If I thought I could remove it with out leaving a mark on the paint, I would replace with a "Carrerra 4" badge.

Also you need to hand in your man card if you can't park that Porsche without using those string parking aids.

For those that weren't already cringing, might as well head over to YouTube and see how people do this in their garages using a wooden Louisville Slugger baseball bat.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Didn't help his singing any but I guess he liked the look.
I just rolled my fenders to make room for larger tires. I notice that the lip on the early 996's where double sheet metal thick. That is probably where the inner fender is mated to the outer fender.
As I rolled the fender, I heard a spot weld pop. I rolled the lip in to a u-shape.
What I noticed the edge of the inner fender lip is slightly exposed from rolling.
Attachment 929796
The pic is not clear. However, the black on the top is the outer fender lip and the white/silver in the middle is the inner fender protruding out.
As a result, there is not paint in the newly expose edge where the two panels shifted. Since panels are galvanized, should I be concerned about rust?
If so, how should I protect the metal.
Is there any earthly mechanical reason to bend the body of your car so that you can squeeze a tire that is normally too large for your car, onto it? I mean where does this end up..."BigFoot" Porsches?
The factory designed and built the car so that it is capable of doing 170+ mph dead stock out of the box on 17" rims. What are you trying to accomplish that will improve on that? The damage you have done to the body is no different than if you had an accident and the repair was second rate.
A girl once told me about walking into a famous singer's dressing room and finding him stuffing sweat socks into his underwear before he went on stage. Didn't help his singing any but I guess he liked the look. That is what this obsession with big wheels reminds me of.
Use some high quality marine or automotive gasket silicone and cut the end of the squeeze tube at the very tip so that the hole is small, like 1/16". Point it in between the separated metal panels and squeeze and drag it along the seam to (hopefully) fill. Sort of a pressure fill type thing. I wouldn't worry too much about the structural loss of a few spot welds.
John, Nice pic, you look a lot like your dad!
Cheers,
Paul - Vintage Prep!
Get us a better picture. That is awful.
You can hit the bare metal with some spray paint or touch up paint. While the metal is galvanized, paint offers protection to the bare metal.
A popped spot weld between the rolled fenders will have zero effect on your car.
I have to agree wholeheartedly with the comments of John Ireland. WHY WHY WHY. I think a large dick should be in there somewhere.
Oh Lord give me strength.
You have to be the minus side of 25years of age to be making moves like those.
Actually there is a factory 996 update sent to all dealerships that specifies the exact procedure of bending and precisely where to CUT the metal flange near the bumper to fender interface that is the first area to rub on the rear. Specifically written for owners who want to fit slightly larger than stock wheels.
I easily understand the desire to customize for many different reasons and I'm on the plus side of seventy. Everybody has different tastes, to some its unforgivable to alter anything stock. To others stock in no way means its the best. I like the way the body looks and I like the 18 inch wheels, John seems to like the 17inch wheels, the OP likes bigger so he modified the car to fit, I say good, its his car and he should make it the way he likes it. The answer to WHY, WHY, WHY, is because he likes it, my question is WHY NOT?
Nothing lasts forever, and more power to someone if they want to change things up, keep it stock, or drive it off a jump. It's their car, and who are we to tell anyone what to do with their stuff? I'm not at all saying we have to like what's done, just that they have a right to do it.
Besides, 10-15 years ago, the technology for bigger and wider tires was at its infancy, so manufactures used what was reasonable. Now, bigger tires and wheels are the trend, and car manufactures are putting much larger shoes on.
Actually, I am 50. But that is how the car came and I like the look and how it performs. So, I just trying to tweak to avoid potential problems. The car only bumps when hitting a dip at speed; so not that often and good tires are expensive.
So you never grew up!
=P
I'm with someone who suggested plugging the gap with something. Could even do it with that bodywork epoxy stuff, athough I doubt anything more is needed than preventing crud from getting in there.
Or merely be on coilovers/tophats with wider wheels and fatter tires for better handling characteristics. It is really nice not having the floaty front end and being able to put the power down earlier through a turn without fear of a loss of traction.
I'll take the large dik mods over a factory set up.
i love how most are asking the OP why he would do such a horrendous thing instead of giving him an answer....I would cover just cover up the unpainted portion with some touchup paint.
It was a PITA to roll mine...my wooden bat got banged up a little but sure does look good with wider tires now
My fenders are rolled too and got 295s back there.
What? You mean people won't assume I have a real big d*ck bc I have huge tires ??
all that wasted money
Ah, yes. For those that weren't already cringing, might as well head over to YouTube and see how people do this in their garages using a wooden Louisville Slugger baseball bat. Personally, I think I spent too much childhood time staring at Porsche pictures on my walls to work up the nerve to take a baseball bat to my rear fenders, but to each his own.
I do know that the instant a car seller points out how he rolled the fenders at home, that's when I walk away.
Award for best understatement.
I say, roll away if you want to. Don't worry about the popped weld, put some rust inhibitor and touch up paint on any exposed metal, and stuff the biggest baddest rubber you can fit in there.
.
Just because it's not your style doesn't mean it's some obscure, vulgar "big foot" porsche. Have you ever considered that not everyone who buys a 911 intends to take it to 170 mph, and that some people buy it for the aesthetics?
Is it me or does the "911" seem mounted too high?
Also you need to hand in your man card if you can't park that Porsche without using those string parking aids.
Otherwise nice fat dollar bill lip you got back there.
The 911 was there before the wing. I was concerned that removing and trying to move it would leave a mark.
I want the cars as close to the doors as possible so I have space in front where the workbench is... Thought about an infrared system...
Those of you who hate it should rejoice - if he's ruined his 911 as you claim, the resale market just lost one more competitor.
Now, STFU and get back to your early-bird specials...Murder She Wrote starts soon.
The TSB for rolling the fenders in 6/11 4440 - Approved Summer Tires, Wheels and Spacers. I found it as a member of Renn Tech. Not sure if there is a free copy on line.
They actually talk about cutting and grinding to do it in the TSB so I would not worry about a few popped welds.
I would get the laser parking assist that is made by Chamberlain/Liftmaster. I got it for the side of the garage where my wife parks her MB wagon. If you're too far forward, the door into the house will bang into the front bumper. If you're too far back, the rear hatch will hit the closed rollup garage door. With the laser assist, you get the car to within an inch of where you want it every time. I have the laser aimed at the back of the front dash speaker where you can easily see the red beam.
Installation is only 2 wires running to the garage door opener.
OP has done that and even used hot pink string for better visibility and hooked it onto what looks to be styrofoam or ping pong *****. You can see it on the second page. Not really sure why he has two though...
This is a rough group, now when you park its possible to be torn to sheds. I am taking down my string and ball and from now on I will just wait till the workbench tips over before I make a complete stop.
Dammit, I just found this thread.
Is it too late to make fun of JI and Hurdi?
OP - you can roll your damn fenders if you want, but just stay off their lawns, you young 50 yr old punk!!
Ok, back to the real issue at hand. I took the wheel off and took some better pics.

I ended up putting a bead of marine grade clear silicone to seal it up.
Different strokes for different folks but one thing that stands out is the high placement of the "911" badge for me. It seems slightly out of place up there...
