The problem is everyone that buys a $800 intake for performance reasons are too scared to dyno it fearing they could've just had some good hookers and blow instead.

I got CEL code P1276 a couple of times which indicates weak CO2 sensors, then I had to change my gas cap during an emissions check because the seal was cracked and the CEL has remained off ever since.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I have the Fabspeed performance package on my '99 C4 and I asked them why I only have 1 air inlet but they show 2 on their website. They said they redesigned it 8 months ago with the dual inlet and it added an additional 12 HP.
Is this possible?
Without seeing the dyno sheet with RPM, Air Flow and BSFC numbers its hard to say where they picked up the 12hp...
for example.. Its possible they gained 12 hp over stock at 3700 rpm, but who cares!! What does it make over peak, and more importantly, what is the torque curve and increase in those numbers....
Also you guys are forgetting the most important part.. THE SOUND! This is one of THE best upgrades you can do for the 996/997. Regardless of if you are the type of person that will feel the difference, I guarantee you will hear it and you will love it. Seriously intoxicating.
I got CEL code P1276 a couple of times which indicates weak CO2 sensors, then I had to change my gas cap during an emissions check because the seal was cracked and the CEL has remained off ever since. I don’t know if it is related but I thought I would relay the information because I was assuming the CEL was related to the Fabspeed exhaust.
Looks pretty but with only the OEM snorkel on the left side of the motor to feed the filters I wonder what's being sucked into the right side filter. My concern would be that hot air from the engine bay would raise the ambient temp of combined intake air which could pull timing via the ECU. The OEM air box is mostly a sealed unit for a reason. Now if you were to install the X51 twin snorkel decklid.....
Nice job Fabspeed.. do you have an AFR and tune with that set up?
I see that was a smoothing run, how many seconds was that pull. Sorry, Im used to Super Flo readouts..
Here's another photo. I installed this about a month ago, it is awesome! My friend about crapped his pants when we floored it on the highway for its test run, the sound is fantastic.
Although this piece is pretty, some people think that this maybe overkill and not entirely convinced that the motor can ingest the additional air that intakes like these can provide. Remember the engine is just a big air pump. Unless you change out cams, intake manifold, port the heads, the engine isn't really sucking any more air in past a certain point.
But enough of this recycled blabbing that's been going on. The most objective way to scientifically measure restriction and flow is with a manometer which not too many people have done. Google it as I don't feel like writing a lengthy post on it.
Now if you just mainly want the sound or if you want to invite some buddies over to sit on lawn chairs to stare at your engine bay while sipping on some tea or lemonade, that's a different story.
The factory airbox has holes in the bottom of the filter housing so it's already sucking air from the engine bay. Agreed a twin snorkel decklid is best solution.
The twin snorkel decklid is the perfect addition to this intake

The holes are there primarily for drainage purposes and are small in nature compared to the larger intake piping sucking in most of the outside air.
I love people feeding into the hype all the time: "shiny, polished, anodized, carbon fiber, adjustable, twin, titanium, bigger is better, etc.", LOL.
Me too, LOL. I think most here realize the gains, if any, will be small and sometimes it's more about personalization than outright performance - "is the juice worth the squeeze".
Yes the holes are there for drainage and I hesitate to belabor the point, but I think if one were to calculate the area of the holes and compare it to the area of the opening of the intake pipe one would find it is a significant percentage. The OEM intake is not a CAI as is so often repeated.
Sorry, not trying to be a jerk but my character insists I either confront (or ultimately ignore) irrational beliefs/statements and at least explain my reasoning.
I wonder if the holes were sealed if the reduction in volume would act as an air restrictor and limit power. I guess one would have to calculate the volume desired by the engine at full throttle and compare it to the volume accessible through the snorkel sans the drain holes. I wonder if Porsche took the volume provided by the drain holes into account in providing the need of the engine at WOT.
Interesting questions, would you agree?
Unsolicited opinion: Buying this intake for added performance is equivalent to buying a Penthouse for the ads. Even if this product
reduced
horsepower by 10% and randomly sent 40,000 volts to the driver seat, I'd still be tempted to install one. But only if the amperage was low.
You're talking about a series of small holes versus the large air filter in the engine bay. Nit picking at best. Please tell me you can tell the difference.
I have dyno'd many different air box configurations on 996 and 997's race cars. The OEM air box with a BMC filter element, sealed drain holes, and CAI tube produced the most WHP in both cars with 1 exception. That was a very expensive custom box built by a successful race shop that was insulated and isolated from the heat in a engine bay. Oh and it was only 1 filter...
I have nothing against the Fabspeed box, as I said previously it very pretty and I'm sure it sounds great. But heat in the engine bay and subsequently the intake is the biggest drawback to motor performance. Ignore at your own peril....
I am pretty sure there will be ZERo HP gain and maybe even a loss but all I can think of is the glorious sound. Plus, it's shiny and carbon fiber "like"?
I love how this forum is like, "show me the dyno #s or STFU adn GTFO". Then someone shows you the dyno #s and the forum is like, "pfft, I dont believe that. Im gonna argue just to argue." Its kinda comical.
Well IMHO, there is very little you can get modifying a NA Porsche. Certainly not the HP claimed...with a change in airflow. Dyno's on some random car with a sample size of one is meaningless...sorry I'm a statistician....
As for looks....awesome. Here's mine....
Seeing independent dyno tests hold more merit than seeing one from the seller which is a conflict of interest in my books.
The problem is everyone that buys a $800 intake for performance reasons are too scared to dyno it fearing they could've just had some good hookers and blow instead.
I know quite a few people that has this piece, yet I haven't come across a single independent dyno yet. Are they too cheap to plunk down $75 for a 2 run dyno session when they just spent $800? Dunno, you tell me.
First of all I have no affiliation with Fabspeed but I have owned a manufacturing company for over 20 years and I understand the need for companies to present accurate data they can back up with testing if they want to stay in business. I put this out there to get the opinions of this very experienced membership and thank you for all your input. I will be purchasing this dual input unit and I have 3 buyers lined up to by my single intake unit.
Fabspeed presented their testing results done on their very expensive Dyno testing equipment as shown in the video on their ‘about us page”
http://www.fabspeed.com/about-us/
. Companies like this do not have high growth curves such as Fabspeed that present false data so I will have to accept their results. I will probably not be able to feel the difference but I will be able to hear it, see it (eye candy every time you open the deck) and offer more air to my N/A engine in Colorado where air is thin. I would like to get more information on the double snorkel deck because that makes a lot of sense for the right intake.
Great theory but usually not the case with performance products....I have access to a dynapak dyno (one of the best for tuning) and you can prove your theory by sending me the intake and I will independently test the unit. Upon completion, I will send the unit back to you. I will even make an unedited video of the entire process and show all operator settings for complete transparency. Everyone is welcome to witness this test, I'm in San Diego.
Care to take the challenge?
Perhaps they just don't see the value of paying to dyno their car after they already spent the money on the part. Two runs is not going to be sufficient to verify anything. Will the time and cost be worth it to verify that you made 12hp? Do you dyno your car before and after every part you install?
In a perfect world, Fabspeed would hope that all potential customers saw everything on an even playing field, we obviously know that there are some instances where the world is truly not enough. To think that as a company, Fabspeed having invested tens of thousands of dollars into a product that takes months of engineering and testing only to fake the results and to have them easily debunked by a private dyno is just plain silly.
In the same breath, if Fabspeed wanted to be cut rate, they could have hired a regular person to do my job. But, they didn't. They decided to hire me with my degree in High Performance Automotive Technology including extensive knowledge of mechanical theories, hands on engine building, dyno testing, product testing etc.
It is in MY best interest (as a true enthusiast for performance cars) and in the companies best interest to help provide quality products for quality cars. The best part of my job is being able to help people complete their projects and make their cars unique to their own preference. Helping provide you guys not only with great products but also with a memorable, easy and pleasurable experience when dealing with myself (As a spokesman for Fabspeed) is very gratifying for me and is the best part of my job.
The door is always open here at Fabspeed for visitors and my phone is always right by my side, so never hesitate to call and ask for Evan if you would like to chat, I am ALWAYS open to talk cars (ask my girlfriend, she never hears the end of it).
Evan
Evan, that right there is an educated response and shows your professionalism.
You guys have a good looking product, its much nicer than the (*&*) cold air intake that I had on my car a few years ago that always had my cel come on. Not only does your product look great but it has proven results.
This can go back and forth with no end. As I've said before google manometer airflow test. You don't need a dyno for that and eliminates all the variables that come with dyno testing.
I've been slacking on modifying my "twin" intake, partly because I have two other very capable intakes that do the job just as well.
So if someone purchased your product and dyno tested it and it didn't come close to your numbers, would you refund their money? Is that the level of confidence you have in your product?
I know what a manometer test is. The problem is that few people care how much an intake flows. They care about the bottom line - does it bring more power out of the engine? If your intake flows 10 times as much as stock, but the throttle body is the restriction, it's not going to mean anything. This is why I feel that dyno testing, when done properly, is the better measure for a performance intake.
Not going to take sides here but I do respect you vendors for having to put up with so much skepticism and handling it professionally.
I have one of your 200 cell cats and have been very happy with it so far. It was less expensive than the stock equivalent, looks better, sounds better, and although I may be mistaken does make my car feel a little more peppy. Granted I've not done any baseline or "after" testing but I feel it was a worthwhile investment.
Thank you for your continued support in the 996 community.
I too have the Fabspeed 200 cell cats x pipe...and yes it does sound great and guess what...more HP too. Haters are going to hate no matter what.
Any stock air box can be improved, in fact almost anything car related can improved imho.
So then you do know that when properly setup, you're not really measuring air flow per se but the actual pressure drop in the system, correct? And you do know what you can ascertain by the pressure drop readings, right?
2 orders deposited. There is limited space for this sale, so if I have PM'ed you or you have further interest, please make sure to call and place the $50 deposit so I can guarantee our spot and lock in the price point.
Thanks for the support!
Evan
Using a manometer will produce more accurate and targeted results than a MAF reading but a MAF can still measure the system as a whole and give you a general more broader indication(better than a butt dyno for sure).
First off a MAF measures a few different things instead of isolating just the pressure. It measures the total amount of air by sensing the air, velocity, temp, and even humidity all at one time.
MAF measures the whole system so if you want to know what a particular intake pipe or filter does itself, you can't just isolate that part. Since it measures the whole system, anything downstream can also affect it's readings(headers for example) so it would be nearly impossible to just isolate just the effects of a intake.
There are other factors too but these are the main points.
Hi Guys
It is Joe Fabiani the president of Fabspeed Motorsport a PCA member since 1986. Our thin walled carbon fiber competition air-intake system FLAT out works as advertised. The POWER that you see on the Dyno graph is 100% untouched and uncorrected and NOT tampered with. Fabspeed Motorsport has a DYNO Jet 424 XlC with linksys and an Automated Weather staion so NOTHING is inputted for Dyno results.
History:
I personallydeveloped a 996 airbox upgrade kit over 14 years ago that makes power on all NA 996 cars by increasing airflow through the stock airbox. I made a silicone 4 ply hose and a 996 airbox MUFFLER eliminator. Dyno tested by many independent shops. I sold and supplied these simple 996 OEM Porsche airbox performance upgrade kits to several front running and winning Grand Am Koni/Continental teams.
These engines are air pumps and just want to breathe freely. The Fabspeed parts worked. Real Racers and especially Pro-racers typically dont mention any advantages they have found in terms of decreased Lap-times from power and chassis improvements.
LATER>
Several Grand Am Porsche 996/997 Professional Koni-Continental racers had sloppily welded up various J pipes and Y pipes in stainless steel and aluminum and had good meaningful results on the Dyno and on the RACE-track.
Fabspeed Motorsport CNC mandrel bent several of these J & Y pipe competition air-intake systems for Racers and Fabspeed then Dyno developed, road and race tested the J & Y pipes. Each and every 996/997/997.2 car picked up serious power and great sports car sound. Even on a stock 996/997 the addition of the intake system made the car sound awesome.
Bottomline -- Racers had a significant performance advantage over any and all Porsche cars running stock OEM airboxes. OEM closed Porsche airboxes are designed to minimize Induction Noise and KEEP the overall cars acoustic signature muted and quiet. European Swiss noise regulations are the driving forces when OEM car manufacturers design these cars.
Furthermore, Porsche and others always leave ROOM for increased power in the engine department so $17,000 X51 engine upgrades can be sold during typical 5 year Porsche 911 model year spans. FYI- the Fabspeed Y pipe competition inttake outperforms the 997 X51 airbox and the 997.2 stock airbox.
Come on 993 285HP, 1996 296 HP, 2002 996 + HP 2005 997S 355HP, .....Porsche wants you to keep trading up to newer +25HP stronger cars every 3 to 5 years. Its a moneymaking marketing sales exercise.
FINALLY-
The Fabspeed 996/997 competition Y airtake kit was Solidworks CAD modeled and flowed and we 3D printed several versions in-house and the we incrementally Dyno developed and tested everything.
Once the final Fabspeed 996/997 competition Y pipe air-intake design was finalized I contracted for billet CNC aluminum tooling so the parts could be produced in thin walled smooth carbon fiber for strength, beauty, and ability to not absorb heat. Fabspeed designed a carbon fiber heat shield to block any potential heat and clean up the engine bay. We truly did everything possible to maximize horse and sports car sound. The systems comes with everything needed for installtion and Fabspeed has detailed Video installation instructions. This is NOT a rotomoulded thick walled ABS plastic POS system.
The bootomline is that the Fabspeed Competition air-intake is simple to install and is a very cost effective performance parts that provides significant power and torque is all across the RPM band.
You are all cordially invited to come by our facility to see these systems for yourselves. We even Dyno developed these carbon fiber competition air-intake for 996 GT3, 997 GT3 and 991 n/a cars and have had good results.
Yes, but if everything is the same and the only thing altered in the entire system is the intake/filter, the MAF reading would be accurate enough to know if it's doing anything.
..I'm a fairly new 996 owner (an '03 C2)--and I installed the original fabspeed intake after many months of driving the car with the stock intake.. I can say that it did change the car (this is the only mod done to the car--that I know of)..just slightly, but it did change. Sound is the most noticeable.. and I feel that the car got more lively in the upper rpm range (4-6k).. but I really know nothing of motor/performance science.
In the little reading that I've done on the X51 package for my car.. it changes the intake to basically what's in the GT3 car (its metal.. the one on my car is a polymer), and doesn't it also give you the plenum and intake from the GT3 (with cams, valves, pistons, and the crank--and software)? Again, with what little I know.. I think there is a fine line where doing one thing, and not doing another can do great, and costly damage to the engine. I have seen precision in this car that I never imagined (this is my first real car)--my gearhead buddies (who own american sports/muscle cars) also say the same.
I would like to see more stats on the tuner's product blurbs.. there are a couple types of dyno's, no? (and some controversy as to their accuracy?)..a lot of different variables, and I don't believe that you can lock down theories with just one sample. In the same paragraph I'll also say that dealing with Fabspeed was a most pleasant exchange.. Good guys to deal with, in my opinion.
D'OH!!!!! My wife was great enough to get one of these for me for my birthday earlier this month; really kind of p*ssed that in her kindness/wanting to keep it a secret we missed out on the cost savings
Mine must have been a somewhat early kit, as it had no instructions included. Also, have had a few minor fitment issues. Nothing serious, but just need to discuss them/see what I need to adjust.
However, having said all that, I will say that (on my car at least) it made a noticeable improvement in throttle response and high RPM breathing. Car does pull harder in the upper rev range. Even my wife, who is an objective cynic, noticed it and commented on how much it felt like the engine breathed better. I also asked my neighbor to drive it before and after; ha had same impressions (didn't mention what i thought the differences were before either drove it) So can I confirm "X" HP gain? No, since I don't have a dyno. I can tell you its really well made and made a difference you can feel.
And no, it wasn't due to more noise (although it sounds great). I had previously removed/blocked off my resonator, and cut it away to increase airflow in the stock box. So while the fabspeed is somewhat louder than that, it isn't significantly louder, and wouldn't cloud the perception.
Just my 2 cents, FWIW, YMMV
For those of us who live in a climate where it rains constantly, would we be best served with the OEM box or will this work fine in inclement (rainstorms) weather? The PO of my car had a ,&! Installed and it was one blown MAF after another. With stock intake, no issues. I want the sound, but not at the expense of MAFs going bad due to too much water intrusion...
To date, I have not had a single complaint of MAF failure due to moisture. The cone filters sit very tight against the bottom of the deck lid, but they allow just enough room for the excessive moisture to find it's way around the filters and dissipate in the engine bay.
Evan
If I was to join this "volume" sale, what would be the price? to 33770
thanks ,
Peter with a 01 C 4 , which has the Fabspeed aluminum exhaust system, and love the sound that comes out !!
