Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought it interesting, and very straight forward to offer a fixed-price service on IMS. I have no affiliation. It was a direct mail postcard I got. I live about 30 minutes from speedsport in Danbury, CT. The price, $1,895 was offered for any M96 engine. Also on it were a $199 oil change (dealer is $350) and a $249 alignment. All great prices from a highly regarded shop. Good till April it said.

POST 2Original post

I've been meaning to get up there to have mine get a once over. Does that special replace with stock or is it the LN or other bearing?

POST 3Original post

Porsche does not sell the stock bearing by itself so its one of the aftermarket bearings.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 99 with 117k miles and clean oil analysis. I am not having it done. By anyone. But if I had a later model I would. The postcard did not have details of parts used.

POST 6Original post

Just curious about the late model comment....no difference afaik????

POST 7Original post

His '99 has a dual row. Later model years had single row which are more prone to failure. Changeover was sometime during MY '00 & '01 - I believe the only way to tell for sure which bearing those cars have is to see the bearing. Someone else may have better info. Or you could hit the "search" button and find a nauseating amount of info on this topic.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 12041356

Okay, I thought that might be what he meant though from the threads I've read, the percentage difference between documented failures of dual row vs. single row are negligible and hardly worth mentioning.

POST 9Original post

The numbers actually show a distinct difference in failure rates, 1% vs 8% IIRC. What I think ahs been established is that this particular bearing, whether single or dual row, is a wear item. It would be prudent to service it each time the clutch needs replacement which seems to fall in the 60-80k mile range for most of these cars. At 117k, I think the IMS is on borrowed time but by then so are the chain tensioners, cylinders, rod bolts and a couple dozen other parts. So do you spend $2k just to lose a rod bolt next week? To each his own but, all of the info is out there to peruse.
