Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok 996 guys, a 997.2 or a 996 Turbo? Porsche guy at the local dealer said the 996 Turbo is one of the best engineered ever...but I don't know about the head lights, which I didn't mind til someone (snotty brother) pointed them out...I had 2 996's...a 2000 C2 and a 2004 C4S. Liked em both....You can get a 996 low mileage Turbo for about the same as a 997.2 early years...I know, "drive them" don't know if I could tell that much anyway.

POST 2Original post

Strong thread, strong sub-forum placement, strong post.

turbo will always be a turbo, while the 997.2 will just be a newer 996. besides the headlights not much difference if you put a 2 din nav in 996. save money for 997 turbo?

POST 4Original post

996 turbo is the best bang for the buck. Get a well optioned turbo. The 997.2 has a A LOT of depreciation still to come.

POST 5Original post

Turbo. I would only replace it with another turbo. /sig

POST 6Original post

Always Turbo! Not Sure though about what you meant you Didn't mind about the Headlights UNTIL your brother pointed them out, BUT you had 2 previous 996's? What am i Missing here?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You know, you think your GF is pretty hot, then someone says, boy she has a big behind and you start to focus on the behind...not the person...

POST 8Original post

If you don't mine the fuel pump problems and the depreciation to come but the headlights are pretty get the 997.2, if you want the best engine on a 911 as of today for the same price as a new bmw 3 series convertible or cheaper get the 996 Turbo.

POST 9Original post

I had a 2000 C2 and 2002 C2. Just picked up a 911 Turbo.....Great ride!

I am all for more behind. Now I messed up grill on the other hand...

POST 11Original post

I think you have to ask yourself a few questions about how you'll use the car. Will it be a daily driver? Will it see track time? Will you drive on the highway for extended periods of time? Do you want modern electronics like bluetooth, Sirius XM, updated navigation, etc.? Are you interested in a 6MT or an automatic or PDK? Are you interested in a stock or mostly stock engine, or do you want to make modifications to add horsepower? I agree with the comments about the 996 TT being the best value in a Porsche right now. It was the flagship of the 996 series and turbos are always special. You just have to buy a car that suits your needs.

Rejecting the 996 Turbo because of the headlights is like rejecting a super model because she has a few freckles. Gimme a break. Don't listen to your brother. Remember if you buy the Turbo the only part of the car he will see is the tail lights. Now the question of 997.2 or a 996 Turbo? Newer is better, but the 997.2 is not a Turbo. Drive examples of both and decide if you want a Turbo or you want a NA car? OTOH, if you do not believe you could learn that much from driving a Turbo vs. a NA car then buy the NA car. Kind of like hamburger and filet mignon steak. If you can't taste the difference buy the hamburger. Oh, if you buy the Turbo and your brother wants to drive it remind him of the ugly headlights.

well that was a moronic statement. back to the topic. A decent 996 turbo is about 45k to 50k. I don't think you'll find a decently optioned, good condition, moderate mile 997.2 for that.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

you are right, about 10 to 15k higher for the 997.2

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the input...have been stuck in snowy MN, so not too many chances to try either. On our way to FL Sat, driving, so when I get there, will start test driving... These forums are so great. Kalashnikov - thanks for the compliment and the gift...wow.

POST 16Original post

One of the cool things about the 996 is that you CAN'T SEE THE HEADLIGHTS FROM THE DRIVER SEAT. Arrgh.

Attachment 895808 Who doesn't like a few freckles? Connecting the dots is fun!

POST 18Original post

As others have said, I'd always go for the Turbo over the "base" newer car. It will always be a Turbo, and one of the more sought after cars of its generation.

POST 19Original post

What about cost of ownership? Which one will have a higher cost of ownership over a period of 5 years? Oh, and please include insurance and speeding tickets.
