If you disconnected things on the TB to remove and clean, don't forget to do a TB calibration - key in ignition, turn to ON (not start), wait 60 seconds and turn key to off.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry if this has been answered before, I did search but I'm only finding threads about noise and codes. Can a noisy SAI pump be indicative of an issue that could cause a cold idle problem? When I first start the car cold the idle will be unusually low and if I touch the gas it will die. It starts right back up and after 60 seconds or so it will let me give it some gas and the idle will come up a bit and then run fine. I have no codes and this behavior just started coincidentally with an huge increase in the noise from the SAI pump. I did read the threads about lubing the bearings in the motor but I'm doubting that a noisy SAI Pump motor bearing would be responsible for the cold start/idle issue even though the two things have seemingly started at the same time. Previously on cold start, the engine would fire, the idle would settle in and then within a second or so there would be a small surge up to about 1500rpm after which it would return to a normal rpm and I'd be on my way. I've always thought this was a bit odd and is maybe indicative that something has been amiss all along ( this is my first 911 and I've only put about 1000 miles on it). I've noticed watching cold start videos on BaT that other 996s do not have this little surge that mine would do. I really appreciate any thoughts. I was going to just go ahead and order a new SAI pump but if there is something else that I should order along with it...... ?? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Mine is throwing codes so I've been looking at this system and studying it. I've had mine out a couple of times before I dig in for the fix. It doesn't seem like the air pump would cause the engine to run rough cold. The purpose of the air pump is blow air into the exhaust manifold to heat up the cats quicker. Emissions stuff. I think it must be something else. IMO.

POST 3Original post

Depending on the year, it could be your Idle Control Valve (ICV). It needs to be cleaned every so often. It is on your throttle body. Search for cleaning ICV. SAI pump does not have anything to do with idle.

I appreciate the sanity check, guys. I didn't think SAI would cause this issue but being pretty green to flat six motors I'm glad to have the Rennlist collective brain to query. I'll take a look at the IAC and go from there. Thanks for the direction Joe.

POST 5Original post

If you do pull your throttle body to check and clean the ICV, one quick tip - lay a towel under the throttle body when removing the bolts. Those bolts love to fall out and you spend a considerable amount of time trying to find them

POST 6Original post

If cleaning the idle control valve doesnt resolve, you may want to perform a smoke test. You may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Vacuum leaks can cause all sorts of idle issues.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just closing the loop on this one. Cleaning the throttle body resolved my cold start idle issue. My car is an 04 so it doesn't have an IAC valve as I understand it but the TB was pretty grungy inside. A quick clean up with some brake cleaner and all is back to normal. Thanks to everyone who responded with helpful suggestions. I really appreciate this community.

POST 8Original post

Next time use Throttle Body cleaner, not brake cleaner. It is better for the aluminum throttle body. And correct, an 04 does not have an ICV. If you disconnected things on the TB to remove and clean, don't forget to do a TB calibration - key in ignition, turn to ON (not start), wait 60 seconds and turn key to off. Then go drive!
