Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
I rented one from an Indie, but it was the wrong one so I improvised with a PVC pipe coupler.
Leading evidence: 'wrong one' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'wrong one' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clutch and flywheel' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
You may want to consider replacing the IMS bearing from LN engineering as long as you're in there.
Replace intermediate shaft flange as it has been updated

Suggestion
I would recommend replacing the intermediate shaft flange as it has been updated from a simple o-ring to a nice seal.

But you should replace the rear 4 case half bolts with new ones, all the flywheel bolts (8), the clutch cover bolts (4), if you do the IMS you need to get 3 new bolts for the IMS flange.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My clutch is slipping so i am going to be tearing the car down next week to replace the clutch and flywheel. I was also considering doing the RMS. Does anyone know where I can find a current parts list for this job? I know a lot of the old bolt part numbers have been superceded.... anyone know where to buy a porsche rms tool?
thanks
I would recommend replacing the intermediate shaft flange as it has been updated from a simple o-ring to a nice seal. You may want to consider replacing the IMS bearing from LN engineering as long as you're in there. You're car would have the dual row bearing unless the engine has been replaced. The part numbers are 999 385 004 01 for the 4 crankcase bolts, 900 385 275 01 for the 3 IMS flange bolts, 996 105 017 02 for the IMS flange, and 997 101 212 01 for the RMS. It's not easy to find an aftermarket RMS install tool but I found one about a year ago after doing some google searches and it was about $350. I would check with a local mechanic and see if you could rent one.
The RMS tool can be made. Look for my thread "Going in alone"
I woudl think about doing the AOS too.
Also but the RMS from the dealer. The indys are still selling old stock. So to make sure you get the right RMS buy ti form the dealer.
Have you thougth about doing the IMS bearing too?
Fly wheel is a good Idea. But is more costly than the clutch. I reused mine after cleaning it all up really well.
Good luck... if you are doing it on your back.. You are going to be tired after your are done. I know I was.
how well the flywheel "cleans up" is only part of what makes it good or bad....its also how it responds to rotational force. There is a "test" for it.... I wont quote it but has to due with rotating the upper section while holding the lower section in place and seeing the rate of return back to the normal position.
I just did this job, and did a post here to supplement some of the other write ups like Kyles. Pelican parts has a good procedure too with lots of pictures.
An indie suggested that I take the flywheel to NAPA to have it surfaced. If you look very closely at your flywheel when you remove it, you may see that the clutch disc has worn a shallow depression on the flywheel. Surfacing will make the flywheel even and smooth.
Surprisingly, you can order a RMS tool from the dealer for less than $150. They don't have any in the US right now so it has to come from Germany and it will take a couple of weeks. Or you can make one from plastic pipe couplers for $5. Given how they have a propensity to leak, the dealer option is not a dumb move. I rented one from an Indie, but it was the wrong one so I improvised with a PVC pipe coupler.
It's one of those "as long as you are in there" type jobs; RMS, IMS, AOS, clutch kit too. You can save a few bucks going to a Sachs clutch (OEM) instead of genuine Porsche (made by sachs, same thing), but I have found that dealers who discount like Sunset and Suncoast etc, have the best prices when you have to buy a genuine Porsche part like the AOS, bolts etc. Sunset was running a special when I bought mine a couple of weeks ago.
I also did my IMS bearing because I don't want to worry about it.
But you should replace the rear 4 case half bolts with new ones, all the flywheel bolts (8), the clutch cover bolts (4), if you do the IMS you need to get 3 new bolts for the IMS flange.
It's not a tough job and if you bust your butt it can be done in a weekend.
