Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Turns out the connector on the end of the cable at the transmission had worn out (it's a ball and socket set up) and disconnected from the shifter bracket.
Leading evidence: 'car never moved' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'car never moved' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect from the shifter bracket' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The shop that installed the drivetrain ordered the part, so I do not have a part number for it.

In my case I replaced just the piece with the bushing in it.

I replaced the same part when my transmission was out for rebuild.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

While attempting to shift my car from Park to Drive I felt a bit of resistance in the shift lever and thought maybe some of the plastic pieces under the gear indicator had jammed so I gave it a bit of tug and it finally came free. Problem is the car never moved from Park. The gear shifter moved, the indicator lights changed, but no gear changes.
Turns out the connector on the end of the cable at the transmission had worn out (it's a ball and socket set up) and disconnected from the shifter bracket. Scary situation as I was at a local university taking pics, in the middle of the lot, it was 90 degrees, the sun was out and I choose the parking lot with the freshest, blackest asphalt!
Those parts are off the Mercedes 722.6 so his car is a 996.2. I had the same piece come apart on my 996 Turbo (same Mercedes transmission). Lucky for me this was while I was changing the conductor plate, so my car was still up on the lift.
Mine is a 2002 C4S. Also the kinda cool thing is all the parts are available individually. I thought I'd have to buy a whole cable just to get the end but Pelican has them.

Great PSA and one more thing to add to the list of possible items to replace before failure.
I'm on the same boat since I have the same Tiptronic set up as the one pictured.
I replaced the same part when my transmission was out for rebuild. You know what you cannot get individually? The rubber boot. I found one for a 928 that looked close enough. I did have to modify it to fit, but that was way better than buying a whole cable for a stinkin' rubber boot.
So is it just the end of the cable or those other stamped pieces of sheet metal? Assuming the replacement is made by adjusting it to the same length and not much else? Probably do this too when the time comes to do the UAOS install.
In my case I replaced just the piece with the bushing in it. The piece screws onto the end of the cable. The bracket was fine and reusable. The shop that installed the drivetrain ordered the part, so I do not have a part number for it.
The stamped metal pieces should not need to be messed with, and doesn't even need to be removed from the transmission to replace the cable end.
The cable end pops onto the ball shaped piece and screws onto the end of the shift cable. The M6 jam nut holds it in place. It's important to clock the cable end piece so that it's not binding on the stamped metal parts. I'd think that if you marked the threads at the end of the original you could screw the new one on exactly the same amount. It's not critical like a tie rod end.
The adjustment of the shift cable is made at the shift console inside the car, just like the manual transmission.
The cable end piece is part# 996-426-380-51 and it's $29 from your friendly Porsche dealer.
Yep, theprf is correct.
Pelican also has the part. I took all my linkages out and gave them a scrubbing. If you take it all out you need 2 each of the clips (Porsche calls them speednuts,
999-166-079-02) that hold the other parts together. They aren't shown in this photo.
