Suggestion

If it was me, I'd just grind the standoff down as much as necessary to grab the broken screw with a pair of vise-grips and back it out, then drill through the standoff, use a nylock nut and flat washer on the back side, and a small section of aluminum tube to replace the missing section of standoff.

Suggestion

My suggestion was based on what I would do....I would Dremel cut the head off, punch it through (the whole thing) and replace with a SS bolt/nut with some rubber or nylon washers.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

how do I fix this? tried using a soldering iron to try and melt the bolt out. that doesn't work. drilling it out is even harder as the bit keeps sliding off and into the plastic. I'm at the point where I may just cut the whole mounting **** off and re-mold new mounting ***** with JB weld or something... any suggestions? 20150803_190400_zpstb7lyqae.jpg

POST 2Original post

Why not replace with a SS bolt and nut, with maybe a nylon or rubber spacer? My local Ace Hardware is where I would head.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

not sure I get your suggestion. my issue is the screws are stuck in the hole with no way of getting them out. I can't put anything new there until the old comes out.

POST 4Original post

[QUOTE=AWDGuy; I'm at the point where I may just cut the whole mounting **** off and re-mold new mounting ***** with JB weld or something... [/QUOTE] Don't cut those off. Getting anything to adhere well enough will be challenging. Try drilling the center of the screws & use a removal tool. Failing that, drill it all out, re-tap it or use self-tapping screws. GLWR

If it was me, I'd just grind the standoff down as much as necessary to grab the broken screw with a pair of vise-grips and back it out, then drill through the standoff, use a nylock nut and flat washer on the back side, and a small section of aluminum tube to replace the missing section of standoff.

POST 6Original post

I know you said drilling them out is difficult, but have you tried a left-handed drill bit? They work wonders for removing tough-to-get-out screws. Maybe use a dremel to grind a flat onto the broken screw first. Left hand drill bit

Sorry bout that. Appears you want to keep the plastic insert. My suggestion was based on what I would do....I would Dremel cut the head off, punch it through (the whole thing) and replace with a SS bolt/nut with some rubber or nylon washers. You might even be able to find a grommet the same size to put back in the hole.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yes, I've tried drilling it out, the bit gets into the screw but jumps into the plastic as the screw is not thick enough. the screw I did drill looks like a half moon now if you look at it straight on. because of that, no extractor or left hand bit fits. tried cutting around it and clamping on vice grips. no go. I'm just going to cut it all off and re-mold new inserts. good thing there's still 1 good mounting bracket.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

and I don't think this is something I can go all the way through unless I need vent holes in the end tanks. and I don't. ha!

POST 11Original post

Can you cut off that rubber piece on top and hit it with pb blaster or something like that? Then back the nut out with vise grips?

POST 12Original post

Hmmm...what you do is center punch the screw, then use the smallest drill bit you can find. You would have to start with a drill bit that is about 1/4 the size of the screw. With patience and a bit of progression on the drill bit size you can get it out. Good luck!
