Reported cause
The issue is the hose needs to be retained so it wont hit the belt.
Leading evidence: 'hose needs' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'hose needs' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean maf, the throttle body' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Took out the MAF and cleaned it and set it aside, no problem.

So, my ego says that the problem was not me, but was that the plastic had deteriorated to a point where it needed to be replaced anyway.

Went to lift up the oil fill line on top of the air filter container and literally just touched another line that goes over it with hardly any pressure at all.

Take that same savings of $1.4M over 100 components and you're talking real money to save the company or use the budget to get better pistons, cranks, et al.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Why can't someone make a hose that combines #14 and #20, problem solved...
Hello, I decided to start working on my 1999 996 myself after having some success working on my 1961 356B Super 90. Today, I decided to clean the MAF, the throttle body and change the air filter because the idle is a little rocky. Took out the MAF and cleaned it and set it aside, no problem. Got access to the throttle body opening, no problem. Actually looks pretty clean. So far, so good.
Went to lift up the oil fill line on top of the air filter container and literally just touched another line that goes over it with hardly any pressure at all. That line pops off and hot, pressurized liquid starts going everywhere; holy crap, what just happened!
Can someone tell me what I just did and how to fix it? I'm attaching a couple of pictures but the end that popped off doesn't seem to want to pop back on the fitting.
Many thanks,
Alan
This shows the exposed fitting.
The shows where the line started before I accidentally popped it off.
This happens to nearly everyone eventually. There are aftermarket replacements that are solid metal, one piece. Alternatively, you can pick up a barbed fitting from the auto parts or hardware store, which you can mount in the remaining bracket by boring it out to accept the barb fitting (5/16 or 3/8 IIRC). GLWR.
Thanks, I've been looking around online trying to figure out what this is and waiting for someone to throw me a lifeline. Is this a power steering hose?
Its a small coolant hose, the spewing liquid is anti-freeze. Just as Mark I above stated, this happens to almost everyone. I did exactly as Mark I suggested, got hold of a barbed fitting, Drilled out what remained of the broken plastic bracket to accept the barbed fitting, secured the barbed fitting to the plastic bracket with a wire tie, attached the two small coolant hoses to the barbed fitting with screw clamps, topped up the coolant and, voila, no corpse no foul. You could look it up.
The issue is the hose needs to be retained so it wont hit the belt. I guess they figured if the made it a rigid connection it would be secured as opposed to zip-tie retainer that may be cut and not reattached.
After 2+ years of ownership and working on my car, I thought this would never happen to me. Hah! Just yesterday I was trying to make some vacuum measurements and I broke this piece. As I was removing the part from the lower hose and the barb left in the upper hose, the plastic came to pieces. I can't believe the original plastic was this fragile. So, my ego says that the problem was not me, but was that the plastic had deteriorated to a point where it needed to be replaced anyway. Go ego!
Please do not buy another plastic connector. I went through multiple connectors and barbed connections with clamps. I got this. This is the SOLUTION forever:
Thanks to everyone for your help. I did the barbed fitting fix a couple of days ago and have been driving it and so far no leaks. I've ordered the metal version just so it looks more stock but this appears to work very well.
I'm amazed at how easily that fitting cracked apart initially; when I tried to pull the fitting from the other hose it snapped off on that end too. WTH! I can't believe Porsche used such a flimsy part.

These engines (and cars) were developed with strict budgetary constraints due to Porsche's poor financial position at the time...this part was likely $2.00 F.O.B. vs. $10.00 F.O.B for a metal part. $8.00 x
