Suggestion

to diagnose, perhaps try unplugging the mass airflow sensor and see if the car changes behavior; that will help determine if it needs changing (i don't recommend cleaning as i've not had any luck with cleaning these sensors).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everybody, last week I decided that the 997 needs an older brother. So, I bought a 996 C2 Manual with the cool cable throttle, I would also like to mention that it is a beautiful spec, incl. M030, sport suspension and seats, LSD, 996 turbo wheels etc. So, I am excited to say the least. BUT. I noticed a throttle hesitation issue. When I say accelerate by pressing the pedal up to 80% all is fine. But quite frequently when I give it the full beans it stutters and hesitates. At 4,000 RPM and above. As an example, when I accelerate on 2nd gear up to 7,000 RPM at 50% percent and then shift to third and press the accelerator to 100% it jolts and stutters and I feel as if not only I pressed the throttle at 80% but rather 40%. It seems like a fuel delivery issue. Would anybody know how to solve this or where it is coming from? Many thanks, Bob

POST 2Original post

could be a lot of things; fuel filter (crud in the fuel filter that stirs up at high flow) dying fuel pump, some bad fuel trims, bad mass airflow sensor, failing throttle position sensor, resonance tube not working properly. sounds a bit like liimp mode behaviour, but you should have a cel in that case. to diagnose, perhaps try unplugging the mass airflow sensor and see if the car changes behavior; that will help determine if it needs changing (i don't recommend cleaning as i've not had any luck with cleaning these sensors). also, change the fuel filter regardless as it's a new car to you and you might not know the previous maintenance history. you can also reset the ecu to get rid of any old fuel trim data. check the engine to see that all vacuum hoses are connected (especially to resonance flapper). if you have the tools you can measure fuel pressure, otherwise i think next step would be off to someone with the ability to pull codes and engine data. OR ITS THE IMS!!! just joking; i just wanted to beat someone else to it.

hahaha the IMS joke got me ;-). Well I will try the sensor unplug and see what happens tomorrow. Where is it BTW ?

POST 6Original post

I second the fuel filter/fuel pump hypothesis, perhaps maybe even clogged fuel injectors, that's where I would start investigating. By the way, absolutely beautiful car, love the black, reminds me of my soul!

POST 7Original post

I just fixed a very similar symptom on my car by changing the air filter.

POST 8Original post

yeah man, i bet i clogged air filter could be a cause. but if your filter is so clogged it's bogging the engine on your new/used car then you got bigger problems. time go get the microscope out and give the whole car a once-over because you can now assume that NO maintenance has been done.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 16971030

In my case it was because the oiled air filter picked up a ton of dust and sand on the outside. It was not on a 996, it was on my track car.

POST 10Original post

ah, i see; it is clogged with the tears of all those you haved passed. one of the hazards of being so fast!

Thanks! I will check the air filter then as well. Then move on, the ECU was checked and reported no faults. Thanks! Compared to my speed yellow 997 it is a breath of fresh air :-) Man, that would be great if this would be the case!!! It was inspected via PPI at Porsche and yesterday at a indy shop all is great. Honestly the 4 hour PPI revealed some things but nothing bad. Speaking of which, I ordered a BMC filter, do they need to be oiled. Haha to be honest, I have it now 6 days so not much passing was being done, specifically due to the fact that I have 7 year old tires. I intend to put on some Michelin Cross climates on.

POST 12Original post

My cable car had a similar issue but only on cold start where it just didn’t like the gas pedal. After changing the pump and upgrading injectors she has purring like a kitten. The older gen 996 are becoming known with failing injectors. You can’t really even find actual new oem injectors let alone at a reasonable price. I say do a full fuel overhaul and be done with it. Some also have a two way valve in the fuel tank.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the topic has been solved! It was in fact the MAF sensor. The mechanic was kind enough to ask one of his customers to drop by with the same vintage car and we swapped after which the car had as if 100 more horsepower :-D. Thanks for all the help!
