Seems like a huge percentage of them are in CA and tend to change hands with some frequency.

For what it's worth my 40th anniversary is for sale for $29k and change with 63k miles, but I am prepared to get a lower amount if it takes too long to sell.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For what it's worth your ad is still on Autotrader, which is why I had you shown in the registry as still having the car for sale.
I am a new member here and I am looking for a 40th 996. I am in California so trying to keep my search to Ca/Az/Nv. I am looking for 50k miles and under, I see what people are asking but I also see them listed forever at those prices. What are these cars really selling for in 2014? Thank you guys for your time, Frank
Not sure where in CA you are but this is in Redwood City. It seems pricey and they have had it for quite sometime. I was going to look at it but I have seen Turbo prices starting to drop into this range. If the link doesn't come through look on Cars.com and search for an 04 911 it will be there, the car is at Carlsen Porsche. There is another one listed in the Rennlist classified for 35K in AZ and there was one on ebay in WA for 29K.

I think price is very dependent of where you live. In S. FL I could sell my car after 3.5 yrs of use down here and break even or make a small profit. I would Say $35k is a fair price +/-
Thank you all for your input so far. I know the car is "rare" but I don't think it is worth $40k for the miles I am looking for......I can get a 4s for that price or a newer 997 and getting close to a turbo? I was thinking $30k is about the right price. Frank
had to make that choice when I bought mine - thing to remember is that a 40th is arguably a better car than a 4S.
You get the same interior upgrades than the 4S and the performance is way better (2WD + most 4S don't have the X51 engine package).
So unless you are set on having a widebody the 40th is the better value.
Same compared to a base 997 - X51 puts you in the same ballpark power wise but the 996 is much lighter.
Then turbo is different game. Turbos prices are going down much slower than the NA (even vs. the C4S). I almost bought a low mileage TT in 09 for $43k when the price tank due to the crisis, and I could have sold it back 5yrs later for almost the same price :-)

Only issue is finding a car in that same price range that gives you as much of a complete package. E46 M3 is not exactly as classy and CLK63 is not as sporty.
I was really looking for a 4s but then I started reading about a 40th and it has some cool features like the paint and the engine HP, but it is a narrow body.......so I am up in the air on what one I want, but for now I am trying to talk myself into the 40th. Frank
I agree on the x51 in the 40th AE and and full leather are hard to bear. I made the decision to go fully loaded 996 40th AE w/x51 over a low option or non x51 997 and have not regretted it. Also, I know C4 and C4s are nice looking because of the wide body but there is a price to pay in extra wright and complexity.
Finally, 996 GT3 is a narrow body which is good enough for me
Don't forget you get LSD on the 40th as well. My understanding is that LSD was only available as an option on '99s and n/a after that.
I was in the same boat as you before. 4s with the hips, or 40th with all the "good" options and a narrow body. I choose the 40th.
I should sell mine! I'm in the Bay Area. RMS and LN bearing is done. And a new clutch at the same time. All with less than 1k on it. (No time to drive the car. Though I did take it out this past Sunday for a nice drive with the wife)
I forgot about the LSD on the 40th. The options that came on this car is the selling point on me wanting a narrow body. I saw 3 last weekend at the Festival of Speed in Fontana and one really stood out to me but was not for sale. Frank
dabank - Living in CA as you do is a huge plus relative to the supply of 40AEs. Seems like a huge percentage of them are in CA and tend to change hands with some frequency. You might want to spend some time perusing the 40AE registry (link is in my signature below). You'll see some pricing history on many of the cars, at least the asking prices (actual sales prices are hard to find). Be patient - you'll find the right one. There are plenty out there.
Note that the difference in dimensions (width) of the wide body C4s/Turbo and the narrow body C2/GT3/C4 is only 2.3" (72.0" vs 69.7"). That's a little over an inch per side.
The ones that are asking $40k that i have seen been on tue market since last year even the ones asking $35k been sitting. There have been a couple asking 32k and they are no longer for sale so i would think they have sold, and all of these cars have 50k miles and under. I really belive the selling price sould be around $30/32k people can ask whatever they want. Frank0
Which makes far more sense. With lots of 996TTs and 997S in the $40k range, the 40th AE gets tougher to justify. At $30k it's really only competing with the C4S and high mileage base model 997s.
I looked at one local with 29k miles and guy has owned it for 2 years and put 2200 miles on it. When he bought it he did oil change and plugs and nothing since, it has front and rear bumpers repainted and he is asking $34k obo. It has no luggage and he has not records on it but what he did to it. No to sure about it with no records and the repainted bumpers.........Frank
[QUThursday0JAHRE;11290500]Which one is it (limited edition number and VIN)?[/QUOTE]
It is a friends coworker, i am going to go look at it in person
On Thrusday and i will look. Frank

Thanks. Please do let me know the # and VIN so that I can make sure that the registry is updated. I may also have some info on the car in my records that I can provide.
Bought (and brought mine from CA)... probably one of the better places to go car shopping.
You caught me in the wrong mood, just a couple of months ago I would have let mine go for $30K.
And it already has all the IMS stuff sorted, plus 2 years of oil analysis at this point.
Enjoy the search, it's almost the best part.
I received an offer of 39,000 for my 40th AE with 59k and still under CPO last december. I turned the offer down. Decided to keep this one, and start saving for a 2009+ C4 or C4s. Currently have 67k on the odometer, drive it almost daily. I attended a Porsche event last year in Pomona and a turbo owner told me he had trouble keeping up with me (don't really believe it, but that is what he said).
Glad to hear you kept the car. I always admired your pics as to its terrific condition. I've updated the registry to show that it is no longer for sale. For what it's worth your ad is still on Autotrader, which is why I had you shown in the registry as still having the car for sale.
Nice car, I see you live in Alta Loma I live in Spring Valley Lake just up the 15 from you.
I am still looking....... I would also buy a Aero car with the Gt3 look in yellow. Frank
Frank - what ever happened with the 40AE that you were going to see yesterday? I'm keenly interested in getting info including the # and VIN of that car.
Just turned 82k...
I bought it with 63k with a new clutch, IPD upgrade and the 60k service complete.
I had the IMS done last year after I heard a cat rattle. It was in OK shape, but I decided that since I wasn't going to replace the clutch anytime soon, I'd sleep better if it was done.
It's also nice to have it paid off... Probably my favorite aspect. It's all mine.
This one popped up in the Dallas area

- Aftermarket rims and seats. It's in Richardson, relatively close to me if anyone wants me to go check it out on their behalf.
That's #251 owned by 6ta1 on this board. Anyone interested in his car should check out the extensive posting he did a few months ago about the mods on his car:

. Located in Houston, TX. Asking $33k.
Thnx
Matt
Yeah put me second in line on those seats! I feel like the 40ths all ended up with those worthless "comfort seats" because whoever ordered the car was just trying to option the car to be as expensive as possible. I'm pretty sure you had to pay extra to not get the sport seats.
I didnt realise they paid extra for the Plane Jane electric seats.....thats dissapointing, I thought the sports seats were an option. For some strange reason my original owner ordered it with the rear wiper as well, now thats a waste of $
I haven't seen it on CL any longer so perhaps it sold. I know that he was asking in the $29K range but I don't know where he ended up. You might PM him here on RL (he's 6ta1).
