Checked oil level on the dipstick and reads just below full.

I plan to fill the old filter and put that back on then try starting it again.

Replaced the drain plug with new washer and tightened.

Just changed the oil on my 99 996 C2 like I have for each of the past 7 years.

Suggestion
If these steps bring no joy, I would then drop the pan to see if the oil pickup and swirl pots are clogged, then I would remove and inspect the oil pump at the front of engine below bank 1 and inspect the oil pum gears and drive pin, which pin is driven by the Intermediate Shaft.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just changed the oil on my 99 996 C2 like I have for each of the past 7 years.
Backed it up on ramps, removed drain plug and let it drain for an hour or so. Removed oil filter (I have the spin on adapter).
I purchase a case of DT40, new washers and the Napa Gold 1042 filter in a package from LN Engineering.
I put the new filter on (I did not pre-fill the filter but I did put oil on the threads and around on the o-ring) Tightened the filter hand tight.
Replaced the drain plug with new washer and tightened. Poured in 8 quarts of DT40.
Started it up and let it idle for about 20 seconds while rolling off the ramps Oil pressure reads below 1 bar and engine is loud - like rattling. Shut it off. Checked and there is no oil leaking. Checked oil level on the dipstick and reads just below full.
Started again, let idle for about 20 seconds and still no pressure and engine still loud. Shut it off.
What should I do now? Afraid to start it again.
I would drain the oil and remove the filter. Refill the oil with a new filter, and fill the new filter like half to two thirds full before installing. You may have gotten a defective/internally damaged filter, odds are a new filter would not be defective. Secondarily, by not filling the filter prior to installation you might have experienced an air lock type situation in your oil system. I know this is unlikely, but offer it as a remote possibility. I always fill my new oil filter to about two thirds full before installing to ensure engine does not experience momentary lack of oiling. Also, check your oil pressure switch at the top of bank 2 (USA passenger's side) to ensure the wires are intact and firmly seated, and if you have a new oil pressure switch now is the time to install it. May be the case that your pin has sheared. Best of luck.
Did the oil bottles have the foil sealer ? I know I have used Driven bottles that had, and some that did not.
If so, I would account for the foil piece for each quart - it has happened where the foil is left attached to the bottle by a thread, became fully dislodged when pouring and can make it's way to the pickup clogging the screen.
Driven should ditch the foil sealer and it looks like they have started to go that route.
I would also remove the filter, if you had pressure, it should be filled with oil, if it is not - I would fully fill it and reinstall.
Thanks for the feedback. No - the oil bottles did no have a foil seal under the cap.
Do I need to drain the oil from the pan to replace the oil filter? I don't believe that I do.
I plan to fill the old filter and put that back on then try starting it again. If that works I'll order another new filter.
If the main oil pressure relief/by-pass valve is stuck open or spring is broken, the oil system will have an extremely hard time priming. I would check that first, takes 5 min. Its located on the bottom of the oil pump in the open.
I removed the new filter and it was empty. I filled the oil filter and reinstalled. Started the engine and in a couple seconds oil pressure was up to almost 5 so all is good.
Sounds like I got a bad filter.
Think I could have done any damage to the engine running it for < 1 minute with no pressure?
I'd also throw another 1/2 qt in there if I were you (total oil capacity for M96 3.4l = 8.75L or 9.25qts.) ... The oil level should be between the hi/low marks on the dipstick and on the electronic gauge. Good luck
Hey Porschetech3 - Thanks for your reply. I read this after I filled the old filter and put that back on fixing my no oil pressure issue.
Question for you - I do have low oil pressure when warm at idle ( just below one) and i think I might have an issue with the oil pressure relief valve.
Do I need to drain the oil to remove the valve and check the spring? Also if it is broken should I replace it with the same part or is there an upgraded/new part number for this spring? Thanks!
-Brad
No need to drain the oil, you will only loose a pint or two.
There is an updated 997 relief valve ( has a chamfer at the top ) , but the spring hasn't been updated and is still the 996 #, but has been known to break or weaken ( shorten )..I would put a new spring in , yours is probably 20 years old and a bit tired.
just get 5 23 and 24.
As above get the 24 in 997 spec.
