Used Oil Samples were pulled from both of the cars you referenced before we pulled them apart.
Leading evidence: 'Use oil samples were pulled' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (4.5 months)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I hope to never hear the dreaded ticking sound and already set my oil changes for every 6 months or 5k, doing a UOA with every change.

Even with no symptoms you just don't know what is lurking without setting eyes on the cylinders.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yesterday i watched the last several episodes of Jakes series, specifically the ones comparing the 41k and 42k mile silver and black Carreras suffering from different stages of bore scoring. As was discussed the silver car showed no outward signs and would have fooled even Jake had an invasive scope not been performed. That said, would a UOA of the silver cars recent engine oil have shown something suspicious or was the damage even too early to show up in UOA results?
The entire series is a must watch and was a great educational experience for me. I hope to never hear the dreaded ticking sound and already set my oil changes for every 6 months or 5k, doing a UOA with every change. Though i never plan on selling my 4s, should that change i think a lengthy history of UOA reports will be a plus.
Used Oil Samples were pulled from both of the cars you referenced before we pulled them apart. The samples were sent to two different labs
The engine oil from the black car showed high silicon, and aluminum, and had very high fuel content, and oxidization levels. It was a classic bore scoring case in every way. Both labs showed similar results with this car, but the generic lab said "resample and keep an eye on it"... Yeah, right.. The second lab picked up on the results, and indicated a mechanical failure, even noting how the anti- wear package of the oil was compromised, due to mechanical wear sucking it up.
The oil from the silver car was near perfect from both labs. The generic lab said "resample as necessary, no action needed" and the other lab noted the elevated silicon levels, with increased aluminum, and said this needed to be looked at further. Laughably the generic lab said the silicon came from the air filter, and they did not note that the engine could be losing cylinders. It just needed an air filter (and 25K worth or our wizardry!).
This again confirmed what I've known for years. You can do all the analysis you want, and the results come down to how the lab processes the samples. There's no replacement for a human going invasive to find a problem. Buy a bore scope, and use it even if you don't think you have a problem.
There's no replacement for an actual invasive inspection that is carried out comprehensively with the bore scope from BOTH sides of the cylinder.
The silver car has been finished for a month, and already has 2500 miles on the 4.0 Stage I. The black car's engine is in the mill today, and I'll be assembling it in roughly 3 weeks, on schedule.
No, don't ask me what labs were used.
I think the reality is there isn't much to do except scope it. Even with no symptoms you just don't know what is lurking without setting eyes on the cylinders.
Thanks for the prompt response. Glad to know even the beginnings of the problem can show up in the numbers, if properly analyzed. My 2nd UOA report from SPEEDiagnostix is due any day now and i hope its another non event. Keep up the outstanding work Jake.
My first UOA sample was lost in the mail last Oct. Last week I did a manometer test and could smell fuel (after a fifteen minute drive) when I swapped oil caps. New sample will go out in a couple of days...Stay tuned!
New UOA results hit last night, here are last two reports for comparison:
This is first oil change (4.5 months) after new RMS, IMSB (non solution), clutch, flywheel. 28,500 total miles on 03 4s
2nd oil change at 33,200 miles.
You need to shorten the service intervals. Those oxidation. and viscosity levels are showing very clearly that the service intervals are too long for this oil, this particular engine and the way you drive this car.
Nothing like a little liquid death in the crankcase.
It was never my intention to turn this thread into a discussion on what oil to use, etc...but given Jakes comment on my UOA i have one related question. When i ditch the M1 that was just installed and go with DT40, is it as simple as just doing another oil change? I found an old thread that mentioned an intermediate flush of some kind prior to going from M1 to DT40 for the 1st time. Can someone please comment on this aspect of switching oil.
Thanks.
I switched from M1 to DT40 without an intermediate product and didn't see any problems. I don't know if that is correct or not. I too have read "the oil additive packages don't play nicely with each other" but I'm no tribologist nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so don't take my word.
'
I would do the normal routine of warming the car up on a short drive. Drain the oil until all has left the sump. Add DT40. Drive it for a short time, then flush again. Add DT40 and you're good to up to 5000 miles or 6 months. I usually change my oil in Fall and Spring.
