Like everyone else, I checked plugs, exhaust, idler pulleys...
Leading evidence: 'Check plugs, exhaust, idler pulleys' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check plugs, exhaust, idler pulleys' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

AOS was renewed along with a lot of other bolt on components.

I had something similar, I used a stethoscope to hear around the engine.

Suggestion
Some engine expert may chime in but my guess is the sounds may change due to various dynamics inside the engine at different rpms.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mines burns no oil, no difference in tailpipe colour but again the noise is almost identical to your clip
Only ticks after engine is warmed up. Ticking seems to go away above 2k rpm. Any idea if this is an exhaust leak, bore scoring, anything else?

I have a similar sound but there is a small exhaust leak I found recently. Pull the mufflers as it's pretty easy and check. If nothing then bore scope it. Easy way if from the plugs, if nothing you'd need to drop the sump to get a better look as scoring starts from the bottom. My understanding is that if you have ticking or piston slap the scoring is advanced enough to be seen from the top but I'm sure there have been plenty cases where it wasn't too.
slowslowcar - Put a mechanic stethoscope probe up to the bottom of each coil pack on engine case. There are some videos on exactly where the target spot is located, but you will know which bore is the culprit if you just get in the ball park. Any UOA data? Sounds just like wildbillys old motor.
I'm sorry to hear you have this tick. I think I have this same exact recording. Also, mine started the same, no ticking until warm. 5K miles later, it ticks all the time. Like everyone else, I checked plugs, exhaust, idler pulleys... My ticking is from cylinders 5 & 6. I'm in the queue for an FSI engine in 6 months or so.
Good luck. I'm hopeful it's your exhaust but not betting on it.
I had something similar, I used a stethoscope to hear around the engine. Traced it down to a bad Catalytic. It would echo all the way to the headers.
Was a good chance to install 200 cell sport cats.
My car makes a noise similar to this, it sometimes does it from cold, it sometimes doesnt do it at all.
My car went for an engine rebuild, when it went into the engine builder there was no noise and after rebuild it had the noise similar to above. The engine builder stated on invoice that the noise is of no concern, engine was rebuilt by a reputable builder here in the uk and there very knowledgable of the M96.
Mines burns no oil, no difference in tailpipe colour but again the noise is almost identical to your clip
Yep sounds similar, engine builder reckoned its a common noise across the M96, I didnt renew my liners I got them re-rounded and strengthened rings fitted to top of the liners, mines is a 3.4 and Im led to believe there not as prone to bore score. Ive had the inspection done on the bores after the run in period and theres nothing to note so still not sure on what the noise is
Yes it was Hartech that carried out the works, when I asked about the noise I was told it was common. My car is high mileage so was told because I renewed some parts and left other it could be that combination that causes the noise. I didnt really push for repair as I was told there was nothing at all to worry about.
My noise is not always there but when it is the tick is like above
It would be very helpful to the Porsche community if you would provide more info; scan your invoice and any other documents from the rebuilder and post those, and make a video of the engine when it is making the sound and when not. With that we might be able to help determine if the builder should be doing warranty repair. Thanks.
Invoice is in office at home but the rebuild consisted of the following.
New Crank shaft & 2006 onwards IMS
New main bearings, big ends & thrust washers.
New piston rings, re using existing pistons & existing liners. Liners were re rounded and support rings fitted to crowns.
New timing chains and guide rails.
Cylinder heads were given a basic overhaul reusing existing tappets & camshafts.
AOS was renewed along with a lot of other bolt on components.
Ill try to upload a video I have on the phone.
I'm new to 996s, and cell phone audio played back over laptop speakers can be deceiving. But it doesn't sound like an exhaust leak. And it sounds an awful lot like the piston slap I had in an old Jeep motor. (Not that a little piston slap ever slowed any 400k mile Jeep 4.0 down!) Scopes are cheap. But you might also hear a lot if get a cheap mechanic's stethoscope. Or put a nail in the end of some vacuum hose and stick the other end in your ear. If one of the cylinders doesn't sound like the others ....

I know that rhythm, and that tone.
Buy the scope used in my 4th Volume of the bore scoring series, and scope the engine through the sump.
I am pretty confident of what you'll find.
He said it's a Hartech engine, not with cylinder replacement but their cylinder rounding procedure and deck reinforcement. Would be educational to see the invoice and scope pictures top and bottom of cylinder wall.
The rebuild was carried out April 2017, the car has done maybe 4K max since it was built. As I say the car came back with this noise and my invoice says its of no concern so I wasnt concerned but after reading lots on here about bore score and the sounds are similar. Anyone know why the noise is not always there, I would have thought it would be audible always at idle
That sounds exactly like mine did at some point during it's scoring progression. Some engine expert may chime in but my guess is the sounds may change due to various dynamics inside the engine at different rpms.
