Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This may be my second helpful post. Or it may be my first. Or this may not be helpful, but I was dealing with annoying ignition lock issues since I got the car. My specific issue is that when the car was below freezing they key would be a little tough to turn, but if I stopped the car before the car got warm, I would turn the key off, remove they key, the engine stopped but the electronics stayed on for a second to several minutes until I heard a fairly loud click. So there are 3 parts to the original ignition and 2 on the new model. 1 (2) - the steering lock with the electrical connector on the back. On the original the the black electrical connector can be replaced. Circled in the pic. In the updated part you can not take this off. 3 - lock cyliner mechanism - it goes in here - sorry no pic of the piece - its back on the car and I only have pics of the original So my first attempt was to replace just the electrical connector in the back. No joy. The winter still had the same problem. I have read may people saying this fixed their weird electrical problem they had, but I was not have any electrical problems. Just a long delay when turning the car off when cold. So did more research and read thousands of post on lubrication for the lock mechanism. Some people said yes and some said it could make it worse. Now here is my helpful tip. No amount of lubrication will help in a 996. You will only be able to get is in the cylinder, not into the ignition lock. At all. So here was my problem. When you pull the key out the last loud click you hear is this thing popping out and going into the steering column. No amount of lubrication will help. When comparing my new to old one, the old one had a weaker "pop". I suspect the springs or whatever magical gremlins are inside just wear over time. So if you are having ignition related issues 1-replace the electrical connector 2-if that does not work replace the entire ignition lock skip the lube

POST 2Original post

3-Move to Arizona. Eliminates the 'below freezing' problem. 4-Avoid Flagstaff, where this option may not work. Thanks, BTW for this explanation. Had vaguely similar experiences with my prior 996 back in Illinois. ...still prefer my solution, however. Nothing personal.

POST 3Original post

Stoked that my issues thus far have been the switch, and not the mechanism...
