1) When I take the car to the track, the passenger footwell is valuable cargo space that I use for a large waterproof case with some of my tools/equipment.

In the Porsche I use the Rennline holder in front of the passenger seat.

I mounted it under the driver's seat and used velcro to attach the extinguisher to it.

Got a feeling that there might be a strong correlation between guys that replace their IMS being the same risk adverse guys that carry fire extinguishers.

Especially true with older collectible cars - a halotron extinguisher will ensure that your car doesn't burn to the ground and that you don't have to rebuild the entire engine bay if you actually use the extinguisher.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Suspected cause
I suspect most of these guys will never end up using it but will eventually have to replace it as most extinguishers have a certain shelf life before needing replacement.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It looks like the fire extinguisher didn't work...
Does anyone have any reviews or thoughts on this product?

I want to add a fire extinguisher to my car (DD, no track use) and I'd like to mount it as cleanly as possible. All the 996 mounts seem to use the pass seat. Does anyone have any first hand thoughts on passenger comfort with the extinguisher in this spot?
I cannot comment on the extinguisher, however I was involved in Clubman rallying back in the UK and both owned and co-drove in cars with extinguishers mounted in a similar location to those shown on the link and do not recall any real compromise from a comfort perspective.
I have this set-up in my car. I really like it. Every once in awhile the passenger will unhook one of the metal straps on the extinguisher. Other than that no complaints.
I just installed an extinguisher in mine the other day. I used the original Porsche bracket on a recommendation from others. It was cheap, direct from dealer, and tucks in better than most of the aftermarket ones I've seen. Will try to get you a picture later today if you're interested.
+1 on the Porsche bracket. I mounted it under the driver's seat and used velcro to attach the extinguisher to it. It is about as low profile as you can get.

Sometimes carrying an extinguisher is less because you're worried about your own safety and more about making sure the car survives if something does happen. Especially true with older collectible cars - a halotron extinguisher will ensure that your car doesn't burn to the ground and that you don't have to rebuild the entire engine bay if you actually use the extinguisher.
Getting this crap out of your engine bay can be difficult...
I was thinking about getting one of these too. I saw the $500+ version (I believe) on Renntech or Suncoast (I can't remember), but does anybody know where less expensive ones are online that are recommended?
Second drive after a 4-year restoration (this was in March on Corvetteforum.com) - this is why you carry fire extinguishers.
The guy has a video of his car burning to the ground while waiting for the FD.
^ ouch, that must have been heart breaking.
I am midway through a personal restoration project and have already budgeted for the rennline setup. A number of the GT3/RS's we get through our facility have us install them. I know offhand of a couple times where they have proven their worth.
That fire is a bummer. Had an under the hood fire a long time ago when a fuel line split. Did not have an extinguisher with me but was able to pull over and get it out quickly. Looking back I should have let I burn, LOL.
The "Bracketeer" looks interesting and inexpensive to boot. I have used BK mounts in the past and currently have a Speedtactics mount with a 2.5# Haltron extinguisher in the C4S. With the Speedtactics mount you do not have to remove the seat.
This thread is so full of Lol.
Guys you have a 996, not a 356.
The point is to maximize risk on these cars so you can "upgrade".
Any modern, non collectible dd street car shouldn't need a fire extinguisher. On second thought, maybe I should install one on my wife's Acura since I did replace the fuel filter...hmmm...
Got a feeling that there might be a strong correlation between guys that replace their IMS being the same risk adverse guys that carry fire extinguishers.
Hey @Woodman71 - thanks for sharing information on The Bracketeer. Glad you like it in the GTO.
I invented it early last year ... put it into production a year ago, and have sold around 1000 since. I never set out to be in the car fire extinguisher bracket business. I made one for my own car, shared info on a forum, and had people wanting to buy it. That prompted me to invent the universal version.
My passion is driven from my own experience. I have put out four ... yes FOUR car fires in my life. The first when I was 15 out the front of my parent's house (I also saved a toddler from the back of the burning car while the parents just stood back and screamed), the next when I was 16 in my own car ... and two more since then. In fact I was one of the first on the scene of an horrific car fire a few months back ... I ran to help with my extinguisher but the police arrived and ordered me back. And one more ... my brother's show car was destroyed by fire the day he got it on the road. It sucks.
The Bracketeer either clamps onto the seat rail (at the front or rear of the seat) on 991/997 Porche, Gen 5 and 6 Camaro, Gen 5 Mustang, Yukon/Tahoe/Escalade/Silverado/Sierra, F-150/Raptor ... or can be bolted directly onto the seat mount points in older cars like GM A-Body ... or newer Asian stuff like Genesis, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru. It has lateral adjustment to suit a variety of widths, and uses the cradle supplied with the extinguisher ... and is compatible with nearly every 2-2.5lb extinguisher from Kidde, Amerex, or H3R. It fits around 95% of vehicles on the road.
I'll attach some pics so you can get the idea.
Oh ... for those people who say "I'll keep one in the trunk" ... tell me how that goes if you're rear-ended and can't open the trunk ... and the gas tank ruptures in the process. Or ... and this happens all to often ... you are pinned inside the car and it is on fire. If you can get hold of the extinguisher, you may be able to keep the fire at bay until help arrives.
Any questions, please feel free to shoot me an email via the contact at
www.thebracketeer.com
You can also see a heap of install shots if you scroll down on the customer page and there are also a lot of customer testimonials if you are interested too.

Older thread but I just wanted to respond to the idea of "why do you need a fire extinguisher"
Situations like this video are my #1 reason. Comparing it to a medical kit or jumper cables is spot on. I have no plans of my car going up in flames (some days I hope for it depending on what broke that week) but it could be what saves another persons life on the road.

What do you consider modern?
As I was starting the process of ordering my Cayenne I had an incident with by 04 Escape that convinced me to check that box on the order form. Luckily it was minor and the half bottle of water I was able to dump on it caused enough smoke to suffocate itself (idiot shop busted a power steering line and fluid got trapped between the cat and a heat shield) without significant damage. Took 15 minutes for the FD to show up and having seen how fast a car can go I know that is way too long.
I do, however, regret giving Porsche money for the option. The first issue is that they mount it on the passenger side. While it's not an issue in the 996 to lean over and futz with that area, it's a different story in the Cayenne. So either I have to put myself in a position that will complicate getting out in a hurry or have to run around to the other side of the vehicle. Should have been mounted under the driver's legs in my opinion.
The second issue is that you can't replace the factory supplied extinguisher here in the States easily as it conforms to Euro specs. Getting one shipped from Europe is obscene...
I suspect most of these guys will never end up using it but will eventually have to replace it as most extinguishers have a certain shelf life before needing replacement.
I love how people feel the need to justify having one rather than just saying they want one for whatever reason. It's like the guys that have the permanent tow hook in front or the weird off center license bracket holder...
That's a problem with home extinguishers too, most people never replace them. I didn't spell it out, but that's why I'm pissed that the factory option is such a PITA to replace.
I really don't get your take on this whole subject. This isn't something like a roll cage in a car that will never see the track or other such things.
Car fires happen and they go from "Do I smell smoke" to "Holy
" exceptionally fast.
I didn't buy it cause I thought it would be cool. I bought it because I know how lucky I was to have my wife behind me to call and tell me the Escape was smoking. If she weren't then I wouldn't have known until it was much too late and it's probable that I would have been seriously hurt.
I never want to use the thing on my car or anyone else's, but it's one of those things you're much better off having and not needing than needing and not having.
If you don't feel the need to have one in your car, that's fine. I don't get deriding people that do feel it is worth having though (unless they are talking about how they still have their factory bottle in their 996, but that is more to your latest point rather than having one at all).
I don't get this whole thread myself as these same people by the same logic should also be carrying fire extinguishers in all their cars, and not just Porsches.
$hit also happens(especially after eating Chipotle Burrito Bowl) but you don't see any of us carry an extra set of underwear or depends in the glovebox.
Either way, I don't have any beef and I'm just expressing my own opinion. Different strokes for different folks.
I get that and I'm guilty of it myself (Cayenne is the only car with one), but that is mainly out of laziness rather than thinking it's somehow special.
I have looked at putting one in the 996 (would be the one that is the subject of this thread) and the BMW. I just keep getting distracted and haven't gotten around to it...
I've always had an extinguisher in my 911s, and am getting ready to install one in my classic Mini Cooper.
In the Porsche I use the Rennline holder in front of the passenger seat. I never had anyone complain or bump it. I will mount the Mini unit on the roll cage.
I carry them in all my cars (trunk, or behind the seat in my f250) and I've had to use them at least 6 times in the last 20yrs that I think of. Never on my own stuff though, thank goodness. It's a 100% safety item, and I'm not sure why anyone would give anyone else grief for carrying one.
Do you carry roadside flare's or emergency triangle too?
I would imagine those would be used more as statistically, you have a better chance of getting a flat tire on the side of a dark road then your car catching on fire. The people that carry fire extinguishers should also be carrying flares and/or emergency triangles along with a first aid kit. What good does it do if you come across a fire and pull the person out but can't treat them if you don't have a first aid kit, then only to be hit by a non-alert driver while you wait on the side of the road away from the burning car?
This can go on and on. Different strokes for different folks is the bottom line here.
This is the most ridiculous argument I have ever heard (besides listening to Trump) over an item someone chooses to carry in their car.
But as the saying goes, "opinions are like a**holes...."
Let's start a thread on the risk/benefits of changing from amber to clear turn signals and their efficacy if they are ever illuminated. 😜
My take on this thread is in line with what you wrote above. I'm not sure why anyone who very is concerned about a fire event would ask the question...just add an extinguisher and sleep better.
I have one small extinguisher on the floor in front of driver's seat.
As for the type, I prefer more pricey halon/halotron extinguisher, which doesn't leave too much mess.
You shouldn't be cheap on safety, but any of these will do the trick:
http://carfireexperts.com/car-fire-extinguisher/
If you've ever had an engine bay fire you know why you want an extinguisher handy, BTDT. Fuel line cracked and went whoosh on my DD back in the early 80's. Probably should have let it burn and dealt with the insurance company but I was young and dumb. Got it out by smothering it. Started carrying a F/E in every car. Used to carry flares and first-aid kit as well. Don't carry flares but all our cars have F/E, F/A kit, LED flashlight and tire pressure gauge.
I have the Rennline unit in my car. I mounted it under the driver's seat, not the passenger, for a variety of reasons:
1) When I take the car to the track, the passenger footwell is valuable cargo space that I use for a large waterproof case with some of my tools/equipment.
2) If I need it, I think it will be easier to get the extinguisher from my own seat, rather than having to reach across the car and get it.
3) This is especially true if there is a passenger in the car, then I have to get them to get the hell out of the way, or help me get the extinguisher out. Could cost valuable seconds.
4) The car is a little more inviting for passengers if they don't have to think about a fire constantly
There is no interference with my legs, and getting in and out of the car is only about 5% more difficult. I barely think about it anymore. I did mount it with the nozzle to the right, since that end is a little bulkier and would be more in the way of ingress/egress.
I'm sure not everybody would like this setup, but for me it makes the most sense.
I manufacture the ideal extinguisher bracket for Porsche 996, 997, and now 991.
Fits into the rear seat belt buckles, and is easy to install and remove instantly.
No holes, no destructive fasteners required.
We have one of the Genuine Porsche units with bracketry in stock, it is a bit spendy but looks nice,
https://rennpart.com/product/fire-ex...-retrofit-kit/
Fire extinguishers are often required for the track and a good idea to have on the street. Here is a little eye candy into how ours are made...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkmHPootzrE
No offense but that eliminates the use of both back seats for humans, reduces the use of the back seats for cargo, would be harder to get out quickly in an emergency than something mounted in the front seat area, and a lot of people who are tracking their cars have probably removed the rear seatbelts.
Good to have more than one option available out there though!
Ugh, you've added significant weight at the worst possible location. This is not a practical modification. This will also significantly effect the aerodynamics of the car and create front end lift. However, if you update your fender liners to GT2 spec, that will compensate and create perfect aero balance.
Many years ago, my wife drove a Volvo 245 wagon 12 miles on the freeway, commuting between our home and her job in Pasadena. We kept an extinguisher in the back, along with a pair of leather gloves that would allow you to open a hood release that was 200+ degrees from an underhood fire. It was a nice Halon extinguisher.
She never needed it, but the guy in a burning Ferrari was overjoyed when she followed his smoldering 308 to the freeway shoulder and gave the kit to him while coming home one afternoon.
Sometimes the safety gear or spare quart of oil you keep in your car is not for your immediate benefit.
In Euro land it is not compulsory for visitors to carry a F-Ex but highly recommended and is compulsory if you are resident in those same countries (Such as Belgium). In addition things like bulb kits, warning triangle hi viz vest for all in the car. The vest needs to be to hand and not in the frunk (If not you can get a fine) Insurance and ownership docs need to be carried. Radar detectors are banned and you need a country sticker. I like the under seat bracket and the rear belt fixing one. O-Sr
I just bought one from walmart for my car. Now to figure out how to mount it.. I bought the hard top for my Boxster from a lady who's Boxster burned... I would rather my 911 not burn if I can help it. Maybe in 5 years time I wont mind as much, but not right after I have just completely changed all the wear items on my car...
I don't own and have not used one of these, so I can't comment from first-hand experience, but Element fire extinguishers seem amazing and solve a lot of problems with traditional fire extinguishers ->
