Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just replaced my MAF sensor and dropped one of the T20 screws into the engine bay. Anyone have an idea of where I could find a replacement? I'm guessing not the hardware store like most of the nuts and bolts on other cars. I appreciate the help.

POST 2Original post

Bummer. Last time I was at Home Depot I believe they had the tamper-proof (and regular) Torx screws available in the special trays with cotter pins and the like. GL

POST 3Original post

It might be worth digging around with a magnetic pickup tool to see if you can salvage it...

Been too much time since I was last my car's MAF so I do not know about clearance issues but if you have a good hardware store nearby you probably can find a couple of properly sized -- right diameter, thread pitch, suitable length -- allen head metric screws/bolts. Be sure the threads of the screw/bolt do not bottom out and give you a false sense of the screws being tight nor thread in too shallow and with not enough engagement strip out the threads into what the screws thread into. The replacement screws won't have any "security" feature like the factory T20 screws but as long as you don't park your car in a shady part of town with the engine compartment open I don't think anyone will steal your MAF. 'course, if you find suitable replacements you still should order the proper T20 replacement screws. Any Porsche dealer should be able to order these for you if the parts department doesn't have any spares in stock. If you have the other screw you can visit a VW or Audi dealer parts department and the parts counter clerk might be able to find you a suitable match.

I couldn't comment on the thread but I used your instructions and ordered the Bosch part as well, so I'll say Thank You here! It sounded like it landed on the bottom panel but I can't access it from where I'm parked and I figured it would fall out when I drive it. I'll see if I can get my hands on one without moving the car.

Hah, true, I guess I do just need to match the length/width/thread.

I really like the idea of you finding the screw. For one thing you want to know exactly where it ended up. For another thing unless you had the engine open or the intake open the screw is retrievable you just need a bright light and a magnetic on a stick -- automotive tool supply houses carry these if you don't already have one in your tool box -- and patience.
