Since the high speed function of the fans appears to be operational via the AC system and via Durametric, and the fans would not activate with AC off, even when the 102C set point was reached (As reported by Durametric), I am wondering if I should have let the car run longer to raise the temperature higher?

This begs the question that I asked in an earlier post, Which I will ask in a slightly different way this time- is it possible that the temperature reported is not accurate and that is why the fans did not activate on high speed, even when the coolant temp was almost 2 degrees centigrade above the set point of 102C?

Assuming the Durametric ECTS actual value was engine coolant temperature, I could not get any fans to activate while idling in my garage through the set points of 96.75C for low speed or 102C for high speed (from- Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Today I had the Durametric connected to enable the OBC function (exterior temperature) on my dash display. While I was connected, I decided to activate the fans. When I tried fan 1, nothing happened. When I tried fan 2, the fan turned on. So, I thought that I might have a problem with one of my fans. I tried again after going for a drive. Only this time I went to the front of the car to listen at each front corner after activation. Fan 1 activation, again nothing at either front corner. Fan 2, listening at both front corners, both fans were running. The actual values available list a couple of values that I am not sure what they are, ECTS and IATS. I am assuming that ECTS is engine coolant temperature, but have no idea if this is correct. Assuming the Durametric ECTS actual value was engine coolant temperature, I could not get any fans to activate while idling in my garage through the set points of 96.75C for low speed or 102C for high speed (from- Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche). Both fans do activate with the AC activated a few seconds after a cold start, and at operating temperature. If the fan resistors are failed, would the fans run at the high speed upon AC activation, or not at all? Can anyone confirm that ECTS is the engine coolant temperature on the Durametric actual value menu? Input would be appreciated.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, since posting I learned that ECTS is Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Apparently my assumption is correct. Any thoughts about why the fans only come on with the AC, not via the coolant sensor?

POST 3Original post

Durametric only turns on the fans if the key is on, engine stopped. And it only turns them on for about 5 seconds. "Fan 1" is fan low speed. "Fan 2" is fan medium speed or high speed. Not left/right. Some 996's have 2 speed fans and some have 3-speed fans.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks prf, that is good to know. Since the high speed function of the fans appears to be operational via the AC system and via Durametric, and the fans would not activate with AC off, even when the 102C set point was reached (As reported by Durametric), I am wondering if I should have let the car run longer to raise the temperature higher? The highest reported temp via Durametric was 103.8C and no fan activation. Would anyone like to speak as to the accuracy of the temperature as reported by Durametric?

POST 5Original post

The "low speed fan" (same fan for both speeds) is the one on the resistor. If it's not working, the resistor is probably bad...

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 16891023

From the service manual: Electric fan, speed 1 (Ground to DME control unit, terminal 35) Coolant temperature higher than 96.75C or air conditioning switched on. Electric fan, speed 2 (Ground to DME control unit, terminal 36) Coolant temperature > 102C or air-conditioning fluid pressure switch closed (coolant pressure > 16 bar). Note: The electric fans for the radiators are only triggered when the engine is running.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16891336

Mike, thank you. I appreciate your input. I understand what the temperature set points are supposed to be, as I wrote above. What I am trying to relate is that the engine was running, and the coolant reported by the Durametric was higher than both temperature set points noted above (twice), and the fans did not activate...unless I activated the AC. This begs the question that I asked in an earlier post, Which I will ask in a slightly different way this time- is it possible that the temperature reported is not accurate and that is why the fans did not activate on high speed, even when the coolant temp was almost 2 degrees centigrade above the set point of 102C? Or has the coolant temperature sensor failed? Once again I appreciate everyones input.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 16890522

a/c request is for coolant fan high speed, you have bad fan resistors for low speed

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 16891396

It is odd that the low speed fans didnt come on at 102C. If the ECTS has failed, then how is the ECU getting its temperature reading? If Durametric is reporting 102C, the DME should be turning on the fans. If the DME is suspect, you can send it to ECU doctors for a diagnostics test. It requires sending 3 components to them: your key, the DME, and the Immobilizer (which is under the driver seat).

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 16892482

I dont think so. The AC turns on the low speed fans unless the AC pressure is above a certain number.

I sure do hate digging around under the dash of cars, now that I am over 60. I sprung for replacement resistors, though the existing ones do not look like they are in rough shape. No discoloration at all. Any suggestions to test further, without pulling the DME? Maybe pull a low speed fan relay and check for voltage with engine temp above 96.75C?

POST 12Original post

Remember the ECM ground the relay circuit to activate the fans, so your going to have voltage at all times.

POST 13Original post

The air conditioner tells the DME to turn on the fans. The DME is totally in control. If you turn on the A/C and the fan does not go on low speed/speed 1 the pressure in the A/C will quickly build up to the point that high speed/speed 2 is needed. I think you have bad fan resistors. If you really want to check either jump the low speed fan relay at the relay panel or test the resistor. Also note there is a separate fuse for each fan, should be C8 and C10.

Quote If you turn on the A/C and the fan does not go on low speed/speed 1 the pressure in the A/C will quickly build up to the point that high speed/speed 2 is needed. I think you have bad fan resistors. This makes sense. When the AC is turned on, fan activation is not simultaneous, it takes a certain amount of time before the fans turn on. I will jump the relay panel to check the resistors.

I agree with this logic.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good morning. I was able to replace the resistors yesterday. Both fan speeds activated via the Durametric. I am little sore this morning, but none the worse for wear. Before I started, I jumpered the low speed relays and confirmed that the resistors were the culprit. Thank you all for your valuable input. It was very helpful.

Awesome. Yeah, working on these cars would make a lot of people sore, lol.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took the car for a spirited drive this morning. When I got home, I idled the car in the garage for a few minutes to check operation of this fans. Low speed works as it should! Now I have to clean up the mess from the project, which is a pretty mellow Sunday morning project in itself. Thanks again for the help.
