Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've never once had a smog guy check a cat to see if it was C.A.R.B.

After repair we seemed to be on some kind of CA list because had to get a special smog inspection every year not every two years.

Did you arrive at the test station after running the car long enough to get the engine hot & have top tier premium fuel in it?

FWIW, my last test on the 996 and yes, it makes a huge difference having the cat nice and hot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm currently looking at purchasing an out of state 996 that has a Fabspeed Stainless Steel Exhaust that was put on the car in 2009 and I was wondering if anyone has experience with this exhaust or any aftermarket exhaust complying with CA emissions. I've looked around and keep seeing different answers. Does it solely rely on the cats? Does it have to have some special sticker?
Not Legal unless you somehow got stock cats onto the x-pipe. How do I know? I spent 2 hours yesterday changing back to stock after failing the CA smog test. Cats MUST have CARB certification, which *NO* 200 cell cat has.
I *knew* it would fail, but I thought I would try to see if the emissions would pass....which they very much came close to; a touch out of range on unburnt hydrocarbons on the 15mph but well below max allowable at the 25mph test. CO and and NO all on low end of allowable range.

In my experience test stations sometimes will "help you pass" mostly in poorer areas.
Yes, went out and heat soaked the engine up and down the local hills for 45 min. For both tests.
Nothing but premium Shell V-Pro or Cheveron Techtron ever goes in the tank.
Not really anywhere like that in the Bay Area...they're all pretty stringent on visual and the emissions just can't be fudged with the computer talking to the state system
You can see HUGE differences in all emissions between the Fabspeed 200 cel cats and the factory cats.
I've never once had a smog guy check a cat to see if it was C.A.R.B. compliant but it's probably just a matter of time.
Here's a link to C.A.R.B. approved aftermarket cats for 1999 cars.

The number the smog guy is looking for is the one that begins with the 'D'. This is an aftermarket Magnaflow for my '88 M5 and you can see the 'D-193-86' on it which shows that it's approved.
FWIW, my last test on the 996 and yes, it makes a huge difference having the cat nice and hot.
From fab speed web site on their sport cats.
Includes integrated 200-cell HJS Sport Catalytic Converters for maximum flow, efficiency, all while being able to pass tail pipe emissions tests (will not pass C.A.R.B visual inspection)
Blakee, is that your system that listed on the Sacramento Craigslist ? Seem if it is you, I am couple block from you.

Our Jag XJ failed CA smog because vehicle computer didn't have an OBD output. After repair we seemed to be on some kind of CA list because had to get a special smog inspection every year not every two years. Jag was beautiful and faithfully upheld its reputation for never ending expensive repairs.
