While the engine was out I also replaced the coolant tank and cap.

When I brought the tranny back to the shop to install the drivetrain I told the mechanic to check the diff just in case the tranny shop drained it.

So, if anyone is in there doing a belt, pulley or alternator you might as well replace the oil fill tube.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
My epic journey with the tiptronic rebuild is finally over. I got the car back just a couple of weeks ago after being down since late March. While the engine was sitting in the shop my friend and I added a mystery part. See if you can spot it in the picture.
I must say, with the newly rebuilt transmission (replaced conductor plate, one set of clutch plates, fluid and filter, and of course fixed the leak in the case halves), new motor mounts, new tranny mount, the car runs great! It idles smoother than ever and some of the darty handling at speed is gone. While the engine was out I also replaced the coolant tank and cap.
When I brought the tranny back to the shop to install the drivetrain I told the mechanic to check the diff just in case the tranny shop drained it. Turns out the tranny shop drained it, so the diff was empty. I read a thread here from a while back where someone had the dealer do a transmission service and they forgot to refill the diff. I had that in the back of my mind when I asked the mechanic to check it. Good thing I remembered!
In case you have trouble finding the mystery part, a big shout out to Skip. The engine was out for so long that when it went back in the car we couldn't figure out where to connect one hose. I sent a few e-mails to Skip. He responded within minutes and gave me the solution.
Only issue I had was some dripping antifreeze which turned out that there was some air in the coolant system. Since the battery was connected and disconnected many times I now have an alarm code 47, unable to sync with central lock error. Locking the car with the key FOB works fine, except my central lock light would stay lit and when I unlocked the car it give a double beep. But, everything else is working and there are no codes with the immobizer.
So hats off to Skip and the rest of Rennlist. This forum rocks!
Mystery solved, I imagine
U have an open micro switch causing the fault condition. They r all over trunk, frunk, glove box, arm rest, dash sensor, and doors. A duremetric should read them and let u know whats open.
Sasilverbullet for the win!
De Jeeper, funny you mention that. The rear lid has failed to close properly on a couple of occasions (lock won't catch), including yesterday when I picked up the car. The shop did not have a PIWIS or Durametric so their code s/w could not see the individual locks.
So, anyone in NH or in MA near the border have a Durametric with an open VIN registration handy?
Forgot to mention that all the posts a couple of weeks ago regarding the oil fill tube were spot on. While my engine was on a cart the mechanic slightly pulled on the oil fill tube and it broke. It was extremely brittle. Glad we caught that before the car was done. So, if anyone is in there doing a belt, pulley or alternator you might as well replace the oil fill tube. At least for the 996.2 the alternator is in the way of the oil fill tube mounting bolts.
