Suggestion

Much cheaper for Porsche to just change the manifolds, and since its already 200cc smaller, it doesnt have to be a radically different engine than the 3.4.

Use 3.4 intake and exhaust manifolds= no bottleneck

Suggestion

The big bottleneck on the 3.2 is the intake and exhaust manifolds, but if putting in a 996, then use the 3.4 intake and exhaust manifolds= no bottleneck..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious if anyone here has a '99 996 with a Boxster 3.2L engine swapped in. I have a few questions if you do. Please PM me if you can. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 16375555

I think neilll did it.

POST 3Original post

Why would you want to do this? Cost? The 3.2 makes less power.

POST 5Original post

The 2.5 would be super cheap. But obviously pretty slow

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 16375754

I believe LN Engineering can take any boxster engine and up the displacement with nickies to be used in a 996. Am I wrong here folks?

POST 8Original post

Yes, someone has. I just don’t remember the screen name. He used a clearance RND engine. Saved lots and got his 996 back on the road.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 16375555

I can probably answer your questions.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16375754

Thanks for the help everyone. Neill helped me out. I'll post up the details if the plan works out I'm glad people think it makes almost 50 hp less than the 3.4L. Keeps prices down for guys like me. Lol Cost and power output are the main reasons, but I like doing different things. I am considering swapping in a Cayman 2.7L VC+ M96 into one of my 996s just to see what it's like. The 3.2L doesnt make that much less power than the 3.4L. Once you connect things like the intake manifold and throttle body, with the 3.4L tune, it might make 20-25 hp less. ~275 hp 911 is fine with me!

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16377245

Does the engine weigh less or is it the same?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 16378002

Since the longblocks are virtually identical except 3.2 is 93mm bore and 3.4 is 96mm bore, I would say the 3.2 is heavier by a couple pounds.(thicker cylinders)..

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16378192

Damn....I was hoping it would be lighter....would have made a better case for doing it. Another thing is if someone where to do this and sell the car you would never know it's a 3.2 other than maybe if you notice a bit less power.

POST 14Original post

The engine number is your friend,if it hasn’t been messed with.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source posts: 16378442, 16378449

Right, if the engine started life as a 3.2 the serial number will start with M96/21.....but if it has been rebuilt with new cylinders, it could be as large as 3.8 or even more.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16378442

The people I know of who did this swap said the butt-dyno power difference was negligible. They noticed it, but not enough to lessen the driving experience. I view these cars completely differently from my other cars. My goal with the 996 is to find the most cost-effective solution to keep them running. The engine choices all have enough power to be fun to drive. 200+ hp has always been enough power for a fun driving experience. ~250hp is the sweet spot for me. A running 996 is a good 996, IMO.

That is ridicules, adding 50 H.P. to my Porsche totally changed the driving experience. Most notable when I take a 90 degree turn at a intersection in 3rd gear instead of having to downshift to 2nd.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16378884

That's great. LOL Ah, this forum cracks me up.

...or M96/24 or M96/26.

POST 20Original post

PT3 Any idea what the effect of the boxster heads would be on an engine Taken out to 3.8, inlet and exhaust ports are smaller?? Also I wonder if it's basically the same head so could you always port the 3.2 heads to be more like the 3.4 or better ??

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 16379017

I know for a fact the cams and valve sizes are the same on a 3.2-3.4, verified by the OEM part numbers, and although I haven't compared them directly myself, I remember Len Hoffman saying the ports are the same, so I think he can do the same magic on the 3.2 as he does for the 3.4.. The big bottleneck on the 3.2 is the intake and exhaust manifolds, but if putting in a 996, then use the 3.4 intake and exhaust manifolds= no bottleneck..

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 16379082

That is interesting. I would have expected different cams and ports, but now it makes sense. Much cheaper for Porsche to just change the manifolds, and since its already 200cc smaller, it doesnt have to be a radically different engine than the 3.4.
