Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious if anyone here has attempted to complete this swap. I have a few questions. I am not concerned with opinions on whether it should be done or not, especially from people without experience. I am hoping to speak to someone who has either attempted it or completed it. PM me if you prefer. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Prelude, there was a guy on here, guessing ~5 years ago that did it. I seem to recall he was successful a gave significant info about it. I think he was from Latvia. A search might scare up the thread. Good Luck with the project.

POST 3Original post

I would certainly do this if I had a donor car , but with all the parts needed to do the swap sourced individually it would certainly not be cost effective IMO. Everything from gauge cluster to shifter, clutch pedal, clutch master and reservoir, line to rear, clutch slave , flywheel, clutch, transmission, shifter cables, and of course there is different wiring harnesses and ecu programming for each car. Doing the swap and getting the car to run and doing it like the factory did it are miles apart in effort and dollars.

You must have missed the opinion part of the post...

POST 5Original post

Someone in Australia did it. Cab tip to manual.

POST 6Original post

Yes I did should have stayed out. I have priced it out and each time came to the conclusion that it would be time consuming and costly. This isnt my opinion but fact. Anything can be done, and I have completed this many times on other cars. I looked into it when I did the LS1 swap on my wifes 2003 auto convertible. The conclusion I came to was that the cost and time wasnt worth it., so I used the 722.6 transmission. The next 996 LS swap car I did I bought a 6 speed car. If money and time arent concerns then its a bolt on procedure with all parts available new and used, A donor car of the same year would certainly be a great time and possibly money saver.

He's not going to get any positive responses. Everyone thinks it's a bad idea except the one guy who said he was going to do it.

????? There is a TON of great information in that post. It's a comprehensive list of everything that needs to be changed, including several items most of us (who have not deeply contemplated the change) would not have thought of. The only "opinion" is suggesting what is actually the only financially viable means to do the job -- get a donor manual car and sell the Tiptronic parts to stay roughly even on costs. It would be a financial bloodbath to buy all the parts. He obviously did a lot of work to figure out the parts needed, and to determine the only practical way to fund them. Sorry he doesn't have a "how to" video on how to do the job, maybe the mods can ban him . Thanks for posting!

POST 10Original post

There was an article in a Total 911 issue from a couple of years ago about a guy in Singapore (I think) who did an auto to manual conversion on a 997 in his apartment building parking lot. It wasn't a step-by-step guide but it had a list of all the bits required. The magazine is at work and I won't be able to get it for a couple of days, but I can scan the article if you're interested. Edit - This issue:

POST 11Original post

My mechanic did it for me in 2017: For me it was an economical good option considering all the goodies I already had on my car and I knew what I got. I think there are some posts about it here on Rennlist. I can give you the shopping list I got from my mechanic to do the work. Technically I do not know all the quirks. The shopping list: - A96.01 transmission and mount - drive shafts - schifting cables and schifting unit - clutch and flywheel - shifter and booth - central console - clutch cilinder - gauge cluster - pedal cluster - some coolant hoses and tubing - brake fluid reservoir - free-run pulley for alternator - reverse light switch wiring harness and connector - some other small bits I forgot It needs reprogramming of ECU etc to manual car. My mechanic charged me 2 full days of labour. Probably it was a bit more like 22-24hrs in total. (Here labour hours are not that expensive as in the US) He did already the conversion once before so he could get up to speed with it. Finding the right connector for the reverse light switch became one of the most difficult things. In my case it was the same as used on a Saab. see https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l-gearbox.html The parts you swap out can make up for 1/2 -2/3rds of the costs of the shopping list above. Depending on how cheap you can find all the parts.

POST 12Original post

I investigated this also, on a 996 Turbo however. I came to the conclusion that it is not cost effective for a Turbo because the Turbo 6-speed gearbox is upwards of $10k alone. There are no Turbo "rollers" because the engine won't die so the route of finding a donor car just won't work, unless one can find a wreck cheap. But even wrecked they are not cheap. So my Tiptronic 996 Turbo stays Tiptronic and when I need to row the gears I drive my 6-speed Turbo. I think that it would be possible, and even could be profitable (!) on a NA 996 if one could find a manual trans roller to scavenge all the needed parts, then part out the rest of the roller.

POST 13Original post

About the sense of it all depends on the car you have right now. As the engine is the most important part where you might have invested in it would make more sense to find a good roller and transplant the engine. In my case I made a lot of changes to the suspension and engine. Some weight savings. So finding another car was less an option for me. My mechanic was also enthousiastIc about it so his enthusiasm convinced me. I just took the plunge to make the swap when I found the transmission for such a steal. The rest is 30.000 miles history already.

Thank you for the constructive posts from those who contributed. Also, locating and buying the swap parts are not a concern for me, that's why I wanted to focus on the labor only. Very good info! Thanks! If possible, can you ask if he had to cut the chassis at all? I am hoping it will be a somewhat simple swap like a BMW E36 or E46. Hoping that the shifter location is already setup for a manual shifter install as well.

POST 16Original post

Nope... it is all pretty straightforward mechanically

Prelude Guy - If you care contemplating the swap. I am just about to start a part out of a 99 Manual with a manual transmission. Only 43K miles on the car.

POST 19Original post

I think you already got the information you wanted, but here's that article anyway. It's obviously for 997 but should be pretty similar for 996.

Have you parted out the 99 yet? I would be interested in the cost of the parts needed to convert from Tip to 6 Spd.
