Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There are about 6 different factory sway bars and a previous owner may have swapped on in.
Leading evidence: 'Replace on in' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check diameter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
U should be able to read the part number off the old bushing and double check the diameter.

Suggestion
I would change the end links as well as the bushing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Tired of paying this mechanic $150 @ hour and heard this was easy, what do I need at home to change out the sway bar bushings in a 99 Carrera?
I ordered the replacements at Rock Auto.
A jack and a 15mm socket (i think). Pretty simple repair, u dont even need to disco the links. Hopefully u got the correct bushings. U should be able to read the part number off the old bushing and double check the diameter. There are about 6 different factory sway bars and a previous owner may have swapped on in.
The bar rotates in the bushing so whatever is easiest. There are three different diameters listed so make sure to measure your's first. The end links are only $30-$40 each. If you don't know the age couldn't hurt to replace those also.
The front sway bar bushings are slightly more difficult than the rear. The rears are a breeze. I would rate the difficult a 2 out of 10. Stupid easy. I would change the end links as well as the bushing.
Super easy and I did mine during an oil change. I'm all for having a relationship with a local shop but some stuff is just way too easy and I'm inpatient hah! There are some youtube vids that go over this too probably.
So I am piecing together that you simply loosen the bolts and remove the old bushings? The suspension isn't going to unload on me? Is it done with the jack supporting the axle?
Like is said. Lift car, off the lift points. Remove 4 bolts, 2 per bushing retainer. Remove and replace bushing. Put retainer back on. If u want to replace the links as others suggested u have to pull the tires. They r sometimes difficult to remove because they r a tappered bolt. Trw makes oem quality replacements. If i had to guess i would bet the links r more of an issue then the bushings.
U r way overthinking this and i know u want to save $150/hr but wrenching may not be your cup of tea.
If u do try we r here to help.
As De Jeeper stated, the suspension is unloaded when the car is on jack stands. Think of the sway bar as a spring. You want the suspension unloaded to unbolt the bar or else the sway bar is under tension.
Many, many years ago I was changing sway bar bushings and links on Dodge Ram 50. I foolishly jacked up only one side. When I removed the bolts for the the sway bar it violently snapped down and missed my head by a few inches. Duh! The bar was under tension because I had one side in the air and the other side on the ground. It's always more fun to learn lessons the hard way!
There is a Tech article at Pelican parts which addresses replacement of the stabilizer bar bushings, and it also recommends application of white lithium grease before installing. The Bentley book says the sway bar bushings are tightened to 17 ft pounds, and the end links if you address those are tightened to 34 ft pounds.
Bravo! Now there is a useful practical reply, thank you very much. The procedure is what I was looking for; but people have told me I have difficulty communicating sometimes.
