Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let me preface this with the fact that I haven’t opened the fuse box and inspected my fuses yet. Basically, long story short, I had to jump my 996 as the vehicle was completely dead. After jumping the vehicle the radio would turn on and show radio stations etc but no noise was emitted. Additionally, the cigarette lighter that powers my oh so important radar detector, is no longer outputting power. Now here is where this boggles my mind; upon returning to my home, I utilized a Porsche brand battery maintainer and plugged it into the vehicle via the cigarette lighter. A couple days later, the battery was at full charge but the radio still wouldn’t emit noise and the cigarette lighter still won’t emit power. When the car is on, the orange light that surrounds the cigarette lighter is not lit. If the fuse were blown, wouldn’t the battery maintainer not be able to add power to the battery via the lighter? My local indy suggested pulling the radio out and finding a small fuse behind the radio and removing it and putting it back in (if it’s not blown). I don’t know why there would be power to the face of the radio but no sound if the fuse is bad. I’m certainly no electrician, nor a mechanic, so I'm naturally very confused. Any advice that doesn’t involve me paying my Indy $150 per hour would be great. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Many cars have the radio and cig lighter fuse shared. That is likely your problem.

Checking blown fuses is easy and cheap and highly suspect when jumping off a car. I wouldn't get caught up on what works and what doesn't or this or that. Start check fuses in the box under the driver's side. Then pull the radio and check the fuse there. But more than likely the radio and amp fuse is blown at the box. I have yet to see one blown at the radio level.

POST 4Original post

When you take the little cover off of the fuse box check the back side of the cover itself. There should be a little guide tucked in there that tells you which fuse is which. Pull all the fuses associated with your radio and inspect them. I had a dead battery that caused my radio to turn on and off when I replaced it with a good one. Simply pulling the fuse for a little bit (electrics on, engine off,) and putting it back in actually fixed the thing. I'm not an electrician by any means either so I have no idea why it worked but it worked. Give this a shot!

POST 5Original post

Did you jump from the battery or the jump point in the engine bay?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Today I finally got my 996 back from the shop as it had an intake leak that caused a high idle. I was able to get my radio working by simply replacing the fuse.... thanks guys Now that the intake issue is fixed Im going to try to tackle my electrical gremlins. Heres my issues; 1. horn only works when the car is off - when driving the horn will not make a sound no matter where you press on the steering wheel center. 2. cigarette lighter is not emitting power. today I checked all of my fuses and they were fine (save for the replaced radio fuse). I replaced the cigarette fuse just because why not? when I got to the shop to pick up my vehicle the drivers seat electrics werent working thus preventing me from moving the seat forward. The mechanic quickly got in there, found that the fuse was fine, and then messed with the housing. Said he didnt really do anything and it magically started working again. im really confused as to whats causing all this. Any help or any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

POST 8Original post

From just briefly reading sounds like your alarm unit is playing up. Did the shop try and communicate with your alarm unit and test the functionality? I'd start there, also is this a coupe or cab? Any water damage?

POST 9Original post

Also a warning for others, the jump point is in the engine bay, manual specifically states not to jump from the battery.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17006046

i dont think they did anything with the alarm unit. Come to think of it, Ive never even checked to see if my alarm works. no water damage. I wondering if using the Porsche battery maintainer that plugs into the cigarette lighter is the culprit? But Id think it would blow the fuse if something went awry.

everything looks good as far as I can tell. I may just replace the cigarette lighter housing as it may have failed? Im perplexed by this issue. I cant be speeding around without my radar detector!

If you've narrowed it down to just that and you've checked the fuses I'd just replace it. They aren't expensive and you can update to the non smokers package too. Count yourself lucky, we can't have radar detectors in Aus!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17019940

whats the difference with the housing in the non smokers package can I still plug my radar detector into it?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 17020012

There is a size difference, not too sure. The other difference is it fits the non smokers plug rather than the cig lighter but if you're plugging in a radar I'd swap like for like

I guess I get to be the old guy here: I've been driving around without a radar detector for 40 years! Never got a ticket. The only time I tried to use one was on a run from Boston to Chicago. Got a ticket on I-90 in the middle of Ohio somewhere.
