Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Have been searching quite a bit but have not found a clear cut answer....also not starting an oil thread Simply want to know if I should be using 0w40 or 5w40 living in Chicago. Car is parked outside. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

I use 0-40 in winter, 5-40 or 5-50 during warmer months.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an 80s BMW where I make seasonal switches. Any harm in just running one or the other or is it not recommended?

POST 4Original post

There's a temperature reference in the owner's manual. Porsche also lists approved oils, but the producers' formulations change frequently (seems more often than the approved list). There's a wide variation in opinions on this, but if I was limited to a single oil, I'd opt for the lower number for normal driving.

POST 5Original post

From what I have picked up on this forum, most are running either 0-40 or 5-40. I believe Porsche's recommendation is 0-40. If you do a lot of cold starts, either in summer or winter, the lower number will be more helpful to the engine. I would not run higher than 5-40 unless my oil pressure was low or I was planning to run the engine hard in hot weather.

POST 6Original post

The Porsche Approved list is updated at least annually and approval validity for individual oils is granted for a period not exceeding 2-3 years. There 163-ish oils on the list 147x 5w-40, 14x 0w-40 and 2x 5w-50 Porsche recommendations on ambient temperatures: Your choice.
