hardest decision. The 991 I can get in and drive comfortably 500 miles and not think twice. The 996 I might second guess myself. Not because I dont think the car could make it - just creature comforts. The 996 feels all the above described - raw, analog, monster.

This is a huge deciding factor. Honestly, owning a P-car is a dream come true. Someone said above or another thread - the 996 is holding its value. I can always enjoy it. The 991 will be there tomorrow for me if need be. p.s. I had a Nogaro blue B5 S4. I loved that thing. Had a dream to turn it into an RS4 but never got around to it. Lovely car.

POST 19Original post

buy the one that's right for how YOU plan on driving it, that's what matters.

POST 20Original post

eventually the 996TT will be worth more than the 991 Carrera.

i have owned for about 10 years now. Lately I have wanted to buy a b5. It seems like the survivors are pretty well sorted out by now. Great cars. If you want to own two twin turbo classics, buy the TT!

POST 22Original post

I'm looking at a 996TT today. One is 2001 with 15K miles the other is 2004 with 17K miles. Saw them yesterday and was wowed. 01 is Artic Silver, 04 Basalt Black. It's gonna be a good day.

Why a 991 over a 996 as a GT car?
