Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I'm looking at purchasing a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo and am trying to figure out what to expect as far as price, maintenance, performance, etc goes. The '01 I'm looking at has about 52,000 miles and is in good shape but has been modded. Seller claims upgraded K16 turbos, 996 injectors, a catless factory exhaust, and an accessport. He also claims 508whp. My main questions are: What do I need to watch out for maintenance-wise on these things? What's a good price? This one is listed for 36k. It also has a a bodykit with wing, lip, and spoiler, lowering springs, and GT2 wheels. Does 508whp seem like a realistic/safe number for daily driving? I'm not sure what boost is set at. I'm looking for a weekend warrior/occasional track car. Any input would be appreciated!

Have you peeked over at the "996 Turbo" forum? This isn't it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, second time in a row I've showed my ignorance. Thanks

POST 4Original post

Sounds like a great car. Biggest thing to look out for is 2nd gear pop out. Otherwise the turbo is a stout car.

POST 5Original post

Wow. Lookin for a similar deal deal here but will be about $50K. Amazing deal at 36!

POST 6Original post

If you think it guess what, someone else probably asked it already. Exhaust the search option and then you will be able to ask a more directed question.

POST 7Original post

As far as what to expect... I think you can expect SPEED! Enjoy the new ride!

POST 8Original post

508 WHP would be north of 600 HP at the cranks, the question would be long term reliability and if the car has been "beat up" by the previous owner, especially when the price seems a little too good. As well, any CEL? If you are driving on the street, is emission testing w/o the cats going to be an issue in your local area?

You're going to find that when you start talking about track use for the 996 turbo or GT3, then the topic of coolant pipes will come up. If you do some searching you will find many threads about it (basically the coolant pipes are just glued in so if you run the heck out of the car at the track, they can come loose & spray down your engine & the track in a coolant bath. That said, depends on what you are doing with the car & if you aren't tracking it that much, perhaps wait until you need an engine out service then pin or weld the pipes at that time. Maintenance wise, not a heck of a lot to be honest. Nothing special at least that I can think of. Get a PPI for sure before pulling the trigger on it and check for stage 1 & 2 over-revs. That will help to tell you how hard the car was pushed by the prior owner. As far as it being modded & driving it daily; I'd say that all depends on how you drive it & how hard you push it. Let's face it, if you beat on a car all the time, things will wear out quicker. But that's true with any car. For reference, I have an 02 Turbo with 598whp and I love that car every time I drive it.

POST 11Original post

I would be very cautious about a modified 2001. Sounds like a nightmare if something goes wrong.
