Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used spray can "automotive trim paint" (black) that was not soft touch to paint these trim pieces.

I have also used the stuff to recoat some of the interior pieces on my Corvette, as the soft-touch plastic stuff craps out over time just like it does on the 996 center console...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been cleaning up the car waxing and detailing and such. Got to the front intake duct trim to the radiators and am not sure if the plastic is supposed to be some shade of silver or black. Mine is not "BLACK" nor is it "SILVER" but rather a messy version of both.
I think that piece started life as either black or very dark grey plastic. On most if not all the 996's I've seen (including mine), it's faded - usually unevenly, to a very light grey color.
Autozone sells black plastic trim paint in a rattle can - it's perfect for recoating once-black plastics that have faded. I have also used the stuff to recoat some of the interior pieces on my Corvette, as the soft-touch plastic stuff craps out over time just like it does on the 996 center console...
It's worth the extra half hour for removing and replacing the front bumper cover. Stuff something - cardboard, newspaper, whatever - into the ducts so you don't wind up getting paint on the heat exchangers.
This is also a great opportunity to clean out the crap between the AC and radiator panels - you wouldn't believe how much crap gets in there and how much hotter your car runs because of the reduced airflow...
Yep. It's supposed to be black, and it fades easily. I painted mine the last time I took off the front bumper to clean the radiators. I used some sort of "bumper black" spray paint.
(You are planning to clean the radiators, right?)
"New dumb owner questions" - what exactly do you mean by that?
1. Owner questions that are dumb (but at least "new") or
2. Owner who has newly become dumb and now has questions ("I can't find the ignition switch, where'd they put it?" "I can't find the engine under the hood, where'd they put it?") or
3. New owner who feels dumb because he joined Rennlist after buying the car and is now scared sh__less ("What the hell, how come the seller didn't tell me about _____ (fill in the blank)?!")
Very Funny KC. If you notice when I joined this place it was years and several P-cars ago.
Thanks on the heads up for Rad cleaning. I have been cleaning a lot so no sense in stopping now. I haven't found but one DAPO issue so far in a weeks worth of ownership.
Other items I am putting on my work list is the carpet behind the rear seats. Pretty sun faded and fragile.
I used spray can "automotive trim paint" (black) that was not soft touch to paint these trim pieces.
The finish that the paint leaves is not smooth. It is rough approximating black rubber trim such as for the rear bumperettes.
You really need to remove your front bumper cover to get to the backside to remove these trim pieces. They pop out fairly easy. You'll see how they are attached.
I was pretty sure mine were originally a silverish gray. I have a C4 and they seemed similar in color to the silver/gray brake calipers that come on a C4.
But, I painted them black anyhow as it seemed more fitting.
This works well also
