No check engine lights, and last time I checked Durametric numbers (a month ago) they were as follows, and which I thought were fine.
Leading evidence: 'Check durametric numbers (a month ago) they were as follows' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check /' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Sorry I didn't respond to the wire jacket - I doubt chemical degradation (it's chemical & Temperature resistant plastic as it's used on top of the engine).

But starter clean (maybe rebuild) and new wires are also on the list.

So, new UAOS is on the way (thanks Porschetech3!), I have new fuel injectors to replace all around, and I'm replacing the starter wires (it's been hard to start when hot), as well as replacing the fuel filler neck, the idler pulleys, and maybe the alternator.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've posted some, but now... my first thread!
2004 C4S. This winter I'm doing a top of engine refresh. So, new UAOS is on the way (thanks Porschetech3!), I have new fuel injectors to replace all around, and I'm replacing the starter wires (it's been hard to start when hot), as well as replacing the fuel filler neck, the idler pulleys, and maybe the alternator. The car has been running great.
I'm taking things apart now, and once the plenum was off, I could smell fuel. Front plenum was dry, but when I finally got to the back resonator tube, the area is wet.
Hose under resonator tube is wet.
Top of engine is dry, but there is a puddle in the intake. (It could be oil, but is a bit thinner, and smells like fuel.)
It's started to eat into the Starter electric wire.
No check engine lights, and last time I checked Durametric numbers (a month ago) they were as follows, and which I thought were fine.
FRA bank 1: 1.04
RKAT bank 1: 2.34
FRAU bank 1: 1.04

I don't think this would be related, but at idle:
Camshaft position 1 deviation: 2.06
Camshaft position 2 deviation: 0.41
Actual angle for inlet camshaft bank 1: about -0.3 to -0.4
Actual angle for inlet camshaft bank 2: about -0.1 to -0.5
I also have Rough running cylinder data, and all cylinders are within about -1 to +1.
Last oil change was in February (about 1,000 miles ago). Oil level has been flat at where I filled it since then.
Thoughts? Where is it coming from? What, if anything, should be done?
Its probably just oil as there really is no way to get fuel back there. Also the starter wire detioration is probably from contact not chemical. Something is rubbing on the old plastic and it broke. I would consider rebuilding the starter or replacing it while u r in there. Its what fixed my long start issue because the wires were fine.
Well, since the intake plenum is directly connected to the intake runners which are directly connected heads and injectors, it's not surprising that the plenum would smell of fuel (the air and fuel are mixed in the runners just above the intake valves). If the fuel smell is overly strong, it might point to your injectors leaking as well, so it may be a good idea to pull them out and check them for leakage. If your injectors are leaking, it's NOT GOOD - you should change them immediately (this seems to be a major contributor to bore scoring). Generally speaking, new injectors are recommended over re-built/re-manufactured ones. I won't go into all the background here, but if you're interested do a search of the forum - there should be plenty of threads with info. Good luck
Thank you both.
I didn't see any way for fuel or fuel smelling oil to get in there either, at least not as a puddle.
Could be oil from the AOS: Mine's tested good, but a new UAOS should be on its way from Porschetech3 very soon.
Leaking injectors: I have 6 brand new Bosch injectors sitting on my bench ready to go in as part of this work.
I'm pretty sure the wire degradation is chemical, nothing was touching there, and it looks chemically eaten, not abraded. But starter clean (maybe rebuild) and new wires are also on the list.
Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something horrific. Sounds like I'm doing what should be done.
I have a 200k mile motor and it has some blow by. I always have a light film in the intake and its normal for my car. Porchetech3 has a thread for testing the aos and test blow by. Might be worth doing the test and postung to give him a data point.
Also double check the aos cross over tube. They r getting brittle in our cars.
Thanks. I've seen the Blow by thread, and posted my numbers back in May or so. AOS vacuum and Blowby were really good at the time.
I'll finish the maintenance, then measure again.
Sorry I didn't respond to the wire jacket - I doubt chemical degradation (it's chemical & Temperature resistant plastic as it's used on top of the engine). I would say more likely rodent damage (for some reason they love to chew on plastic). Did you happen to find any other signs of critters (droppings/poop, nesting materials, nuts/acorns etc...) ? Also, on the puddle - yes, check/replace the AOS... Good luck again
