Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run compressor without the engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill leak up' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

knowing that I had a slow leak and the car was not going to be used I had jacked up that corner to prevent collapsing the tire on the rim

does the car does the car need to be running in order to use the inflator?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

who has who used the OEM inflator? I'd like to pump up a slow leak but don't want to start the car since the weather prevents me from driving and apparently idling a cold engine is about the worst thing you can do to it.
Yep, I actually use it after an autocross (drop hot tire pressure while hot lapping) and it works well. Pretty loud, but does the job. As hatchet has said the lighter socket is hot.
I use store bought inflators in all my vehicles, and they tend to pump faster with the car running. If you have another vehicle, you could just park next to it and pump from the other vehicle.
Idling a cold engine isn't the worst you can do to it. Sitting without running is pretty bad. Seals tend to dry up. Idling it up to operating temperature in the cold is fine. Reeving it up to about 4-5k RPM after it warms up is fine as well. When I drive in the cold (here it only gets down to about 30degF), I usually keep the RPMs under 4k until my oil temperature gets to operating temperature, then its redlining after that.
I have used the OEM pump a bunch of times and it works great for me, especially during my numerous misadventures. just turn the car to accessory and fill the leak up. I am not sure how that may impact your battery since I was daily driving my car at the time. I don't know about the cold engine idling, but its better to be safe than sorry.
Cool. Thanks guys. My compressor is two states away.. I'm not worried about the seals drying out because it's only going to be a few weeks. One thing that seems to make sense is that your engine will never see less lubrication then when it gets started. For that reason the Porsche Engineers recommend that a car gets driven first thing after starting it. It's the most effective way to restore lubrication.
Weather turns nice for a minute so I got after it. Turns out the thing didn't work. Encouraged by the post above regarding Misadventures I kept fiddling. Tried moving the switch around. Tried wiggling the cigarette lighter. Nothing. Figured I could remove the wheel and take it to the local gas station but first I disassembled the inflator and jumped the on off switch with a short wire. What do you know? Worked like a charm. Plugged it into the cigarette lighter and pumped up my now completely flat tire. I can see how this thing will come in handy.
1. I ran the compressor without the engine on. The car started fine yeah.
2. The Limited instructions to suggest you should not use it for more than 5 minutes. I ran mine for approximately 4 minutes.
3. The tire was essentially completely flat. 4 minutes brought it up to 38 lb.
4. knowing that I had a slow leak and the car was not going to be used I had jacked up that corner to prevent collapsing the tire on the rim
