For example, on my S430 after an Airmatic strut failure, I used two short pieces of 2x4 (one in each strut) to get home where I could repair the system at my leisure for a total cost of under $800.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, I've been limping along a few days with a slow leak in my rear tire - screw in sidewall. My new PS2 was ordered Monday. The good news, my tire arrived. The bad, I'm sitting in a gas station with a flat and it won't hold air. Bonus, I have to leave for the airport in 2 hrs. Tow truck called.
Bummer. Good luck. Seriously though a plug gets you off the road easier than you think. If you have never done one here is a how to.
How to plug a tire ( Repair nail in tire ) - YouTube
I think a plug might be tough. I'd be up for trying, but no supplies, tools and inside sidewall. Most importantly, limited time. One tow truck arrived, but it couldn't get low enough for the P-car. Another one Bering dispatched. Tick tock.
Remove the wheel to get to the inside sidewall. Plug in sidewall is just temporary solution, not intended to be long term or high speed. Where's your spare, btw?
Yes, you can. I have this kit and string plugs for my motorcycle and have used it on my Volvo also. I have seen guys plug tire sidewalls also in an emergency situation. The video in #4 is missing a step; there is a tube of glue that you should use with the string plugs.
You can plug through the tread, nothing wrong with that, I've done it several times myself and travel with a plug kit in my frunk. But you can't put a plug in the sidewall; there's no steel belting there and the rubber will just split if you try it. If the damage is to the corner or sidewall (as in adcampo's case), you're SOL without a spare.
Ahhhh no. Been there done that and plugged a sidewall just fine to get mobile to a better location. Split the sidewall ? LMFAO he had a screw slow leak.
You "can" plug a sidewall, but good luck finding a tire shop that will do it. If you are out on the road and you don't have your kit with you, then you're SOL.
You can always find a screw to plug the hole so it will hold air for a while.
There are all kinds of Eastern Block techniques that can get you to your destination.
Hey adcampo, props on fessing up re the spare tire.
As for plugging the sidewall, there is obviously a "failure to communicate" here. Proponents of sidewall plugging are saying it is just an emergency fix to get you into a better situation (to a tire shop or just to last a few days to get a replacement tire via Tirerack, for example).
Lots of stuff you can do to get yourself out of a bind that aren't going to be long term fixes. For example, on my S430 after an Airmatic strut failure, I used two short pieces of 2x4 (one in each strut) to get home where I could repair the system at my leisure for a total cost of under $800. Would have cost about $7,000 to fix at the dealership.
I still wouldn't try it. The steel belts on the tread really limit how large a hold like that can spread and are what allow plugs to be a successful repair, but they don't extend beyond the tread. If vertically-oriented nylon members in the sidewalls split, that's not a slow leak: it's a blowout.
I've only tried plugging a sidewall once and I'm pretty damned glad it failed while the car wasn't moving, because the way is splot would have been scary at any speed above 15mph. Sidewall damage is when you suck it up and break out the spare.
