Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Do you check with him about what brand of TP to use before you wipe your ***?

I don't drive it hard, don't track it, so I'm pretty sure and confidant any oil will help the car, let alone one that is recommended for the car.

Have them drain the oil and replace it with a Jake Raby recommended oil.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well I have officially completed my 2nd oil change since purchasing my 1999 C2 in January. It has 96,000 miles on the clock now and seems as healthy as I could expect. I did 5,000 miles on this last oil change with 0w-40 Mobil 1. The oil came out a dark Carmel color. I filtered it on the way into the oil catch container with an automotive paint filter cone and caught no particulates. I also have a magnetic drain plug that was clear of any small or large ferrous metal particles. There was a dark concentrated oily film on the magnet. But the film was so fine it felt slimy not grainy so I imagine this is normal microscopic iron deposits.
I autopsied the filter and it was clean and clear. I plan to upgrade to a spin on/adapter next oil change regardless. Overall I am very pleased with my results, i feel my engine is on a healthy path and should be ready to hit the track next season. (I was breaking it in this year making sure it would hold up to the punishment.)
Unfortunately due to availability I had to use Castrol Edge 0w-40 synthetic this oil change which is an approved oil. I don't imagine this will have much affect.
Happy Motoring and I hope your oil changes are as encouraging and confidence building as mine have been regarding the strength and health of your motors!
Sensing the sarcasm.. Trying to build confidence in ownership instead of the fear mongering I see here all day long...
I will keep my positivity to myself.
Apparently you didn't do much oil thread reading because your still using 0-40 oil in the summer. Sorry bruh, but you really should do some checking before you waste your money on crap oil.
In other words, RRTEC, you need to flatbed the car to your local shop immediately. Have them drain the oil and replace it with a Jake Raby recommended oil. In fact, it may already be too late - you may just want to schedule an engine rebuild with Jake now. Whatever you do, DO NOT drive the car as is, in its current state as you will clearly wreak more internal engine havoc.
I did my research. This oil change will be making it through the winter so would not be wise to put a heavier weight oil in.
I wasn't celebrating just an oil change, as much as feeling confident that the car will be ready to hit the track hard next season. I also upgraded my transmission mount during this service.
If you need someone to beat on it can be me. But it's not my fault these cars have a bad reputation, and I was simply trying to encourage people with good news instead of "boo hoo I found metal" or "is my head blown" or "sludge in my oil fill" or "should I risk it" or "is my engine a time bomb, I heard a minor squeak"....
I'll leave you to your constant engine rebuilds @ 35k miles each time oil drops hit your garage floors. And will wallow in my stupid Porsche recommended oil weight choice for my oil change.
C'mon now bro. We know you didn't and its too late for a cover story. Just make it right next time which you should be way before winter temps hit.
Everything you need to know about 996 ownership has been posted in a thread here somewhere. Everything you need to know about M96 oil has been posted by JR.
I decided to fill in the air gaps in the mount with urethane. Lots of the TT guys seem to do it to stiffen and increase useful life. I used the 3M window weld product.
I'm going at a little over a 1000 miles a month so far. Mobile 1 is easy, says European on the label, and I'm fine with that. I don't drive it hard, don't track it, so I'm pretty sure and confidant any oil will help the car, let alone one that is recommended for the car.
Speaking of oil changes, I just did one on my Jeep XJ with 190,000 which was a first for doing it myself. The plug shoots oil out at an angle and it's hard to line up the pan and keep it lined up, and my god, the oil filter is in a really awkward place to get it. Our 911's, are a cake walk really.
Thanks for posting RRTech! I'm a newbie to the world of Porsche and 996s, sometimes feels like tap dancing in a minefield reading around here.
I too just finished my first oil change. Only had the car a month but already racked up 6000+ miles...and LOVING every minute! I too went with Castrol Edge 0W40. It was on sale, and on the approved list, so sounded good to me. If anything I'd say it's a little quieter, but this could be just new and fresh oil combined with imagination
I'm torn. On one hand the car shifts better, no trans slop. But dear God the car is VERY noisy. All the driveline vibration makes it into the cabin. It's nearly unbearable. I've had solid mounts on cars before and this mod feels like that.
My civilized car was thrust into track day status drive quality
