Update: I installed 2 Alpine SPS-410 speakers in the dash today.

I installed the Tangs, and I'm happy with them, but I needed to use EQ boosting 200z a lot to make the sound fill the 100-200z gap.

Suggestion
My advice would be to replace the rear speakers, also with Alpine SPS-410's, and leave the stock door speakers in place.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Installation wise, the glue solution didn't work, because the rim is less than 1/8 inch, and gravity is working against you, and you have to handle the bejeezus out them during the rest of the install.
I'm swapping out (diy) my stock amp (nokia m490) for this mtx 2300 2-channel amp. Step_1: keeping the stock CDR-220 and stock 6 speakers (non Bose). I'll update how it works out. May need a different amp or speakers, we shall see.
youre going to put a 20+ year old amp on 20+ year old speakers? Granted the 2300 MTX is a righteous amp, but those stock speakers are going to clip and sound horrible...
Honestly, my best suggestion would be to save up some more coin and put in some speakers that can handle the power. 300 bones will get you a good head unit, and another 300 will get you a decent component system.
For $200 I would start by replacing the speakers.
$120 for two of
these
$90 for four of

This will give you the best improvement in sound you can get for $200
Thanks sjg1138 I'll put that info in my arsenal for later. I tend to be amp centric, thanks to my monster Krell amp in my house.
So tonight I discovered my MTX 2300 is not going to work for this project, because I need something quick, and it would need to be repaired. For some reason, it only puts out normal volume when the crossover button is pressed partially in. Otherwise the volume is just too low. And I tried all settings of gain etc. Maybe later I can use it for a subwoofer, but it's not ready for prime time now.
So now I'm looking for a 4-6 channel amp, so I can use all 6 speakers.
Then if that doesn't sound good enough, then I'll buy speakers.
Budget constraints will be moved if necessary.
Perhaps gonna flip flop and go (sjg's) speakers first. Reviews indicate the lightweight nokia m490 can drive them maybe. I also have an old Kenwood HU whilst configuring.
Update: I purchased and installed this Blaupunkt EMA-455 amplifier, and it filled out the sound a little bit, but the stock speakers still sound like the crappy stock speakers.
Alpine SPS-410 speakers on the way (2 for dash). Thanks sjg for that tip.
Will probably order those woofers also. because bass is key in the music I listen to (classic rock) whilst in the car.
Yeah, it's still a work in progress until I get it sounding right, then I'll button it up.
Longer term, I like your idea of component speakers.
You know it's funny, now that I'm working on the stereo, the Stuttgart Symphony never sounded so good.
My advice would be to replace the rear speakers, also with Alpine SPS-410's, and leave the stock door speakers in place. The stock front/rear speakers are pretty crappy, but the stock door woofers are actually pretty good quality. The Tangs do have a lot more bass power for sure, but they aren't that well tuned to the car and door enclosure.
The Tangs are 4ohm vs 2ohm for stock door speakers, so this makes them slightly quieter at the same power level, but the real issue is that the Tang's "sweet spot" is a much lower frequency than the stock woofers, so, without doing special EQ, it leaves a bit of hole in the 100z-200hz region before the front/rear speakers start delivering meaningful bass. I installed the Tangs, and I'm happy with them, but I needed to use EQ boosting 200z a lot to make the sound fill the 100-200z gap. Also, the Tangs can be a bit overpowering for the door enclosure -- for the most part it's fine, but every once in a while a song will come on that causes some rattling because the Tangs are putting out so much more and lower bass than the enclosure was designed for.
I'm happy the the Tangs, but I'd probably leave the stock woofers in place if I had to do it over again -- the stocks aren't as powerful, but they blend better with the rest of the speakers.
I'm sure many will disagree with the above, but that is my experience with them.

Sounds pretty good. Not very loud, so I may add 2 more in the rear. Clarity will take me a couple weeks to review.
Installation wise, the glue solution didn't work, because the rim is less than 1/8 inch, and gravity is working against you, and you have to handle the bejeezus out them during the rest of the install. Zip ties to the rescue. Call me a butcher, but frankly if they start vibrating, then I'm dumping the Alpines and buying something that actually fits. Nothing against Alpine, but plenty against the porsche/nokia manager who approved the proprietary speaker rig.
Crappy amp + Great speakers = Crappy sound...
Great Amp + Crappy Speakers = Crappy sound...
Great Amp + Great speakers (but poorly matched specs - i.e. - power/resistance, crossover points etc.) = Questionable sound...
^^^ In other words, a properly designed system taking into account the volume (LxWxH) of the space (shouldn't need and excessive amount of power to fill this small space - road noise is a separate issue) and how well the components play together is the key to getting good/great sound in this type of listening environment. Just throwing comnponents with "great specs" together is a crap shoot! - May work, but you may be disappointed with something that "should sound great" (based on specs). $ 200 is a ridiculously low budget if you expect reasonably good sound... Good Luck
i find it nostalgic, but Ill probs my only play a couple cassettes per year. I wish I could adapt the Nav input for a Bluetooth or 3.5mm headphone type input. I wont ever use the Nav...
In my experience,, Bose speakers need Current.. A LOT of current, they don't play well with high voltage low current output amps,, (Like most auto amps are.. )
Pretend your working with 16ohm theater style speakers.. Tube level amps
