Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use zf transmissions' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check temperature at the transmission pan' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You will need an infra red thermometer to check the temperature at the transmission pan.

Thirdly, to get the correct amount of fluid you have to have the car running while filling so the the fluid gets to a certain temp range.

Secondly, the correct procedure involves filling the transmission by using a pump to force the new fluid up through a plug on the bottom of the transmission.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

how easy is it to change transmission fluid. on a 996 .could I manage it from home. I don't know when it was done last . I'm experiencing a rough gear change coming down the gears from 3rd tob2nd & 1st . my car is tiptronic auto.. 5 speed. any info would be appreciated 🙏
A Google search will bring up a few good videos on the procedure. Unfortunately for us, Porsche over complicated the steps. First, you MUST get the correct fluid for your model year. Don't use anything other than what the required fluid is. Secondly, the correct procedure involves filling the transmission by using a pump to force the new fluid up through a plug on the bottom of the transmission. Thirdly, to get the correct amount of fluid you have to have the car running while filling so the the fluid gets to a certain temp range. You will need an infra red thermometer to check the temperature at the transmission pan. When the fuild is at the right temp and starts running out of the top plug it is filled to the correct level. If you fill it cold it will over-fill and potentially damage something (leak out of a seal or between the transmission cases, etc).
If you decide to tackle the job also replace the diff oil.
You didn't mention the year of your car. The early 996 used ZF transmissions. From 2002 on they have Mercedes 722.6 transmissions, but with a Porsche designed case. There may be differences in which fluid to use.
Joel is correct.
check if its a 996.1 or 2 gen.
then there are packs that include the oil, a filter and the sealant. (price vary between 200 to 400euros)
filling it up will require some out of the box thinking...
all in all, ive done it many times and its easy to do.
Keep in mind that if you do it this way, only 3-5 litres of oil will be changed... the rest will still be the same old oil and will mix with the new oil you add.
a true oil change is with a specific machine that will change the whole oil. if you find a good garage near you that has the said machine, he should charge you about 600euros max... it would be worth thinking about it)
i dont do it with the machine as i change the oil often...
if you do it send pics here to show the world how easy it is
