Love the Numeric shifter - one of the very best mods you can do, although even with oem oil (changed last year) can be slightly notchy when cold but that's almost to be expected with most manual sports cars IMO.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just because you can make a shifter unit 95% out of plastic doesnt mean you put it in a Porsche. In a 16 year old car maybe it explains the sloppy feel in rowing to the next gear (although I have no experience with these cars when they were new). My only mark on the measuring stick comparing performance is a 2002 Camaro SS w/ T56 I installed a Pro 5.0 on back several years ago. Two different cars and two different shifters I know but there is no comparison to the Numeric on the 996. Rock solid feel in to every gear. I saw threads I read say reverse was a bit of a chore to get in to...girly men.

POST 2Original post

Congrats. Enjoy. There's no going back once you've driven a 996 with the Numeric.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I have the cables yet to install but will do those at some point later. I hear they make for an even more enjoyable experience once installed.

POST 4Original post

Probably the best mod ever...Hearing all kinds new noises and feelings....love it!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16029891

The cable kit came with the sleeves so hopefully noise is minimized. Just installing the shifter no increased noise so far.

POST 6Original post

Let's see the new unit! I hate my 2nd to 3rd shift, the rest I can live with...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16030407

Unfortunately no pics of the new unit in or out of the vehicle. One of those endeavors taken on later in the evening and took longer than it should have since it was my first time removing the console. The Numeric shifter self centers itself immediately once out of gear making the 2-3 shift effortless.

POST 8Original post

I like the noises, after a couple of weeks i changed my transmission oil to Motul. With the numeric it feels very clunky and heavy for about 5 miles until the car warms up a bit. If someone on here is considering the numeric I would recommend the oem gear oil. The numeric is an incredible modification!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16030560

I had the trans oil changed last month with the OEM stuff when the clutch, IMS and other stuff was done. Even with the OEM trans fluid until it warms up it is a bit notch. After that brief period of time its flawless.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 16029950

If you have dual mass flywheel and use the sleeves you should be good. I have a LWFW and also semi solid motor mounts and it is pretty noisy, the sleeves helped to reduce it, but not eliminate it.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16030822

As far as the clutch and fly wheel goes they were replaced with OEM. I assume that means the fly wheel is dual mass? My motor mounts are OEM also.

POST 12Original post

This is mine from awhile ago, not ssgunny's, but should be the same.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16030920

Yes, oem is a LUK dual mass flywheel.

POST 14Original post

I've got Numeric cables on my wish list - will probably buy and install them next month Love the Numeric shifter - one of the very best mods you can do, although even with oem oil (changed last year) can be slightly notchy when cold but that's almost to be expected with most manual sports cars IMO.

POST 15Original post

I have a similar history and same car as you and I was wondering how your mod worked out. I have a B&M style short shift that i installed myself and its pretty cool. I did it because my shifting was not as smooth as it once was. I liked the smoothness of my shifting, however it changed over a period of a few months. On my 2004 996, I changed my flywheel, clutch and IMS in 2019. I am now planing to change my cables because I believe they could just be old. So I am on the fence about getting the OEM cables or going the Numeric. I am doing my homework on both. The Numeric is appealing but I hear a lot of chat about the noise and the notchyness. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks.

POST 16Original post

It's "notchy", but in a good "bolt action rifle" sort of way... Part of the problem with the stock shifter is not only the plastic frame and parts, but the stock shifter handle itself is rubber (I'm sure Porsche did this to reduce vibration, noise etc.) - This deadens the feel as well as making it somewhat "squishy/rubbery". I replaced mine with the Aluminum Function First one - very solid, and it's got a great classic look. I just saw a Rennline one that commemorates the 917 - black with a red stripe... looks really cool, but is probably crazy expensive (like most Rennline parts)... In any case, The Numeric Racing shifter by itself (with stock cables) is a huge improvement. When you add the numeric cables, I'd say it gets another 15-20% better... Good Luck

Glad you are enjoying it! We really appreciate the positive feedback!

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16414075

Some cars do experience some noise from the cables but there are a ton of different variables and there is always a way to get rid of it. For example our cable insulation tubing always helps, sometimes the noise is actually coming from a transmission selector, other times people haven't had their transmission serviced in a while which can create some noise. But you can always give us a call if you experience any noise and we will always find a way to get rid of it. As far as notchyness goes, the only time you may have any of that is when the car first starts and the oil hasnt warmed up yet. Other than that, if its installed properly you will never have that problem. If we can help answer any questions or help at all feel free to give us a call!

POST 19Original post

Super happy with mine. I swiched from an agency power ss. I used the numeric cables with the insulation and have no noise. I have to make sure the cables are not laying on the trans.

POST 20Original post

The Numeric setup is the very best you can get, pull the trigger on it - you won't look back and you'll come back singing its praises! Be mindful of the install I had a really hard time wrestling the rubber grommet back in, use plenty of rubber lubricant and i'd also recommend possibly drilling out some of the rubber as the Numeric cables are thicker than the OEM.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 16414075

I have the Numeric. I haven't ever driven a 996 stock shifter. I have no complaints about the Numeric. seems quite nice!

POST 22Original post

I understand the installation at the shifter end but i found little info about popping off the cables underneath. How hard is it to pop off the OEM cables underneath at the transmission end and how do the numerics go on at the trans end?

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 16415260

Takes a little bit of force to get the OEM cables off but nothing extreme. You can use a large screwdriver and pry them off. Then the Numeric cables come with a yellow plastic one time use cap that you put on each transmission leaver and the end of the cable then goes onto that cap. I'd recommend buying a spare set of caps. I went through a set when getting the adjustment correct. The Numeric racing instructions on their website are quite helpful and detailed. There are also two videos on YouTube demonstrating the adjustment. Keep us posted!
