Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Tested for power at the radio/faceplate connection, with ignition key ON, and minimal voltage on any of the legs.
Leading evidence: 'Test power at the radio/faceplate connection' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean contacts made no' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

simple first check: clean all of the terminals on the back of the faceplate and on the body of the unit.

I plan to replace the CR 210, but need to know I'm getting power first.

Getting this unit working would give me sound on a 1,000 mile trip coming up, and I won't be replacing the radio until after I've done the turn signal and rear wing's baffle.

Suggestion
If you're going to replace the unit anyway, then don't spend your time trying to figure out why the radio won't work, but instead, get yourself a wiring diagram of your stereo system and then begin the process of upgrading the system.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There is a 10A fuse on the radio body itself; and that is fine.
There is a fuse in the fusebox, fine as well.
Push the ON button and nothing happens. Does removing the faceplate cause some kind of internal failure?
Does anybody know which probe on the multi-connects is the Power button (yes, I can check them all, but if no power going to the radio, I won't know that as quickly)
I plan to replace the CR 210, but need to know I'm getting power first. Is there another fuse somewhere?
A multimeter is your best friend when trouble shooting a problem like this one. Harbor Freight even gives them away free. If you're going to replace the unit anyway, then don't spend your time trying to figure out why the radio won't work, but instead, get yourself a wiring diagram of your stereo system and then begin the process of upgrading the system.
simple first check: clean all of the terminals on the back of the faceplate and on the body of the unit. these can get dirty and prevent proper operation.
I like this, because even though they're nice and shiny, a poor connection would cause sudden loss of power to the faceplate. Is one of the prongs that the faceplate's prongs tough live with 12V all the time? Seems like a very simple way to test for power coming into the unit.

Cleaning the contacts made no change. Tested for power at the radio/faceplate connection, with ignition key ON, and minimal voltage on any of the legs. My ground was on a door hinge bolt head.
Does anybody know whether they get full-time active power to one of the radio connections if the key is ON? How much voltage are you getting?
My next step will be to test the multi-connect going to the back of the radio, but first steps first.
Oops, cancel the following, you already found that.
May be unlikely, but worth checking... Last time I had a dead radio in a 996, it was a blown fuse in the back of the radio. I can't remember for sure, but I think it was just an ATO fuse, but whatever it was, I had lots of spares in my electrical box.
I had a problem with my cr-210 faceplate going blank. The problem with mine was the plastic tabs that hold it in place were a little worn and the spring was pushing the face plate out far enough that it wasn't making contact. I repositioned the spring where it didn't put pressure in the faceplate and it work after that.
Yes, both fuses are good. Is there a 3rd fuse somewhere? As information, the radio worked, but nothing going to the rear speakers. I fashioned tools to remove the radio (before the real ones arrived) and the radio stopped working. Never touched the multi-connects, it just stopped lighting up the faceplate.
UPDATE; there are two multi-connects at the back of the radio. Black one, bottom row, 3rd one in (next to the empty slot) is hot (12.3V) at all times. That should eliminate car wiring and the primary fuse. Radio-mounted fuse tests good.
Continuity between the lower pin (that connects to the always-hot in the multi-connect) and any of the faceplate ports doesn't read, so are we certain that the fault is a dead radio? What have I neglected to test/try?
I tossed the OEM radio and now have an Alpine unit that works all 4 speakers and has a CD player. Since I can't hear well, that's good enough for me. If anybody wants the old radio, PM me and you can have it for shipping + whatever you care to donate to a shelter of some kind in your town.
